I am childfree this week (it's sleep-away camp time), but that doesn't mean I don't have recommendations for what you and your kids should see during family movie time. Without the kids around to help pick the movies, I've selected three titles I think adults will enjoy as much as kids (that means no CGI-live action hybrids, no offense to "Smurfs" or "Alvin and the Chipmunks" fans).
By the way, have you streamed a great family movie lately on Netflix, Hulu, or iTunes? Let us know in the comments, and we'll consider it for future editions of "Streaming Family Movies."
Rated G Pick: "Cars Toons: Mater's Tall Tales" (2010, 36 minutes)
Netflix
Amazon Instant
iTunes

Disney has unveiled a series of character for this Halloween's "Frankenweenie," a black-and-white stop-motion feature from Tim Burton and Disney that was based on a short film of his that got him fired from the studio back in the mid-eighties (seriously). The posters and characters look appropriately Tim Burton-y (maybe a little too much – some of the characters seem like slightly redressed designs from "The Corpse Bride" and the dog looks very "Family Dog"-esque). In other Disney animation news, the studio has quietly slipped a new "Cars Toon" short film onto iTunes and Amazon, which ties in directly to the new Carsland section of Disney California Adventure.
Firstly, the "Frankweenie" stuff – it looks pretty great. We get a look at all the major characters, both human and animal (the titular resurrected pooch is named Sparky) and while this stuff is pretty basic, it is kind of a thrill...

It's a Wonderful Life: Collector's Edition Gift Set This is essentially the same Blu-ray that was released last year only this time around they include a collectible booklet and a cheap little novelty bell, but I love this movie so much I couldn't help but kick off this week with this new edition. However, if you want to buy it and save $7 you can buy the non-gift set edition [amazon asin="B001UHOWXI" text="right here"], you just won't get the bell or booklet.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind I first saw Confessions of a Dangerous Mind back in 2003 and really liked it. I bought the DVD that same year and haven't watched it a second time. I don't know why, but I just haven't had the urge to put this movie back in the player. Not sure why, but with this new Blu-ray edition...

Pixar's "Cars 2" hits DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 1, and attentive Radiator Springs fans will notice a special bonus feature, "Air Mater." The new short in the "Mater's Tall Tales" direct-to-dvd franchise is the inaugural production from the creative team at Pixar Canada, the legendary animation studio's two-year-old outpost up north.
Unlike the expansive campus in Emeryville, California, the Vancouver-based Pixar studio is a boutique annex that will focus on projects involving the studio's most famous legacy characters. NextMovie was able to tour Pixar Canada and speak to various Pixar geniuses about what inspires them to continue making critically beloved blockbusters that all audiences -- kids, parents, child-free adults -- want to watch again and again.
If you don't get the new "Cars 2" DVD, you'll be able to see Pixar Canada's second short, "Small Fry," starring Buzz Lightyear, premiering before "The Muppets" on Nov. 23.

Can Pixar deliver again, or is Cars 2 the firm's first genuine disappointment? Ron has been finding out...
Cars 2 feels like an exercise in excess and an apology from Pixar to their Disney friends. “Dear Disney, sorry we made a half-silent movie about a robot, and we're very sorry we made a movie about an old man and a fat kid who fly in a house-balloon. I know you love toy sales, and those movies weren't exactly selling tons of dolls. So, to make it up for you, here's Cars 2. It's like Cars, but with even More toy potential!”
This time, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) has just won the Piston Cup again, and now he's ready to kick up his wheels, relax with girlfriend Sally (Bonnie Hunt) and spend his lazy days with his best pal Mater (Larry the Cable Guy).
Unfortunately, after a very-public calling-out from hotshot...

It's easy to make fun of Larry the Cable Guy because, let's face it, some of his standup material truly does suck. And the core of his fanbase seems less than. . .discerning. Still, the man has some of the best comic timing of anyone performing right now. He's also crafted his persona to the point that all you have to do is hear the setup and you are laughing before you hear the punchline.
You do know that it is a persona, right? Larry's real name is Daniel Whitney and he doesn't really talk like that. Andy Kaufman could have only dreamed of a stunt like this when he created Tony Clifton. I had the opportunity to speak to him about the character of Mater, what to expect in Cars 2 and whether or not he's ready to leave the cable industry. Here are the highlights of what went down.

Pixar has brought in story artist Dan Scanlon to direct the prequel to Monsters Inc. called Monsters University. This will be Scanlon's first feature film. He previously worked as a story artist on Cars and Toy Story 3 and also directed the Cars-related short film, Mater and the Ghostlight. The film will be produced by Kori Rae who was also a producer on Mater's Tall Tales and Up. It was previously believed that Pete Doctor would direct it, but that isn't the case any more.
Monsters University will be Pixar's fourteenth feature film, and follows "Mike and Sulley during their tenure at the University of Fear, where they start off as enemies and slowly become friends. It will effectively serve as a prequel to the events seen in Monsters, Inc." Billy Crystal and John Goodman will reprise their roles as Mike and Sully.

I contacted Disney to see if I could get any additional details on the announced Toy Story shorts that will be playing in front of Cars 2 on June 24 and The Muppets on November 23, but they couldn't give me any other than to say these will be the only two Pixar shorts this year and that more info and images are expected to be made available in March, but even that wasn't a sure thing.
Nevertheless, it is interesting to know the Toy Story franchise will live on, much in the way the Cars franchise never died after the first film was released in 2006. After Cars, Pixar created a series of shorts surrounding Mater, the dim-witted tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, which started with Mater and the Ghostlight in 2006 and continued through 2010 with "Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales".
The difference here is Pixar is giving the Toy Story gang a theatrical treatment,...
