My favorite third Season episode of The Smurfs
ja_kitty_7112 May 2010
This is my favorite third-season episode of The Smurfs, but first, I'd like to tell you about Marina. I first saw her in her third appearance in the sixth season episode "No Smurf Is An Island." At first, I didn't know that Handy has a mermaid sweetheart, and I'd wondered how they met-until I watched this episode online.

The story starts at the smurfs' river bridge. Handy was showing the other smurfs the blueprints for a "smurf-size" diving suit when, "BOOM!" a large catfish smashed into the bridge's supports and ate Handy's blueprints. Meanwhile, deep beneath the sea, the Mer-King Aquarius (voiced by Don Messick) was mysteriously afflicted. Marina, his daughter, suggested she give some "lily root" from the magical Pool of Avalon. Of course, Aquarius did not want her to go because, besides the pool being far away up the River Smurf, there is the mean "custodian" who guards the pool. But Marina loved her father and insisted on going. Meanwhile, the Smurfs were ready for their practice dive in the diving suit. Clumsy and Brainy worked the air pump while Smurfette sounded out the rhythm ("Down and Up, Down and Up"), and Papa Smurf remained on the line. Meanwhile, Marina (on her quest) attempted to jump up the River Smurf's waterfalls but instead drifted downstream unconscious, straight toward the river bridge. Then Handy sees her, rescues her, and then revives her in a special tank he made called a "Smurferator" that kept her oxygenated. Marina relates her plight to Handy, Smurfette, and Papa, and so the Smurfs decided to help her by dividing into two teams: Handy, Dreamy (with his ship), Hefty, Clumsy, and Brainy, to bring Aquarius to the village. And Smurfette, Lazy, and Grouchy were to go to the Pool of Avalon to find lily roots for the medicine. I won't give you anymore details; you'll have to watch and see.

I love the part when Papa Smurf bangs on Handy's diving helmet to get his attention, and a shaky Handy says, "Pa-pa Smurf, don't do that!" And I love Handy and Marina; they're one of my favorite TV pairings.
