Diverse and exciting films contemplating on the theme of love By Shing Chung
This fall I started watching the 13th season of the TV series Film Lab Presents on Friday nights and the
episodes have been a blast for me quarantining at home. The series showcases a variety of Asian
American stories of contemporary drama, comedy, and everything in between. Lots of Asian American
faces in these contents! The show is produced by the Film Lab, a non-profit that works to promote,
support and create racial and gender parity in entertainment media.
Idle by RAWMIX Productions is about one man's journey in finding himself again after a break up. He
tries to keep contact with his ex-girlfriend by watching her YouTube videos, which ironically are about
finding self-love in the process of healing. People deal with loss of love in all kinds of different ways. Idle
is a unique story about its protagonist's own journey to find oneself again.
Hold by Team Red Phone tells a touching story about a daughter's relationship with her father who was
just moved into a care home during the frustrating time of Coronavirus. The story starts and ends with
narratives about "Sometimes it could be the smallest thing that helps you remember, that the only way out
of a pause, is to press play." The film is a contemplation on how Coronavirus, as devastating as it is, can
act as a catalyst for people to realize the most important things in their lives.
Listen Up by Team Root Beer is a sweet and simple comedy about a lady (Josephine Leffner), who
chooses to not talk and simply listen for 24 hours and her best friend (Matthew Bridges). Under the guise
of a comedy about one person talking and the other one only listening, we witness a subtext emerge from
the one sided discussion about the best friend's longing for his last boyfriend. In the end, Listen Up, just
like its title, is an example of how important practicing true listening is and sometimes the best thing you
can do for a friend is to listen.
