Quotes

  • C. Carwood Lipton : [Voiceover, during Speirs' rush across enemy lines in Foy]  At first the Germans didn't shoot at him. I think they couldn't quite believe what they were seeing. But that wasn't the really astounding thing. The astounding thing was, after he hooked up with I Company, he came back.

  • Capt. Ronald Speirs : Well, go ahead and ask me.

    C. Carwood Lipton : Ask you what, sir?

Capt. Ronald Speirs : The stories about me. You want to know if they're true, right? You know the funny thing about stories like that? Everyone always says they heard it from someone who was there. Then if you ask that person, they say *they* heard it from someone who was there, and so on. I bet if you went back 2,000 years, you'd find a bunch of centurions standing around talking about how Tertius lopped the heads off of some Carthaginian prisoners.

    C. Carwood Lipton : Well, sir, maybe they kept talking about it because they never heard Tertius deny it.

Capt. Ronald Speirs : Well, maybe that's because Tertius knew there was some value to the men thinking he was the meanest, toughest son of a bitch in the whole Roman legion.

  • [Winters finds Lipton waiting for him outside the C.P., smoking a cigarette]

Richard D. Winters : Lip. Didn't figure you for a smoking man.

    C. Carwood Lipton : Neither did I.

[Winters hands a dispatch to a waiting runner]

Richard D. Winters : D Company, Lieutenant Speirs. Patrol order.

    [to Lipton]

    Richard D. Winters : So?

    C. Carwood Lipton : We've been watching Foy all day, sir. Not much activity.

    Richard D. Winters : Want a coffee?

    C. Carwood Lipton : No, thank you, sir.

    Richard D. Winters : How's Easy's status?

    C. Carwood Lipton : The men are good, sir. They're prepared. I'm gonna be leading Second Platoon tomorrow. They're probably the weakest after losing Toye and Guarnere and Muck and Penkala. But all in all, I have every confidence in the men, sir.

    Richard D. Winters : Good.

[Lipton looks down and steels himself before continuing]

    C. Carwood Lipton : But on the other hand, I have no confidence in our C.O., sir. Lieutenant Dike is an empty uniform, Captain. He's just... he's not there, sir.

Richard D. Winters : Well, he's gonna be there tomorrow.

    C. Carwood Lipton : Yes, sir, I understand he will be there physically. But tomorrow's gonna be the real deal, and he's gonna have to lead those men. And he's gonna have to make decisions, sir, and I... I gotta tell you, sir, I think he's gonna get a lot of Easy Company men killed.

[Winters looks at him for a long moment]

Richard D. Winters : Thank you, Sergeant, that'll be all.

    C. Carwood Lipton : [resignedly]  Yes, sir.

  • [a German shell lands in the foxhole where Lipton and Luz are taking shelter, but doesn't explode. They stare at it for a moment; Luz pulls out a cigarette and lights it, but Lipton takes it out of his mouth and begins smoking it]

George Luz : Thought you didn't smoke.

    C. Carwood Lipton : I don't.

    George Luz : Uh-huh.

[Luz lights another cigarette, and they go back to staring at the shell]

  • George Luz : [after a mortar landed in Muck and Penkala's foxhole and killed them, Lipton has pulled Luz into his own hole]  Muck and Penkala!

    C. Carwood Lipton : [Trying to be heard over all the noise]  What?

George Luz : Muck and Penkala got hit!
