Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum is a Malayalam movie directed by Akhil Sathyan and starring Fahadh Faasil, Anjana Jayaprakash, Vineeth and Viji Venkatesh. The movie is supposed to be a feel-good comedy drama that revolves around a young man who helps an elderly woman and a young girl in their quest for education and freedom. However, the movie fails to deliver on its promise and ends up being a boring, cliched and predictable affair that wastes the talents of its actors and the potential of its premise.
The movie suffers from a weak script that tries to emulate the style of Sathyan Anthikad, Akhil's father and a veteran filmmaker known for his family-oriented movies. However, Akhil lacks the finesse and flair of his father and ends up making a movie that feels like a poor imitation of his father's works. The movie has no originality or freshness and relies on outdated tropes and stereotypes that have been seen in many other movies before. The movie also drags on for nearly three hours, with unnecessary subplots and songs that add nothing to the story or the characters.
The movie also fails to create any emotional connection with the audience, as the characters are poorly written and developed. Fahadh Faasil plays Prakashan, a charming but selfish businessman who agrees to help Laila (Viji Venkatesh), his landlord's mother, in exchange for ownership of his shop space. However, he soon realizes that Laila is on a mission to rescue Nidhi (Dhwani Rajesh), her maid's daughter who is being exploited by her step-grandmother and her goons in Goa. Prakashan decides to help Laila and Nidhi out of sympathy and guilt, and also falls in love with Dhwani (Anjana Jayaprakash), a local girl who assists them. However, none of these relationships are convincing or engaging, as they are based on superficial motives and coincidences. The movie does not explore the motivations or backgrounds of any of the characters, nor does it show any growth or change in them. The movie also fails to address the serious issues of child labour, education and women's empowerment that it touches upon, and instead resorts to melodrama and comedy that are neither funny nor touching.
The movie also wastes the talents of its actors, who try their best to salvage the movie with their performances. Fahadh Faasil is one of the finest actors in Malayalam cinema today, but he has nothing much to do in this movie except look charming and act confused. Anjana Jayaprakash is a newcomer who shows some potential, but her character is poorly written and has no depth or personality. Vineeth plays Riyas, Prakashan's landlord and Laila's son, who has a dual personality of being a ruthless businessman and a caring son. However, his character is also underdeveloped and inconsistent. Viji Venkatesh plays Laila, the spunky senior who wants to help Nidhi achieve her dreams. She is the only character who has some spark and humour in the movie, but even she gets sidelined by the end of the movie. Dhwani Rajesh plays Nidhi, the young girl who wants to study and become a doctor. She is cute and innocent, but her character is also one-dimensional and stereotypical.
In conclusion, Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum is a disappointing movie that fails to live up to its title or its genre. It is neither magical nor wonderful, but rather dull and tedious. It is a movie that could have been much better if it had a stronger script, better direction and more originality. It is a movie that does not deserve your time or money.
