Great tribute to people who went through so much
snoozejonc25 February 2022
David Webster rejoins Easy Company in the town of Haguenau.

This is another very strong episode that focuses on a specific mission and also pays tribute to what Easy Company went through in the context of the whole war until that point.

There are a number of poignant reflections on the volume of combat situations certain soldiers had been involved in since the D-Day, plus the loss of life and general suffering. This is put in context by the war reaching its final stages, references to normalcy returning to life back home, and the dread of more loss of life after surviving so much.

Additionally the narrative around the patrol sent to capture German soldiers is fascinating and probably worth the story time alone. One decision Major Winters makes at the end of the episode is so heartwarming it almost puts butterflies in your stomach. Credit is due to any leader who does something like that for his men and it is fantastically placed in the story.

The toll the campaign had taken on the remaining soldiers is very much in focus as we see it all from the perspective of a replacement soldier who is not welcomed back with open arms. By all accounts these dynamics existed, so it is important that it is captured on screen.

How much of the dialogue and banter is for dramatic licence is interesting to consider. Roy Cobb is portrayed as constantly hostile, which is fine if this is an accurate reflection of the real person, but if not I think it is unnecessary. Also interesting is the situation where a stranded, injured German soldier is ignored by Cobb, when in reality he was actually put out of his misery by a grenade.

All performances are great and the production values are of the highest standard. Whether or not the combat sequences feel authentic can only be judged by those who were there, so it's not for me to comment on.

The beginning of the end

Warning: Spoilers
This review contains spoilers for the eighth episode of Band of Brothers entitled "The Last Patrol."

The eighth episode of Band of Brothers takes place after the end of The Battle of the Bulge. Easy Company is weary after The Battle of the Bulge. David Webster reintegrates into Easy Company to carry out a mission. David Webster was wounded from Operation Market Garden and missed out on the envelopment of the 101st Airborne at Bastogne.

This episode is one of the more quieter episodes as the focus character of David Webster is different from other enlisted men. David Webster could have been an officer but chose to be a private. He also refused any promotions and chose to remain a private throughout the war. This already gives a different feel to the episode as David Webster is more of an observer. He is also treated as such as he did not participate in The Battle of the Bulge as the other parts of his company did.

I enjoyed this episode a lot for its different tone. At this point in the war, victory for the Allies was certain as Germany had been depleted. The series begins to transition into the epilogue of the war as both Easy Company and the audience is weary of seeing fallen comrades.

I would recommend "The Last Patrol." This is the start of the epilogue to Band of Brothers.

Heartbreaking!

This episode really touched my heart when the soldiers went on the patrol and returned with one injured soldier. His screams of the injury that was caused by a small mistake is so painful.

A solid installment for the series.

Warning: Spoilers
The Last Patrol is a solid installment of the Band of Brother series. Easy Company is at a stalemate with what is left of the German army as the beginning of the end for the war wines down. The U S army is creating political busy work of having snatch patrol for Germany troops for army intelligence. A useless mission, for political reasons, were a new officer and inexperience soldier go on a mistake made mission with bad results. The Last Patrol shows true leadership when Winters lies in order to save his men from the B S from the brass. Well written, acted and directed The Last Patrol tells it like it is episode. Worth watching. 8 stars.

9.4/10, Amazing

This was definitely an amazing episode. I have not seen an episode so far that was a 9.1 or lower for me personally. My favorite character in this episode was Webster. My favorite things about this episode were the storyline, the action, and the ending. I have yet to watch the finale. I am watching this whole series with my mom, and we just watched this episode and the next one. I honestly think this episode should be way higher rated, because this was a great episode. Again, this series is definitely a must-watch, because it's short and amazing at the same exact time. Definitely watch it if you ran out of things to watch.

the big finale is about to come

Good as previous episodes.. thoughts and feelings seem to get even more and more room in the past few episodes (which is understandable.. the war must already be extremely exhausting).. A grand finale can be smelled in the air...

Emblematic.

Warning: Spoilers
The series began in some clarity. We know what the goal was -- getting through jump school even in the face of relative incompetence -- and we could tell one soldier from another because we could see their faces.

But as episode followed episode, though we could follow the general progress of Easy Company through the battles of the European theater, the stories got murkier. In full combat kit, especially bundled up in winter gear, it was more difficult to tell who was who. Some members of the company dropped out, sometimes to appear irregularly in later episodes. Some episodes introduced a completely unfamiliar character and kept him as the central figure in a story that could have stood on its own.

But "The Last Patrol" is emblematic. It represents the series at its best. Winters is back as a captain. The men are dog tired but carry out a dangerous mission successfully, at some cost to themselves. The fire fights are done convincingly. The ending brings a sigh of relief, even though a character we've come to respect is committing a crime to achieve it.

If you were to see only two episodes, the first one and "The Last Patrol" would be a good choice.
