Lord Peter arranges a search of the area to look for a very specific no flake white paint, when it isn't found Wimsey deduces that the crime was committed by one of six artists, who subsequently painted the painting in Campbell's style.
It's that scenario that gives us the book's title, five of the artists are innocent, the five red herrings.
It's a fine mystery, we've had the crime, now we get to see Lord Peter begin to unlock the alibis of the artists, albeit with a little help.
I love the characters, many of them are good and charismatic, the eccentric Miss Selby and Miss Cochrane are great fun.
Engrossing, 8/10.
