In the game of showbiz, sometimes, even if the biz is breaking down, the show must go on. The Toronto International Film Festival is still scheduled to kick off even if the bevy of guests are not able to make appearances due to actors forbidden to promote their films during the SAG-AFTRA strike. TIFF will not be the only event weathering this challenge should the strike continue this festival season.
Regardless of the unrest in Hollywood, the Toronto International Film Festival has just released the list of movies set to screen this year. How long does a documentary need to be? Frederick Wiseman frequently goes long, and Oscar-winning “Oj: Made in America” ran nearly eight hours. Lately, with “Bill Russell: Legend” and “Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker,” streamers have embraced the “two-part documentary” — a fancy term for what used to be called a miniseries. So, while there are no limits on how much longer docs can get, it’s refreshing to see a compelling subject covered in 40 minutes or less, and doubly rewarding to realize that four of the five packaged in ShortsTV’s “2023 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Documentary” found audiences on their own merits, even without theatrical distribution.

Turns out Maya isn’t the only musician in the Hawke/Thurman family. Ethan Hawke is making his debut as a music artist this month in an unexpected place: iconic pop-punk band Fall Out Boy’s upcoming eighth studio album, “So Much (for) Stardust.”
The news was announced by the “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” band on Friday, via a Twitter post revealing the full tracklist of their upcoming record. Hawke is listed as a featured guest on the song “The Pink Seashell,” and the only guest on the 13-track album. Fall Out Boy — which consists of Patrick Stump, Pete Wentz, Andy Hurley, and the on-hiatus Joe Trohman — has promoted the album with two singles, “Love from the Other Side” and “Heartbreak Feels So Good,” released in January.

Liam Neeson hasn’t kept count, but someone in the Open Road marketing department sure did: Marketing for Neil Jordan’s “Marlowe,” which casts the Oscar nominee as Raymond Chandler’s iconic gumshoe Philip Marlowe, note that the actor has reached the milestone of appearing in 100 films. If that’s not reason enough to speak to the 70-year-old Irish actor about the breadth of his cinematic career, what could possibly be?

Blake Lively has joined the cast of Sony’s upcoming adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s ‘It Ends With Us.’
Justin Baldoni is set to direct and also star alongside Lively.
The story follows a small-town girl Lily, who moves to Boston to start her own business. Sparks immediately fly between her and neurosurgeon Ryle, but his “complete aversion to relationships is disturbing,” the book’s description reads. “Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his ‘no dating’ rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place. As questions about her new relationship overwhelms her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan — her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.”

Maya Hawke is set to take a leading role in a biopic about one of America's most indelible writers. According to Deadline, the "Stranger Things" and "Do Revenge" actor is set to star in and executive produce the film "Wildcat," which her father Ethan Hawke will direct and produce. "Wildcat" will tell the story of 20th-century Southern writer Flannery O'Connor, whose disturbing, religion-fueled Southern Gothic stories like "A Good Man is Hard To Find" and the novel "Wise Blood" remain literary mainstays to this day.
Maya Hawke will reportedly star as a young O'Connor in the stage before she published her first novel in 1952. The film is apparently a passion project for the star, with Ethan Hawke telling Deadline, "Maya has been working hard for years to put this project together, and we're grateful for the opportunity to introduce a new generation of filmgoers to the genius of Flannery O'Connor.

Two of the best documentaries of 2022 are films set in the jungles of South America. The first is a doc from Sundance 2022 called The Territory (read my review), about a tribe of Natives defending their land from invading "farmers" in Brazil who are coming in and slashing/burning the rainforest they live in. The second one, titled Wildcat, initially premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is launching on Amazon Prime Video for viewing at the end of December this year. Wildcat is co-directed by filmmakers Trevor Frost and Melissa Lesh and it's a beautiful little film about the relationship between a wild ocelot being rescued in the jungles of Peru, and a young Australian man struggling to deal with intense Ptsd and depression. In both films, the big bad villain is capitalism and humans addicted to taking resources without any care or concern for Mother Nature or the land they're stealing the resources from.

The animal kingdom may not be fair, but it makes sense. There’s a logic to it, a system of order. Predators hunt prey: it is a world of desperation and aggression. Deep in the jungles of Peru, a young Afghanistan war veteran named Harry Turner recuses himself from public life to pursue a simpler way of being. Out in the middle of nowhere, five hours from the nearest major city, Turner rehabilitates lost, injured and orphaned animals, hoping, perhaps, to heal himself in the process.
“Wildcat,” by first-time directors Trevor Beck Frost (a National Geographic photojournalist) and his editing and producing partner Melissa Lesh, takes an intimate look at Turner and his work to rehab critters and creatures of every size. Turner, a lanky, tattooed Brit, is a charming, boyish man who went away to the Army when he was only 18. He was discharged with health issues, namely severe Ptsd and depression.

Telluride saw the world premiere of a new wildlife documentary called Wildcat that has unmistakable appeal to animal lovers as well as admirers of astonishing true-life stories. Amazon will screen the movie this fall. The South American ocelot that is at the center of this tale of animal rescue and liberation will attract audiences, but the human characters in this saga hold at least as much appeal.
Harry Turner had enlisted in the British army in Afghanistan when he was only 18, and the horrors that he observed there traumatized him and led to suicidal behavior. When he traveled to the Peruvian Amazon, he found a new purpose. While he was there, he met a woman named Samantha Zwicker who was involved in a project to rescue wild animals threatened by poachers. The two of them eventually established a personal as well as professional...

Eight years ago, Edward Snowden became the centerpiece of the Oscar race for Best Documentary as the subject of director Laura Poitras’ eventual winner “Citizenfour.” This time, that centerpiece slot goes to Nan Goldin, the photographer and activist hero of Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.”
The movie launched to rave reviews at Venice over the weekend and sneaked into a morning Tba slot on the last day of the Telluride Film Festival, where many audience members emerged in tears. That response is likely to continue as the movie travels to the Toronto International Film Festival and later New York, where it will be — appropriately enough — the festival’s centerpiece selection.
“All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” is in good hands. Participant Media produced the project and will release it October 7 with Neon, which previously distributed her Julian Assange documentary “Risk.” Neon CEO Tom Quinn also spearheaded the successful “Citizenfour” campaign at Radius-twc.
