I don’t think anyone’s hired Kyle Baker to write screenplays for romantic comedies yet. But, from the evidence of books like Why I Hate Saturn and I Die at Midnight and this book, I think he’d be really good at it: he has a knack for screwball complications and the kind of dialogue that only tangles up a complicated situation more, no matter how much his characters try to be clear.
You Are Here is a romantic comedy with thriller elements, or maybe a comedy-thriller with romantic elements, published as an album-format graphic novel in 1999. It’s in what I think of as Baker’s “cinematic” style, with mostly wide panels over captions and dialogue and sound effects, looking like storyboards more than a traditional comic. His art is vibrant and full of color, with a painterly feel most of the time; I think it was mostly achieved through digital tools.

It’s been an interesting run-up to the Toronto International Film Festival, and in terms of the survival of the species, the good ol’ U.S.A. has been something of a race to the bottom. What would do us in first: violent neo-Nazis whose activities are almost explicitly condoned by the Klansman In Chief? Or a 1,000-year weather event on the Gulf Coast whose magnitude surely owes something to global climate change, and whose aftermath of collapsing dams and exploding chemical factories has everything to do with systematic neglect?Given the state of things down here, who wouldn’t want to repair to Canada for some challenging cinema? As always, the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) is the place to be in September, and Wavelengths once again features the best of the fest. This is because the films selected for Wavelengths are the opposite of escapism. Whether they tackle...

Ellen DeGeneres is celebrating the 15th season of her daytime talk show this year, but the longtime host’s career was nearly sidelined due to bullying.
“The bullying I endured after I came out made up for the lack of it during my childhood,” DeGeneres, 59, tells Good Housekeeping in her September cover interview, on newsstands Aug. 15.
“I moved out of L.A., went into a severe depression, started seeing a therapist and had to go on antidepressants for the first time in my life,” the host explains.

As if the director wasn’t grabbing headlines already, Karan is at the receiving end of another controversy now. This time, joining him are fellow Iifa co-hosts Saif Ali Khan and student Varun Dhawan. How did this happen now? It all went awry when Karan and Saif, who were the hosts for the evening at Iifa 2017, decided to have a little fun with the star kids and nepotism row intiated with Kangana Ranaut’s episode of Koffee with Karan. Varun Dhawan, who won the award for the best actor in a comic role, went up to the stage to collect his award and Karan joined him on the stage. Varun, Karan and Saif stood together. Wondering what’s common between them? Varun is the son of director David Dhawan while Saif is the son of actress Sharmila Tagore and Karan is just the preferred launch-pad of star kids, a fact...

The Altantic is hoping its erudite brand of journalism can make for a compelling viewing experience. Almost four years after it posted its first YouTube video, the DC-based publication has recently launched several new shows on its official channel. The latest of those programs, You Are Here, offers scientific explanations related to curious subjects.
The first episode of You Are Here, posted on May 25th, looks to explain why Americans smile more than people from other nations. The answer, delivered by The Atlantic’s Olga Khazan, is linked to economics, immigration, and several other topics.
As noted by Digiday, which published an examination of The Atlantic’s video strategy, new shows like You Are Here will join the other content already available through the outlet’s YouTube channel, including explanatory animators, short documentaries, and content hosted by The Atlantic’s staffers. That combination of video formats resembles the mix employed by Vox,...

Mubi is showing Daniel Cockburn's You Are Here (2010) nearly worldwide from September 29 to October 28, 2016.I called American philosopher John Searle on the telephone. I told him I was planning to direct a film that would include a dramatization of his famous "Chinese Room" thought experiment, which is sort of a pessimistic cousin to the Turing Test. I said I was hoping he would grant me permission to do so. He said: "Well… I'm very busy."(1)The film's production designer made Styrofoam props of a book which is a key element of Searle's thought experiment. After finishing the film, I carried these fake books with me from home to home, though I never had a use for them. After eight years, I finally threw them out. The next day, my six-year-old niece asked what a "film prop" is. I said: "If you had asked me that question at any earlier point in your life,...

Natalie Portman highlighted the power of overconfidence — and the obliviousness of youth — while addressing Harvard's graduating class. "You are here for a reason. Sometimes, your insecurities and your inexperience may lead you to embrace other people's expectations, standards or values, but you can harness that inexperience to carve out your own path," she said on Thursday, pointing to her directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. "My complete ignorance to my own limitations looked like confidence and got me into the director's chair," said Portman. "Once there,

The doe-eyed , baby-faced Swedish actress Christina Lindberg is best known for starring as Frigga in the 1974 rape and revenge classic Thriller, A Cruel Picture, which was released in the U.S. under the title They Call Her One Eye. Born in 1950, the voluptuous Ms Lindberg was an incredibly popular nude model in men’s magazines before beginning her movie career, which lasted from about 1970 to 1975. Her debut was the 1971 hit Maid In Sweden followed by more successful “soft-core” sex dramas such as Anita The Swedish Nymph, Exposed, Campus Swingers, Swedish Wildcats, Young Playthings and a dozen or so more. She went to Japan in 1973 and co-starred in Sex And Fury and Sex In Japan. Otherwise all of her movies were made in Sweden where she has lived her entire life. Christina refused to act in the hardcore sex films that began to dominate the industry by the mid-1970’s and...

As a huge fan of Matthew Weiner's Mad Men, I've been eagerly anticipating his feature film debut, and so was disappointed to hear about the negative critical reaction to You Are Here when it debuted at the Toronto film festival last fall. Weiner has since indicated that the film was unfinished. He edited it further, reshaping the material, and the refashioned project has been dubbed Are You Here (no question mark), which makes no particular sense. Without having seen the first version, I can't comment on the changes, but I can describe the new version as a movie that plays as though it's a work in progress ... that makes no particular sense. Owen Wilson stars as Steve Dallas, a TV weatherman in Annapolis, Maryland....

One Has to Ask: Weiner’s Debut a Floundering Misfire
Success sometimes has a blindsiding effect on self-criticism and control, which may very well be the excuse for the feature directorial debut of “Mad Men” and “The Sopranos” scribe Matthew Weiner, Are You Here, which is a nauseous, floundering excuse for a film. If you’re confused about whether you’re meant to laugh at or feel pity for these unengaging stereotyped people, it’s probably because the cast seems unsure of this as well. Painfully, obnoxiously miscast, there isn’t one single moment that works in the entire film, which is nearly two hours. Originally titled You Are Here when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2013, it’s as if the refashioning of statement to question is posed for anyone left in the audience that stayed until the end credits.

More than a few recognizable titles in today's MPAA bulletin beginning with a Cannes Film Festival hopeful in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman starring Michael Keaton and Edward Norton. Fox Searchlight will distribute the pic, and I'm sure they're hoping for a good showing in the South of France before they set an official release date on what won't be your typical superhero-esque movie. Next is Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow co-starring Emily Blunt as the sci-fi version of Groundhog Day receives a PG-13 ratings as does Warner Bros.'s Godzilla remake. No surprise on either front. And from mutant monsters to medieval dragons, Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon 2 scored a PG rating as did Radius' food documentary Fed Up. "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" is one of the most interesting, accessible and beautiful pieces of scientific television to appear in decades -- basically since the original "Cosmos" with Carl Sagan. Revived by host (and astronomer) Neil deGrasse Tyson, Seth MacFarlane (yes, the "Family Guy" guy) and Ann Druyan (Sagan's widow), the new "Cosmos" aims to bring the universe's beauty and wonder to audiences.
Does it succeed?
As long as "Cosmos" sticks to the science it knows best, yes. "Cosmos" is almost as scientifically amazing as it is beautiful. This is no dry textbook -- it's a fun and informative look at the universe.
When "Cosmos" falters -- possibly fatally for some -- is in taking tentative steps away from science and into realms like history and religion. Possibly offensive to some, certainly confusing to many and occasionally inaccurate, "Cosmos" isn't so great in these areas.
But let's look at the show's considerable success first.

When the slate of shows set to premiere during the 2013-2014 television season were announced, one of the more intriguing shows was the Fox series Almost Human. Created by J.H. Wyman and produced by J.J. Abrams, the show set in the future had Karl Urban and Michael Ealy as cop partners, but with a twist; Ealy was to play an android. With the show’s first season finale airing earlier this week, impressions about the show could now be fully formed. Unfortunately, the first season revealed a show unable to decide what it wanted to be, and was ultimately a letdown, due to a number of problems.
Almost Human has gotten a few things right, chief among them the casting. Giving the role of Dorian the android to Michael Ealy, in particular, is a fantastic choice that has made for enjoyable moments every week. Ealy is...

Ealy is...

For those who are only interested in seeing Benedict Cumberbatch crawling around on all fours, snarling like a monster while dressed in nothing but some tight gray spandex, you can just scroll on down to the video at the bottom of this post. You are here for one reason and one reason only, and we respect that. For anyone who needs a little substance regarding said crawling, the video is a behind-the-scenes featurette of Benedict Cumerbatch's performance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Benedict played a giant CG-animated dragon named Smaug, but nowadays, it's not just the voice that film makers want from their actors. They wanted everything from him, which sounds creepy but the results were...

I've been on pins and needles week to week waiting on news that Almost Human, my new favorite sci-fi show, will be safe for a second season. The show, which has its flaws, has won a top spot in my heart due mainly to its setting and the awesome dynamic between Michael Ealy and Karl Urban. A couple months back I wrote an article talking about how much better the show would be if it had further pursued the long term story set up in the pilot episode from the get go as opposed to disregarding it and having "filler" episodes. Recently the show has revisited the original plot and things have gotten really good, but now I'm reading that this wasn't an issue with the show, But With Fox Rearranging Episodes.

Gina Carano guest stars in this week's Almost Human, which poses more questions than it answers...
This review contains spoilers.
1.9 Unbound
What with the standard cast costs, Almost Human must have blown its budget substantially this week on guest stars. For starters they introduced the lethal female counterpart to Dorian, the lovely Danica, played by ex-mma fighter Gina Carano, who manages to be all-woman and all-synthetic killing machine in one, and neatly resolves the mystery about what dangerous object is sat in the police evidence locker.
And, if that wasn’t enough - and I’d never suggest to Carano's face it wouldn’t be - they also chucked in the mercurial John Larroquette, as the creator of the Drn series, Dr Nigel Vaughn.
While I’ve no issues with what Gina Carano brought to this story, I do have question marks about John Larroquette.

Almost Human, Season 1, Episode 9: “Unbound”
Written by Jeffrey Hunt
Directed by Graham Roland
Airs Mondays at 8 P.M. Et on Fox
“I don’t know if you know what it’s like to be part of something that defines you forever and in a way that you do not wish to be defined.”
It’s easy to see a person for their most prominent attributes- whether it’s their actions, origins, or appearance- and to reduce them to a stereotype. Both Kennex and Dorian have been fighting against the limitations others have placed on them from the start of the show: for Kennex, it’s the physical handicap that resulted from perceived failure and his resentment towards the technology on which he is dependent in order to function; and for Dorian, the unpredictable nature of existing as a man-made creation and the doubt that isolates him from his colleagues.

Almost Human, Season 1, Episode 8: “You Are Here”
Written by J. H. Wyman & Naren Shankar
Directed by Sam Hill
Airs Mondays at 8 P.M. Et on Fox
“So close, yet so far away. That must be frustrating…”
In every episode following the pilot, we’ve seen Kennex and Dorian solve case after case with barely a mention of the criminal organization that infiltrated the police department in the show’s premiere. “You Are Here” finally addresses the status of that investigation but taunts viewers by refusing to make any sudden moves.
Unfortunately for those watching eagerly to see the events from the pilot play out in a climactic showdown, the writing chooses to keep focus on a stand-alone case as per the norm, leaving only minutes for the actual Syndicate investigation. The cold open sets up a story with a decent enough premise- the murder of a tech genius leads...

Almost Human delivers its funniest episode yet. Here's Billy's review of You Are Here...
This review contains spoilers.
1.8 You Are Here
Before I get to this episode review, I’d like to say that generally I’m really enjoying this show. Sometimes you can get a very negative vibe from a production where those involved have already focused on their next project, and don’t really care, but not here. My impression is that while not every aspect of the show is working, enough is to keep people interesting in doing a professional job, and move things forward.
The perfect example of this is the early anger management sequence, which demonstrated why they pay Karl Urban the big bucks, and just how silly this show can be on occasions. This is probably the funniest it’s been so far, and hints that should things not work out,...

Fox’s Almost Human You Are Here TV Show Review. Almost Human: Season 1, Episode 8: ‘You are Here,’ brought things back to the beginning for the series; but more on that later. Are things with Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth heating up — again? Amidst reports of a looming reconciliation, Miley tweeted out a romantic song lyric that definitely makes it seem like she’s still got it bad for Liam!
When she said the whole thing was like a wrecking ball, she wasn’t kidding! Miley Cyrus, 21, seems to be inching closer and closer to a reconciliation with Liam Hemsworth, 23. On Dec. 12, the raunchy young singer even tweeted a quote from a love song that seemed to be directed at her handsome ex-flame. Read on for more details!
Miley Cyrus Tweets ‘I Only Have Eyes For You’
Maybe Miley was just really into The Flamingos on Dec. 12, but since her “I only have eyes for you” tweet (which she topped off with a heart!) came only days after news broke of secret meetings with Liam, we think it definitely had a hidden meaning!

The Toronto Film Festival came to a close last night with Steve McQueen's period slavery epic "12 Years a Slave" taking the top honor of the People's Choice Award.
Four of the past five winners of the award have gone on to be nominated for Best Picture, and two have won - "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The King's Speech".
It's no surprise then that "Slave" has jumped to the top of various Oscar pundits list following the Fall film festival circuit according to Gold Derby. 'Slave' was the film that scored the biggest jump in a poll of 18 experts in the awards prediction field over the past few weeks.
David O. Russell's "American Hustle" and Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" remain in second and third place (both have yet to screen), but jumping to fourth is Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" following rave reviews out of all three recent film festivals.

The Weinstein Company has closed a $7m deal with a $20m P&A commitment for Us rights to Can a Song Save Your Life? following Saturday night’s hit world premiere that concluded a second early major deal after Bad Words.

Even though Steve Peck was the one to refer to himself as Captain of the Universe, there were others who could have easily carried the title in "You Are Here."
As a matter of fact, Steve waffled between cute and annoying as his disappointment over Traci's rejection had him trying to take over her first solo case. I was relieved that Traci's gained enough confidence not to let him do it. She might still be a rookie detective, but she's learned a lot over the last year.
I'm still not entirely sure if Traci and Steve are the right fit, but I wouldn't mind seeing them give it a try.
The hero of Traci's case was Chloe, who started the hour feeling completely undervalued as the booking fairy. How perfect that she was the one to help bring Chuck down. I'd guessed he was the mastermind behind the Grow-Op early on.

Eight years after its festival debut, the lo-fi drama Satellite, chocked with obscure Indie band gems and unlikely romantic gestures is now available. Giving bad press to a tiny film with a lot of heart is taxing, but there are enough successes in the sometimes shoddy romantic fable written, directed and edited by Jeff Winner to give a review in good conscience. Unlike his equally under-financed You Are Here (2000), the sophomore feature from the Nyu filmmaking program graduate has a few vaguely recognizable actors and will presumably reach a sizable audience. Satellite made its festival rounds in 2005, winning Special Jury Prize at the Madrid Film Festival after a world premiere at Tribeca. At long last, the indie feature was made available on iTunes, Amazon and VOD earlier this month.
The love story begins when Ro, played by the boyish gap-toothed French model Stephanie Szostak, follows a pouty-lipped stranger to a Southwestern themed Brooklyn bar.
