Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase has brought an array of genres to the Moody Theater in Austin over four nights, from hip-hop to música mexicana, urbano to Afrobeats, and beyond. The final night was all about guitars, bringing together acts from indie rock, country, and more who love the instrument. And for Faye Webster, that instrument is pedal steel guitar in particular.

Death Becomes Him: Larrain Resurrects a Dictator in Bizarre Black Comedy
For his most subversive film to date (and likely the most beautiful and perverse deliberation on a dictator), Pablo Larraín returns to the subject of Augusto Pinochet, the unifying element of his breakout thematic trilogy. Strange can’t rightly describe this narrative, co-written by his regular scribe Guillermo Calderon, channeling some of the same elements from their 2015 collaboration The Club. In short, this portrait of Pinochet imagines the dictator as a 250 year old vampire, purportedly who has made a decision to die, therefore allowing his five human children to claim their rightful inheritance.…...

Born on Nov. 25, 1915, Augusto José Ramón Pinochet would rise through the ranks of the Chilean military and, having become commander-in-chief of the nation’s army, lead a coup against the country’s president Salvador Allende in 1973. This would kick off Pinochet’s political reign — and reign of terror — for the next 17 years. He’d escape persecution for the countless crimes committed during his regime and was unrepentant about his dictatorship (what were mass graves of dissidents but more “efficient ways of burials?”) up until his death in 2006.
This is what the history books tell us.

Just four days ago was the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup d’etat, when Augusto Pinochet came to absolute power in Chile. The Pinochet we all know and have heard of died in 2006, but El Conde, the new Netflix film, has a surprise for you. Pinochet is alive, and what happened in 2006, when Pinochet stopped his heart and pretended to die, was just one of his skills as a vampire. Yes, the Chilean dictator is actually a 250-year-old vampire who invites trouble after he is suspected of having been on a killing spree, feasting on the hearts of people. Vampires are known to do that. Eating hearts ensures that they grow young. This satirical black comedy, directed by Pablo Larrain, brings him back to familiar territory, dealing with Augusto Pinochet and the aftermath of his military dictatorship. In 2012, Larrain directed the critically acclaimed “No,” and here he is again dealing with ‘Pinochetism,...

Exclusive: Veteran Actor Alfredo Castro is in the middle of what could be described as a mid-career boom, but he doesn’t think it’ll bring him many plaudits in his native country.
“I think I will have to leave Chile,” Castro joked as he sat down with Deadline virtually from Santiago.
Last month, Castro was out in Cannes with The Settlers (Los Colonos), a tight and shrewd historical drama from Felipe Gálvez. Set in Chile at the beginning of the 20th century, the pic follows a wealthy landowner, played by Castro, who hires three horsemen to mark out the perimeter of his extensive property and open a route to the Atlantic Ocean across vast Patagonia. The expedition, composed of a young Chilean mestizo, an American mercenary, and led by a reckless British lieutenant, soon turns into a “civilizing” raid against Chile’s indigenous population.

The 18th Santiago Int’l Film Festival (Sanfic) is paying tribute to Chile’s most internationally renowned and arguably hardest working actor, the peripatetic Alfredo Castro who will attend Sanfic’s inauguration Aug. 14 to receive his lifetime achievement award and kick off a retrospective of his films.
Also a playwright and theater director, Castro has worked across Europe and Latin America, acting in French, Spanish, Portuguese and a number of accents and dialects from Latin America, including neutral Spanish. “I haven’t worked in English but I certainly hope to one day,” he says. Meanwhile, he has won a boatload of awards from festivals and award events across the world.
Yet, he would also be high up the order of figures who have helped shape Chile’s post-Pinochet film, theater and now TV scene into one of the most vibrant, surprising and constantly questioning of any country in Latin America.

“Spencer” director Pablo Larraín has teamed with Netflix for his next film “El Conde,” a fantastical dark comedy revolving around Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Production on the film is underway.
Larraín will direct “El Conde” and also co-wrote the script with his regular writing partner Guillermo Calderón, with whom he has already worked on “The Club” and “Neruda.” Juan de Dios Larraín is producing.

Jaime Vadell and Gloria Münchmeyer will play the central couple in this historical dark comedy, in addition to actors Alfredo Castro and Paula Luchsinger.

Netflix and ‘Spencer’ director Pablo Larraín have gone into production on “El Conde,” a black comedy picturing bloody Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a 250-year-old vampire.
Larraín will share screenwriting credits with Guillermo Calderón, Chile’s foremost playwright and Larraín’s writing partner on “Neruda” and Berlin Grand Jury Prize winner “The Club,” the movie which persuaded Natalie Portman to play the lead in the Larraín-directed “Jackie.”
“El Conde” is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín at Fabula, the Larraín brothers’ Chile-based film-tv production house whose credits include “Spencer” and “Jackie,” all Larrain’s Chilean movies, and Sebastian Lelio’s 2018 Academy Award winning “A Fantastic Woman.”
Moving from fest-winning straight-arrow arthouse fare such as “Tony Manero” to movies with a wider audience appeal from 2012 Cannes Directors Fortnight winner “No,” starring Gael García Bernal and then into English-language titles from “Jackie,” Pablo Larrain has established himself in the vanguard of Latin American cinema.

Prestige French distribution house Dulac Distribution has closed rights to France on “1976,” one of the most awaited of films to come out of Chile this year, which will world premiere next month at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
The buzzed up title represents the first feature from young Chilean actor-turned-director Manuela Martelli, star of Andrés Wood’s “Machuca” and Alicia Scherson’s “Il Futuro.”
Worldwide sales rights on “1976” are represented by Paris-based Luxbox, adding to its lengthening list of high profile pick-ups from Latin America which include Nathalie Alvarez Mesén’s “Clara Sola,” Alejandra Márquez’s “The Good Girls,” Marcelo Martinessi’s “The Heiresses” and Benjamín Naishtat’s “Rojo.”
The acquisition in a key territory for non English-language art films comes just weeks after “1976” walked off with three of the biggest awards at the Toulouse Latin American Festival’s Films in Progress, including the pix-in-post competition’s Grand Prix and Cine Plus...

The Turkish TV market is being shaken up by the arrival of more U.S. streaming platforms, which are driving up production costs, but also providing a new burst of opportunity for talent, content creators and producers.
Netflix, which launched in Turkey in 2016, is the country’s streaming market leader when it comes to subs — which Netflix says are over 3.5 million — and in terms of its local originals’ output.
Disney Plus, which is expected to bow this summer, is busy mounting multiple Turkish productions that are still being kept under wraps, while HBO Max just entered the market and is also active in production.
Amazon Prime Video is also expected to start churning out Turkish originals in 2023.
“Disney Plus is investing in Turkey like there is no tomorrow,” says Ahmet Ziyalar, chief of Istanbul-based sales and production company Inter Medya.

Though the onslaught of streaming giants is impacting Turkey’s TV landscape, it’s not as though Turkish shows weren’t doing gangbuster global biz way before Netflix and other platforms arrived on the scene.
“Turkish dramas were already reaching audiences all over the world on linear TV,” says Ekin Koyuncu, head of prominent broadcaster Kanal D’s international sales arm. And that is why streamers are now so keen on making Turkish originals.
What changes with having Turkish originals streaming on global platforms is that “the age targets are totally different,” she says. “With this [platform] product, we are gaining the awareness of a younger population, especially in the U.S. and Europe, where our linear penetration is actually low.”
So “both sides are benefitting from each other,” Koyuncu points out.

Few productions set to air in 2022 promise the emotional impact and political urgency of “La Vida de Nosotras,” which translates to “Our Lives” in English, a five-part short-form series telling the true stories of 16 women – three or four per episode – who suffered from, fell victim to or overcame patriarchal violence.
Up-and-coming director Bárbara Barrera Morales directs all five of the series’ episodes, produced by International Emmy-winning filmmaker Hernán Caffiero and Btf Media co-founders Francisco Cordero and Ricardo Coeto. In fact, much of the film’s technical crew worked together on Caffiero’s Emmy-nominated series “Una Historia Necesaria.”
“La Vida de Nosotras” boasts an impressive cast in front of the camera as well, including cinema standouts such as “The Maid” lead Catalina Saacedra; Alejando Goic, who starred in Pablo Larraín’s Berlin Jury Prize-winner “The Club”; “Violeta Went to Heaven’s” Francisca Gavilan; and Amparo Noguera, who recently starred in “La Jauria,...

“Spencer” director Pablo Larraín has thrown his weight behind Chilean Oscar entry “White on White” (“Blanco en Blanco”), hailing it as a “really interesting, strange and highly violent film.”
“White on White” also addresses issues that are “highly unsettling and complex and which haven’t been resolved or at least discussed at sufficient length,” Larraín adds.
His words come from a conversation, which he moderates, with “White on White’s” director Théo Court and star Alfredo Castro that forms the latest Academy Awards Edition of CinemaChile Talks.
Some sort of sympathy for “White and White” may be inevitable.
Larraín was once a student of Castro’s, a notable theater director who has acted in six of Larraín’s nine films, starring in four: “Tony Manero,” Larrain’s 2008 breakout; 2010’s “Post Mortem”; 2012’s Oscar-nominated “No,” playing opposite Gael García Bernal; and 2015 Berlin Grand Jury Prize winner “The Club,” which persuaded Natalie Portman...

Starring Pablo Larraín regular Alfredo Castro, Chilean-Spanish writer-director Theo Court’s “White on White” (“Blanco en Blanco”) has been acquired for distribution in North America by Outsider Pictures.
The deal follows on the film’s world premiere this September at the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons sidebar, where Court won a Silver Lion for the section’s best director and a film writers’ Fipresci Prize. “White on White” was selected earlier this month as Chile’s submission for 2022’s Academy Awards in the international best feature film category.
Starring in Pablo Larrain’s 2008 breakthrough, “Tony Manero,” as well as his 2015 Berlin Grand Jury Prize winner “The Club,” Castro also headed Lorenzo Vigas’ 2015 Venice Golden Lion laureate “From Afar.”

The first edition of ONSeries Lisboa (Nov. 25-26) brought streaming platforms, international broadcasters and co-producers to Lisbon for a two-day event that showcased Portugal’s new TV series aimed at the international market.
Nuno Artur Silva, Portugal’s secretary of state for cinema, audiovisual and the media emphasized the economic potential of the country’s audiovisual sector and cited Spain’s public policy to create an audiovisual hub as an example to follow. For every €1 ($1.1) spent on audiovisual productions, €4 ($4.5) is generated for the domestic economy, he stated.
The country’s greater commitment to TV series is a direct result of public policy that aims to complement the country’s prowess in auteur cinema and telenovelas.
Key steps that have increased investment in series include the reorientation of pubcaster Rtp in 2015 to produce series rather than telenovelas, reinforcement of subsidy support for audiovisual production, launch of a cash rebate scheme in 2018 and transposition of the E.
