Them's the brakes!

Warning: Spoilers
George's peaceful morning nap is rudely interrupted when Mr. Spacely calls him up to say he'll be over in five minutes. George is to drive him to the spaceport. So after throwing George in a cold shower, he's no worse for the wear, but jumps wide awake when Spacely shows up. While he's away, he's entrusting George with his new car; Judy and Elroy head off to the county fair, driving George's car. Jane didn't seem to mind. So when heading off to return some silverware and go shopping, Jane sees no reason why she couldn't take Mr. Spacely's car. At first, it handles like a dream. It has an onboard computer which offers little to no help at all. Suddenly Jane finds herself speeding, but with no way of slowing down. The brakes don't seem to function. Her dream ride quickly becomes a nightmare as she crashes into the mall, leaving a trail of car parts as she bounces towards the Kiddieland arcade and finally stops on the merry-go-round.

She returns home after dumping the wreck at the mechanics, and is greeted by a well-rested George now ready to make the most of his day off. Why not take Spacely's car and go on an old fashioned picnic? Jane drops the bombshell about the car being a total wreck and so they head down to the garage, driving Judy's jalopy, complete with a huge 'I (heart) Jet Screamer' sign on the side. Well, the car wasn't TOO bad. Sure every single, solitary piece was damaged, a salad fork was stuck in the ignition (don't ask), however it could be fixed. George just hoped it would be done before Mr. Spacely got back. Fate is one cruel SOB for they receive a call from Rosie at the house, saying Mr. Spacely decided not to take a vacation and is coming home. Jane tells Rosie to stall him from coming to get his car, so she tells him it was stolen. The ploy works until Spacely calls the police and they trace the stolen car to the garage and accuse George and Jane of being the crooks. Not only that, but they find Jane's silverware in the back and accuse her of stealing that too. Spacely and his lawyer get to the police station to ID the thugs and at first is relieved to find out they had accidentally fingered the Jetsons. That's also when he finds out his car was completely totaled so it looks as though George is fired again, right? Nope. He's not getting off that easily. Spacely makes him sign a work contract. Half pay, no vacations, unpaid overtime, serve Mr. Spacely and light his cigars... so as George sets about his humiliating new duties, Jane can't help feel but this is in some small way her fault. She also laments that despite her nagging Judy about her driving, that she's the one who goes and has an accident. Um, Jane, you're not helping. But all is not lost. The mechanic comes in to inform Spacely that his brakes were shot even before the accident, so Jane wasn't at fault. Spacely's lawyer suggests George sue him, but the plucky Jetson has a better idea. He turns the tables on Spacely and makes HIM serve he and Jane. So all was well, and Jane is overjoyed that since she was not at fault, she could nag Judy all she wanted.

One of my favorite episodes. The title "S.M.A.S.H" may be misleading, since it doesn't stand for anything. I'm guessing it's an allusion to the TV show "M*A*S*H", which this episode has nothing in common with...although there are some really bad food jokes at the beginning.
