Powerful films about sympathy and hope in dire times By Shing Chung
This fall I started watching the 13th season of the TV series Film Lab Presents on Friday nights and the episodes have been a blast for me quarantining at home. The series showcases a variety of Asian American stories of contemporary drama, comedy, and everything in between. Lots of Asian American faces in these contents! The show is produced by the Film Lab, a non-profit that works to promote, support and create racial and gender parity in entertainment media.
Infectious, made by the production company, Griot Pancir Congee, told the story of a short encounter between a girl who is seemingly injured and in need of help, and the other person in a position to offer help. As we know in our society, encounters like this happen everyday but not all of the able people offer their helping hands. The film is both suspenseful and heart-warming at the same time, and cleverly inserts the theme of this year's Shootout, toilet paper, as the helping tool.
Mom by Team Jay Sean is a comedically relatable short film about a son's relationship with his mom. The son is asked to live at home with his mom for 100 days for a million dollars. Though they love each other, the son is used to living on his own and troubles and inconveniences soon arise on day 1. The short film is a hilarious montage of a son having a hard time living at home with his mom and it is a personal and relatable story about an immigrant family.
Last Alive by Team Omega is a story about survival and hope in a desperate time. The story follows a lone survivor in a sort of zombie apocalypse. Though we see no zombie throughout the film, we get an intimate look at the survivor's moments of despair at home. During the film, however, he finds a group of survivors through his video channel and that gives him the hope that he was looking for. But can he hold on to that slimmer of hope when he finds out that the group of survivors are located on the other side of the country.
