Beautiful and Meaningful Brickfilm
Windu Returns elevates the Star Wars fan film to new heights by prioritizing heart and meaningful character progression over solely trying to recreate the spectacle of the Star Wars franchise. That is not to discredit the film's dazzling animation, action, and visuals, but rather to say that those elements are used to make an already compelling story all the more memorable.
The theme of forgiveness and letting go of the past are at the core of this story, and while neither of these things are inherently new to Star Wars the presentation is quite fresh. The film is entirely unpretentious, presenting a fun Star Wars adventure that also has things to say and a reason to exist beyond celebrating Star Wars.
The specific implementation of characters such as Mace Windu and Darth Vader feel essential to tell this story, and the familiar elements feel justified much of the time. My one critique is that sometime the fan service goes a bit too far for my liking and feels gratuitous, it does not detract from my enjoyment.
There is a fantastic grimy atmosphere to it all. The world of the film feels incredibly fleshed out but also unique to the film compared to the rest of the Star Wars universe. The "feel" of the film is what is most vivid in my mind. The film both "is" Star Wars but strives to do something new with it. It works both as fun action/adventure storytelling but never feels superficial. Truly one of the most inventive fan films ever made.
