In the mid-2000s, one of the main selling points in mainstream horror was the so-called Torture Porn scene. Emphasizing extreme violence, brutality, and relentless torture and suffering from its victims at the expense of traditional suspense and chills, the scene had a massive amount of mainstream appeal thanks to films like “Saw,” “Hostel,” “Wolf Creek,” and “The Collector” among others bringing about massive financial gain and audience acceptance which brought about numerous attempts throughout the world. After the Japanese effort “Grotesque” started the Asian countries jumping on the trend, Taiwanese director Kevin Ko tackled the genre with his debut feature “Invitation Only” which is now available on physical media from Unearthed Films.

Jue ming pai dui (Invitation Only)
Screenplay by Sung In & Carolyn Lin
Directed by Kevin Ko
Taiwan, 2009
One of the calling cards of the horror genre is its ability to delve deep into societal issues. The horror genre can often go to places that other genres cannot because of the content found within a horror movie. Not all horror movies explore society, but there are plenty that do so in fine fashion. Jue ming pai dui wants to be one of the films that does explore society more deeply. This film wants to be one of those types of movies so bad that it runs rough shod over subtlety in its desire to deliver a profound message connected with present day society.
The rich and the poor, or upper and lower class if you will, being at odds is nothing new to the world. Travel to any country and a...

A public service will be held on Thursday for crime figure and author who once claimed he was involved in 19 killings
The crime figure turned author Mark "Chopper" Read has been laid to rest at a small family burial in Melbourne.
The invitation-only funeral for Read, who died last week of liver cancer aged 58, was held at Fawkner, said Nigel Davies, of the funeral director Lonergan and Raven.
"Today we did a very small, private burial. Invitation only. There were only a few family members in attendance," Davies said.
A public service will be held on Thursday at Clifton Hill.
"He has always said that he didn't mind who got up and said what at his funeral," Davies said.
Read spent more than 23 years in jail for crimes including armed robbery, assault and kidnapping, including trying to abduct at gunpoint a Victorian county court judge.

Cmt has announced the pickup of four new unscripted series: Top Secret Recipe featuring chef Todd Wilbur, and Trick My What? with John Schneider, both of which will premiere Oct. 7, and Bayou Billionaires and Summer Rental, which will launch in winter. In addition to Fridays, where Top Secret Recipe and Trick My What? will air, Cmt will open a second night of original programming in the fall on Thursday with the returning Sweet Home Alabama and Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, which will debut new seasons Oct. 20. Cmt’s upcoming slate also includes the November premiere of Cmt’s second original movie, Reel Love, starring LeAnn Rimes and Burt Reynolds, and new episodes of music series Cmt Crossroads and Invitation Only. After flirting with scripted comedies last year by ordering four pilots — one of which, Working Class, went to series — Cmt focused on growing its unscripted slate under former NBC reality executive...

Last year, Carrie Underwood showed Taylor Swift just who the real queen of country music was with her two big wins at the Cmt Music Awards. The one-time "American Idol" champ prevailed in another public vote as her video for "Cowboy Casanova" took the top award while her rendition of "Temporary Home" on the Cmt show "Invitation Only" won the performance prize. Taylor Swift had gone into the night with three nominations, including bids for video of the year and female video for "You Belong to Me." The teen singing sensation had claimed those prizes in both 2008 for "Our Song and 2009 for "Love Story." In 2006, Underwood had won both video of the year and female video for "Before He Cheats." Invitation Only
Stars: Maria Ozawa, Byrant Chang, Julianne Chu | Written by Sung In, Carolyn Lin | Directed by Kevin Ko
Five young strangers are unexpectedly invited to an extravagant and exclusive party at which they have the times of their lives, mingling with the rich and the beautiful. That is until they find the brutally decapitated body of one of their group and begin to figure out the true theme of the evening. The remaining four become the prey of a vicious and relentless killer for the entertainment of their sadistic hosts. As the night progresses, the only ambition they have left is to get out alive.
Heralded as Taiwan’s first ever slasher movie, Invitation Only has more in common with the so-called “torture porn” antics of Hostel than the classic slasher movie genre. The film takes all the cliches from years of American horror cinema and blends them together...

'Stick to what you know' is theoretically sound advice that's launched many a promising career, but it's just as often led to aspiring writer/directors crowbarring the familiar in where it doesn't belong. Cheng Yu-Chieh's 2005 debut Do Over expended far too much effort working a mish-mash of garbled sub-plots and disparate visual styles around the central story of a director shooting a film he didn't believe in, and while the production values were fantastic the result was a pretentious mess that failed to make any lasting impact.
For his second feature, Yang Yang, Cheng brings back his most promising cast member - French-Taiwanese actress Sandrine Pinna, impressive in last year's winningly sweet little drama Miao Miao. The plot centres around Yang Yang, a Eurasian girl (like Pinna, half-French) struggling to balance her responsibilities to her new step-family with her inner conflict over her mixed parentage.

Director: Kevin Ko. Review: Adam Wing. Invitation Only is Taiwan’s first stab at the slasher genre, so the question you have to ask yourself is, will they follow western tradition and deliver a formulaic horror movie with pissed off psychopaths and shimmering blades aplenty, or will they turn the slasher movie genre on its head, serving up something fresh and exciting? The answer is relatively simple, blood, guts and sex. Guess we’ll be sticking with tried and tested for the duration of the movie then. Kevin Ko heads into Hostel-like territory here, presenting us with extreme violence, inventive torture, and gratuitous nudity.

Hailed as Taiwan's first ever slasher horror movie, Invitation Only is due out on English subtitled (Hk R3) DVD next week. Director Kevin Ko does a good job of ticking off the sex, blood and gore staple requirements of a splatter fest, with some gratuitous nudity thrown in for good measure. Bryant Chang and TV star Jerry Huang lead the cast, whilst "Adult" movie siren Maria Ozawa shows of her assets (and of course acting skills!) for all she’s worth. Invitation Only is released on September 10th.

Taiwanese slasher film Invitation Only - the first ever slasher produced in that country - has received a bit of notice in the pages in the past thanks to the stellar promo for it I saw way back in March and the excellent poster art, but while there has been good progress made behind the scenes - Filmax recently picked the film up for international sales - the producers have largely been content to stay in the background for now, keeping promo materials very scarce. But not any more.
