Not nearly as effective as the original
So the original The Strangers wasn't flawless by any means. The writing in the film was sometimes questionable, the leads' decisions sometimes idiotic. Yet the reason it still remained as successful and as effective was because of the incredible tension and atmosphere it conjured up. In my opinion, few horror films this century have been able to conjure up the terrifying dread that the original created. It was an incredibly well-directed film. This? Not so much. It's not able to muster one quarter of the tension the original did. In addition to that is the weak screenplay. Even though some of the writing of the original was flawed, the way it wrote its villains made them out to be truly terrifying psychopaths. So much of the reason this film doesn't work, in addition to the directing not being nearly as well crafted as the original, is that the way the film writes its villains just makes them come across really uninspired, boring, and stupid.
This film isn't terrible. It's passable as far as mainstream horrors go. However, it becomes quite dull by about the midway point. While the original got repetitive in its third act, it had an absolutely effective climax. This can't provide much entertainment even after its first kill (which was actually surprising).
