Muhammad Ali was a childhood hero of mine. I can still remember the night of September 15, 1978 when I watched him beat his former conqueror Leon Spinks to become the first man to win the heavyweight title three times.. Ali fough the best and beat the best from Sonny Liston to George Foreman to Joe Frazier. However, Ken Norton also deserves to be on his list of worthy opponents. Norton gave Ali three tough battles winning one and almost winning the other two as well. He had a confusing style that was just hard for Ali to figure out. I watched their third match at Yankee Stadium and in truth it was a boring fight. However, Norton blew his chance at boxing glory by listening to his corners bad advice. Before the last round they told him to take it easy that he had the fight in the bag where Ali's corner told him to go out and take the last round big to win the fight. It turned out that before the last round the judges had the fight a tie. Norton would have been champ if he had gone out and fought for three minutes but he threw it away.
