Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder's Gruen is back for its 12th season on the ABC from September 9.
The series, which debuted in 2008, will return with Will anderson as host and executive producer. Advertising execs Todd Sampson and Russell Howcroft will also rejoin the panel.
But, according to a company statement, the show will include new panelists from spin doctors and marketing gurus both in Australia and visiting..
This time round the show will focus on the increasingly sophisticated methods advertisers are using to target their intended audience.
"We.re still the show that analyses what most other shows are there to sell: advertising. But we.re also the show that knows you can.t click on a link without surrendering all your personal data to a corporation trying to sell you shampoo," according to a Cjz statement..
"Gruen will run an X-Ray over advertising, spin, branding, positioning and image control, wherever they are found.

The new grant is part of the Safc.s renewed focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander filmmaking which was highlighted as a key priority for new chief executive, Annabelle Sheehan, on her appointment to the role in January 2015.
It also follows Safc.s funding of five Sa Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander filmmakers to make Micro-Documentaries.

In this guest post, Naked’s Adam Ferrier argues that the communications industry has a chance to turn Afl grand final ad breaks into an event similar to the Super Bowl
The two biggest annual sporting events in the world – as judged by TV audience size are the UEFA Champions League Final (European soccer) and The Super Bowl (USA Football). The advertising during the Super Bowl is becoming as famous as the Super Bowl itself. The Eufa Champions League Final has nothing of the sort.
The USA has always admired advertising and sales. Being in ‘sales’ in America is worn with pride, in Europe it’s seen as slightly ‘grubby’. Same with advertising. American’s have long revered advertising, and of course have recently created Mad Men, a long running TV series glorifying the golden years of advertising. It’s a tricky one launching a new TV season. You’ve got to look confident even if you’re in strife. But you shouldn’t sing too loudly if you’re winning.
Last week, what little commentary around Seven’s upfronts that didn’t focus on Celebrity Splash was on their somewhat triumphalist approach.
Fair to say, that wasn’t a criticism that could be levelled at Ten this morning.
The first word I had back from one media buyer who was at the Sydney presentation was “humble”.
As well they might be after the year they’ve just had.
But in terms of 2013, I suspect that the 500 or so people in the room will have left more confident in the network then they were at the start of the day.
Stability is the strategy. Gone are the risks of I will Survive, Everybody Dance Now and being Lara Bingle.

Gruen Planet has moved to reassure its viewers that Y&R Brands boss Russel Howcroft’s move to Ten will not spell an end to his appearing on the ABC show.
After several fans took to Facebook to express their concerns about Howcroft’s job move, Gruen posted a message saying that Howcroft would still be allowed to appear.
Howcroft would not be the first media person working for a rival organisation with a regular ABC gig. Alan Kohler, who writes for News Limited’s Business Spectator is a regular on ABc television.
Along with Leo Burnett’s Todd Sampson, Howcroft has been with the Zapruder’s Other Films-created show since The Gruen Transfer first started pulling back the curtain on the advertising world nearly five years ago. last week, Gruen Transfer was revealed as Australia’s favourite TV show at the Mumbrella Awards. The show is hosted by Wil Anderson.

How to sell the carbon tax is the brief agencies will tackle on tonight’s episode of Gruen Planet.
In the second episode of the show’s return, The Pitch will see Moose Moore of One For All and Charlie Cook of Jimjam go head to head.
The brief for the segment is: “The Federal Government has spent millions employing its best minds, but clearly has no hope of ever convincing us to like the carbon tax. Could two ad agencies do it in under a minute?”
The episode will also look at the use of Doug Pitt and his recent visit to Australia as part of One Green Been and Euro Rscg’s Fair Go Bro campaign for Virgin Mobile.
Naked Communication’s Adam Ferrier and Harry M Miller Group’s CEO Lauren Miller Cilento are guest panelists.
The Gruen Transfer airs at 8.30pm on ABC1.

I always thought that being a footballer must be one of the worst jobs in the world. Having thousands of people watching you up close and howling at your every error.
If I tried to cope with that in my day job, my spelling would be even worse than it is already.
But being a TV programmer must be worse.
There aren’t many gigs where millions of people judge your work every single day.
Every morning at 8.30am, the ratings come through – and we all find out if they are dunces or geniuses.
Right now, it’s the turn of Ten’s David Mott in the firing line. This year, he took a chance on several new pieces of Australian-made programming and so far most of them have not fired.
Which leaves the network struggling for audience share and facing dreadful headlines.
I’m part of that problem, by the way.

One of the independent TV production sector’s most successful collaborations is coming to an end with Anita Jacoby reported to be departing Zapruder’s Other Films, the company she created with Andrew Denton.
Zof merged with Cordell Jigsaw earlier this year.
Zof’s many successful productions have included The Gruen Transfer, Enough Rope and Hungry Beast. The company is also responsible for Can of Worms, Randling and ABC1′s Country Town Rescue.
Jacoby told The Australian: “I only came together with Andrew for 13 weeks to make Enough Rope but it lasted 11 years.”

In this guest post, Sarah Ballard and Sean Rintel warn that marketers who rely too heavily on online influence measurement system Klout may be foolish to do so
Klout is increasingly becoming a hot new marketing metric. But basic tests suggest that it offers highly questionable results. We asked: Could undergraduate students really have more Klout than Gruen Transfer panellists Todd Sampson and Russel Howcroft? While The Gruen Transfer’s panelists may be among the top Australians in the business of influence, the Klout online social influence measurement service shows that typical undergraduates appear to have as much online influence as Gruen panelists.

Companies such as PeerIndex and Klout claim to measure influence by weighing up combinations of platforms, followers, and sharing. The Gruen Transfer franchise is to return to ABC1 next month with a four episode Olympics special titled Gruen Sweat followed by ten episodes of Gruen Planet which goes beyond advertising into the world of spin.
Both shows will run at 8.30pm on Wednesdays in the timeslot currently occupied by Randling, which is also produced by Andrew Denton’s Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder.
Randling will move to 9.15pm.

The team behind Bonds’ ambitious Birthday Project will share learnings and results from the marketing campaign in one of the opening sessions of Mumbrella360.
The idea of the campaign was to find an Australian with a different date of birth for every day of the company’s history since 1915. Every one of them would then receive a free T-shirt, individualised with their date of birth.
The project, conceived by Clemenger Bbdo Melbourne, kicked off in February with a blaze of publicity after a media event featuring iconic Australians ranging from Dame Edna to Sarah Murdoch.
At the time Mumbrella predicted it would be the campaign of 2012.
The campaign initially risked being a victim of its own success with a wave of media coverage threatening to overwhelm the We Are Bonds website which asked consumers to upload an image of themselves as they claimed their birth date. Uploads had to be...

Andrew Denton’s TV return Randling debuted with an average metro audience of 859,000 on ABC1 last night, beating Nine’s The Apprentice and Ten’s Offspring.
However, Revenge dominated the night for Seven with an average audience of 1.33m, according to preliminary overnight figures from OzTam.
The word game-based Randling is produced by Denton’s Zapruder’s Other Films and created by Denton and Jon Casimir, who also created The Gruen Transfer together.
Celebrity Apprentice rated 841,000 for the challenge section, from 8pm, and 815,000 for the boardroom confrontation from 8.30pm. The hourlong Offspring rated 629,000.
ABC1 saw a falloff after Randling with the season return of Laid rating just 424,000.

It seems controversy leads to awards. The two big winners at last night.s inaugural Aacta Awards were thriller feature film Snowtown and TV drama series The Slap. Both renowned for their controversial nature, the film and TV series netted four and five gongs respectively.
Snowtown, about Australian serial killer John Bunting who befriends a 16-year-old, was honoured in the Best Direction (Justin Kurzel), Best Adapted Screenplay (Shaun Grant), Best Actor (Daniel Henshall) and Best Supporting Actress (Louise Harris) categories.

Director Stephan Elliott took the opportunity to deliver a serve to film critic Jim Schembri at the inaugural Aacta awards at the Sydney Opera House last night. Elliott bit back at Schembri’s review of A Few Best Men, which branded the film ‘unreleasable’. Despite Schembri’s review, the film opened with solid box office takings last weekend. In a lengthy rant, Elliott slammed Schembri for “personal attacks” within the review of the film as he lashed out at people unwilling to support the Australian film industry. Elliott told the audience that his tirade would be removed from Channel Nine’s delayed broadcast of the awards as producers had flagged this, along with several other categories, to be excluded prior to the show.

The public broadcaster has had the fourth season of British drama Doc Martin slowly climbing over the past couple of weeks and in Week 46 the show entered the top Five.
Ranking fourth and two spots up from last week Doc Martin captured 1.375m metro viewers according to OzTAM. The show goes to air Saturdays, 7:30pm.
ABC1 had three programs in the top 20. The Gruen Transfer came in 12th with 1.175m and Spicks and Specks garnered 1.103m in 17th place. Aunty’s strong showing pushed it to third spot over all, with Channel Ten only receiving one program, NCIS – Tuesday, at 19th with 1.076m, in the top 20.
Seven and Nine both had eight shows in the top 20. Seven took top spot with Tuesday’s X Factor with 1.572m over Nine’s final Underbelly: Razor which...

Wil Anderson has revealed that he is looking forward to starting his Australian Man vs Wil tour. The 37-year-old comedian, who is best known as the host of ABC show The Gruen Transfer, said that he will continue to perform at any venue as long as there is "a stage" for him to stand on. When asked why he was heading out into remote parts of Australia such as Sale and Rockhampton as part of his tour, Anderson told the Herald Sun: "Why? Because this is the best part of the deal. "I've spent most of the year working on this show, so now I know exactly what works and it's kind of relaxed and I get to enjoy it more. As long as people are prepared to provide me with a stage, then I think I should make the most of that." Anderson admitted that the vibe at a...

Another strong week for Seven in week 37 as the network takes eight of the top ten shows including the top three spots.
The Gold rush-era bushranger drama starring Daniel McPherson and Michael Dorman, Wild Boys premiered on Sunday 4 September strongly, as the highest ranking show of the week with 1.685m. However, it’s second episode, airing last night, dropped to 1.398m.
All four X Factor Auditions performed strongly, despite some of the shows competitors performing poorly – but that’s the attraction. Tuesday’s episode came second in the week’s ratings with 1.637m. Wednesday’s episode was fifth at 1.525m, Monday’s episode was seventh with 1.475m and Thursday’s episode came ninth with 1.399m.
Packed to the Rafters was Seven’s other strong performer in third place with 1.621m, followed by Nine’s Underbelly: Razor at 1.564m.

With Mastechef out of the way, Ten failed to score one show in Week 34′s ratings top 20 – in fact, Ten’s highest ranking show was Talking ’bout Your Generation at a lowly 37.
It was a bumper week for the Nine Network however with seven places in the top ten including five episodes of The Block.
Last Sunday’s episode of the renovation show was the most viewed show with 2m viewers while in second place was Monday’s episode with 1.675m. The program placed 6th for Tuesday’s episode, 7th for Thursday’s and 8th for Wednesday’s scoring; 1.399m, 1.316m and 1.311m respectively, as it geared up for last night’s finale which racked up a very strong 3m viewers, the most viewed program of the year, despite the anticlimactic finish of three of the four houses passing in on the auction.

Wil Anderson and The Gruen Transfer will return to ABC1 on Wednesday 3 August at 9pm.

Advertising world experts Dan Gregory, Dee Madigan, Jeremy Nicholas, Bridget Taylor, jane Caro, Rowan Dean and Carolyn Miller will be part of the rotating panel of critics.

It was a big night for David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom and Jane Campion’s Bright Star at the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Industry Awards last night, with three statues each. Glenn Dunks reports.
The first of the AFI Awards ceremonies rewarded the technical crafts and behind-the-scenes players in a gala hosted by actor Shane Jacobson.
Opening with speeches by AFI Chief Executive Officer Damian Trewhalla and the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Susan Riley as well as a musical performance by Claire Bowditch, the night was also filled with some great material from Jacobson.
Animal Kingdom took out the night’s big prize of the Member’s Choice Award and is the odds on favourite to reap far bigger rewards at tonight’s major ceremony. Bright Star could pose a threat, however, after it’s big haul including two for Janet Patterson (Best Production Design, Best Costume Design),who wasn’t at the ceremony.

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.

It's midday and Australian tv legend Andrew Denton and his producing partner Anita Jacoby are locked in a cell.
There are bars on the one external window, the floors and ceilings are reinforced steel and only two other people besides Denton and Jacoby know the codes to get into the small room. To be here Denton and Jacoby have been granted top secret security clearance.
Andrew Denton But this is not an episode of the Aussie version of "Lockup." It's actually an edit suite for Denton and Jacoby's new observational documentary series, "Afp" (Australian Federal Police), which follows the inner-workings of Australia's equivalent of the FBI.
The 16-part series, filmed all over the world, is the most ambitious show in Denton's slate of original hit TV shows, and comes as he begins to increasingly eye global markets for his formats.

It’s been four years since Encore published its Top 20 Directors and Producers list, and we felt it was time to compile a new, more comprehensive list that included professionals working across all areas – film, television and Tvc production – as well as the leaders and decision-makers that determine the direction of the industry.
Instead of having a limited list of panellists, we consulted with the main agencies and organisations, and also asked our readers to nominate their candidates. We ended up with a list of more than 200 screen industry professionals, and deciding the final 50 was indeed a difficult task. Of course, some other very influential and successful people didn’t make the final cut, but there were only 50 spots and too many talented men and women!
We hope you’ll enjoy – or not, and if so, debate it passionately – the selection of what will become our annual Power 50 list.
