why did she stay in such a dump

Warning: Spoilers
Peta Shelley turns up at a rather grotty boarding house in W2 with a formidable dragon of a landlady. She pays her money and behaves herself.however she does appear and reappear at odd times. This upsets her other guests and eventually the landlady orders Shelley to leave. It turns out that she is a film actress.A year later Shelley is a big star and the landlady is boasting to new boarders of her onetime boarder. This is the sort of film that a couple of years later would come out as "Careless talk costs lives" propaganda.Shelley undresses down to a patterned slip, then goes to bed in a plain slip and wakes up in the patterned slip.Quite fun at 24 minutes.

a new lodger at a lodging house causes consternation by her irregular comings and goings
viccox-132-10725012 August 2013
Elderly long-term residents at the lodging house run by Mrs Cooper, who tries to rule with an iron fist, are happy to stay until a newcomer who is very free with her money leaves and returns at odd hours while never breaking the NO MEN rule. With several minor continuity errors, and late responses to cues, this early Boulting film maintains tension, and audiences can empathise even now with one or two characters portrayed. The plot line develops but is resolved close to the end. Peta Shelley plays it cool, and seems out of place until the reveal at the end of the film. Well worth a look if you get the chance, but don't expect too much.
