When one first sees or hears of the eponymous character's name, the first thing that one may have in mind is this show has a military theme (though her surname has no second a in it). But it's not exactly that. Sally Sargent lives a double life as a senior high student and a secret agent. After coming across and reading about it online, it would take me a while before watching it on Youtube. Well, I finally did just that a couple late nights/early mornings ago and this is another one I enjoyed. In fact, this has been added to my favorite T.V./cartoon pilots list. Yet again, another great one that fell through the cracks haplessly. Since CBS never picked it up and it wasn't expanded into a series, why couldn't/didn't some other channel/network add this to its scheduled lineup instead, at least?
Anyway, the first (and only) mission we see for Sally is that she has to leave her school's gym in the middle of cheerleading practice to rescue a schoolmate who was kidnapped(Sally was really the one who was supposed to be kidnapped, but due to a mix-up of the girls' names in the newspaper, the other girl ended up getting kidnapped instead), under the orders of this T.V. pilot's villain, Rico Stark. Then, Sally's father is held hostage and she has to rescue him as well. How will Sally set them free from Rico's clutches and will she be able able to do so successfully?
One may mistake this for a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, but it's actually a Terrytoons production. However, I read a comment on a site blog's article on this mentioning that the art style of this is a combination of the two studios' art styles. Like several, other T.V. animations of the time, it's limited, but not as much as Filmation's output. The coloration is appropriate, as are the backgrounds and layouts. The music is fine, especially with the theme song being perfect. The voice acting is well-done, most notably the titular character, among the lesser characters voiced by the late Janet Waldo. The story and screenplay are written well enough.
Sally makes for a truly positive role model. She and this T.V. pilot were among those that definitely had the potential going for it and deserved so much more, which it should've gotten instead of being pushed to the side unjustly. As always, dern whose ever idea it was not to give it the green light to continue. Having arrived at a time when girls and women were gradually moving away from or shedding sexist/chauvinist stereotypes, she's a shining paradox that there are heroines who are capable of so much more and shouldn't be underestimated. Running at less than ten minutes, it should've last for 22 minutes instead. The reviewer before me made a reference to Kim Possible. But of the two, Sally is better than Kim. I consider that to be so, because on a critique of disliked characters I read on another site, the commentator's beef with Kim is that she's too perfect in that she always wins too easily against the villains, whereas Sally has a flaw in that when she attempts to save and release the two hostages, she's hindered at first, before trying again. As one of the very last Terrytoons, I can safely say that at least one, if not both of them, ended the run of productions with a bang and strongly. I can also say for sure that it's one of the best of the decade. Recommended.
