The title is a quote from William Blake's poem, The Tyger, which begins "Tiger, tiger burning bright..."
Kelly Taylor (Briana Evigan) hopes to take advantage of the college scholarship she has been awarded but first must make arrangements for institutionalizing her younger, autistic brother Tom (Charlie Tahan) while she's away. Unfortunately, stepfather Johnny Gaveneau (Garret Dillahunt) has just emptied Kelly's savings account and used the money to purchase a Bengal tiger for a "safari ranch" he is planning to open. At the same time, Hurricane Isabel is moving up the Gulf Coast, so Johnny has boarded up the doors and windows to protect the house. When the hurricane hits, Johnny weathers it in a local bar, while Kelly and Tom find themselves trapped in the house with the starving tiger.
Burning Bright is based on a screenplay co-written by Christine Coyle Johnson, Julie Prendiville Roux, and David Higgins. However, the title is taken from an 18th century poem, "The Tyger", by English poet William Blake [1757-1827].
He was put there by an unknown person, who opened the outside door, dragged the tiger's cage up to it, opened the cage, and released the tiger into the house.
The only clues given in the movie are that the story takes place in "Montgomery County" somewhere near the Gulf Coast. There are Montgomery Counties in Texas, Georgia, and Arkansas. However, the movie was actually filmed in Florida.
Three real tigers (named in the credits as Katie, Schicka, and Kismet) were used in the filming. However, for safety reasons, the tigers did not share the same time and space with the actors. Instead, they used such techniques as green screen and composite shots to create the illusion that the tiger was in the same scenes as the actors. In the DVD commentary, director Carlos Brooks says that the only CGI used (for the tiger) was for the saliva dripping from its mouth.
As Kelly and Tom crawl out of the freezer, Johnny returns home and begins removing the nails from the board covering the front door. Slowly, he creeps into the house with his rifle ready to shoot at the tiger, which he knows must still be loose in the house. He is surprised when he sees Kelly and Tom appear in the hallway. He tries to make small talk as Kelly and Tom silently inch their way closer to the front door. "Tom doesn't understand what happened here," Kelly finally says. "He can't tell anyone. So, you gonna let us go?" Johnny replies that she's not the only one wanting out, that Catherine (Mary Rachel Quinn) was going to leave him, and Kelly realizes for the first time that her mother didn't commit suicide...Johnny killed her. Suddenly, the tiger leaps out of nowhere and attacks Johnny, knocking him to the floor. As the tiger drags Johnny off to eat, Kelly and Tom slowly back out onto the porch and close the door. In the final scene, Tom reaches out to Kelly and holds her hand.
Yes. "The Tyger" is in the public domain and can be read and/or downloaded from numerous sites, such as here or here.
Yes. There is a note reading: Tigers are a critically endangered species. The worldwide tiger population has decreased from over 100,000 in the early 1900s to less than 8,000 today. It is estimated that there are fewer tigers alive in the wild than living in captivity in the United States alone.
Strangely enough the German DVD features a version that runs nearly 3 minutes longer than the one featured on the British DVD. There are two extended scenes in the German version and the order of scenes was altered as well.
