- One of Mary's witnesses, an ex-mercenary who was supposed to testify against a former partner who killed 17 innocent people while assassinating a Mexican kidnapper, is trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building. Mary manages to reach his side and tries to keep him alive, in part by providing him with medical aid, and - because his face has been shown on television - by shielding him from other mercenaries who might target him while he is trapped. In the meantime, Brandi tries to apologize to Peter Alpert, the coordinator of the AA group whom she deceived by posing as Jinx.—aldanoli
- Mexico City, Five Months Ago
A man hooks up a shady-looking guy's cable then goes out to join his buddy in the van. He takes out a keypad and punches in some numbers. The entire floor of the building explodes. The guy in the van with him is upset that he used such a big charge and pulls a gun, but Harry says it was to send a message to kidnappers. Lewis Fowler isn't happy. He knocks out Harry, the guy who set the charge.
Lewis Fowler enters the program as Lewis Ford.
Present Day
Raph brings Mary breakfast in bed. He's excited she slept over. He made coffee and blueberry pancakes. Stan calls, telling her to turn on the TV. There's footage of Lewis Ford bringing people out of a collapsed building as a reporter says he's now trapped inside.
At the building, Stan tells Mary that the building still isn't stable and they don't know how bad Lewis is hurt. With his picture on the news the clock is already ticking on how long they have to move him. Marshall is worried about sniper fire. Mary puts on her hard hat and goes in.
Brandi calls Peter, the guy who led the AA meeting that she went to and lied at. She's been calling all week. She leaves him a message. Then she hangs up and calls him again.
Stan watches the scene outside trying to run facial recognition software on the crowd.
Al with the search and rescue team arrives, wondering why US Marshals are there. He's not happy to hear someone already went in.
Inside, Lewis lies pinned by giant slabs of concrete. He may or may not be impaled on a pipe. They're several stories up and giant pieces of building are everywhere with no ceiling, exposed to the world. Mary crab walks her way across the rubble with Al and the medic behind her. Al wants her to get out, but she says she's not going anywhere.
Outside, Marshall spies a TV reporter arriving, Janice Austen, a woman who blew a story about the vice president getting kickbacks. He sends her back behind the barricade.
The medic can't get close to Lewis so Mary moves some rubble for a better look. Lewis clearly has a pipe through his gut.
The medic walks Mary through helping Lewis as Stan and Marshall try to clear offices with sight lines to Lewis.
Brandi waits for Peter at the meeting. He tells her to drop it, that he's not interested. She wants to apologize. He tells her to consider herself forgiven. She gives up and walks out.
Lewis walks Mary through inserting his IV.
Stan, just off the phone with the US Attorney, asks Mary over walkie talkie if Lewis can give a dying declaration. She points out that Lewis can hear him and tells Stan he'll be fine. She puts in an earpiece.
Stan gets a call from the Mayor as Marshall checks nearby buildings. He sees people on the roof of a parking structure. Marshall sees one of them has some kind of scope. He takes off running for it. They fill Mary in and she remains calm. Their snipers can't take the shot until the threat is confirmed. Mary blocks Lewis with her body. He tells her it'd be stupid to get herself killed for a dead man. We see through the scope and hear a man try to will Mary to get out of the way so he can get his shot.
Marshall runs up behind them. It's Janice and her cameraman. She got a good look at a Marine Force Recon tattoo on Lewis' arm. She wants to know what US Marshals are doing at a construction accident.
Marshall shoos her away, telling her she might think this story is her ticket out of the dog house but it isn't and if she interferes again, he'll lock her up.
Al predicts it'll take seven to eight hours to get to Lewis. Night falls. The medic tells Mary to keep Lewis awake. He thinks the people after him will come soon. He tells her the men coming for him are the best in the world at what they do. She asks him about the private mercenary business and how he went from being a decorated soldier to that. He says he joined because protecting American citizens against foreign kidnappers seemed like a good idea.
Mary disconnects from Stan. She asks Lewis if he ever thinks about the people he killed and if there's some trick for dealing with it. He says he doesn't discuss it with people who haven't been through it. She tells him about being kidnapped a few weeks ago and the man she killed. She remembers the look after he'd been hit, like she was looking at a scared little boy. She can't get that face out of her head.
Lewis says every soldier who's been through that is haunted by the realization they've killed some mother's little boy. You can't do anything about it, it just becomes part of you.
Mary turns her radio back on when they hear movement. Stan tells her they've stabilized the floors enough to try to get to her.
Janice approaches Stan and Marshall, reading them what she's found out. She knows he's Lewis Fowler and is suspected in the death of a Mexican kidnapper and 17 innocent civilians. She has a picture of Mary. She wants the story.
Marshall starts to put her under arrest. Stan takes him aside. He points out Lewis' cover is already blown and suggests they give her the story to protect Mary's identity.
Peter wraps up a meeting and Brandi walks in. He rolls his eyes but lets her talk. She introduces herself and tells the group about the lie she told and why she told it. She says they were all really nice to her and she's sorry for coming there and lying to them. She chokes back tears and apologizes again, saying she thinks it's a great thing they have going on there. Peter watches her leave.
Mary watches as the nearby construction workers all clear out except one. Mary says she has a bad feeling about it as Marshall goes running inside. The floor explodes, Marshall stumbles out, coughing up dust, but OK. He says the blast took out the stairway, the only way in.
In the rubble Mary has her gun drawn as the dust clears. Lewis' old partner Harry has his gun on Mary and it standing two feet away. He puts down his weapon and says if his mission was to kill Lewis, he'd be dead by now.
Mary sits him down and turns on her walkie behind her back. Marshall and Stan hear Harry tell Mary it's about loyalty. He asks Lewis what happened. Lewis says what happened was that he planted a charge that killed 17 people. Harry says that eight hostages were released unharmed after they sent that message . Marshall, Stan and the reporter listen as the medic, monitoring his vitals, says that he's barely hanging on and Mary better do something.
Mary shifts her friendly tone and starts in on Lewis, saying that he turned on his partner and never had any loyalty in the first place. He knew what he was getting into when he signed up and it turns her stomach that she has to protect him.
Mary continues on Lewis as Stan and Marshall figure she's stalling for time and see Lewis' vitals go up as he gets worked up.
Harry picks up on what Mary's saying, talking about the 17 people who died to send a message. When he's done, Mary picks up her walkie talkie and asks if they got it all. Yep. Harry's caught.
The rescuers come for Lewis and carry him out.
Janice thanks Marshall and promises no hints of Mary in her story. As Mary takes Harry into custody he tells her he meant what he said, that your partner is the only thing that matters.
Mary goes to Raph's after a long day. Janice's report about Harry and Lewis plays on the TV. Raph asks if that's where she's been all this time. She says it was crowd control, clean up, "boring stuff." Janice's report says that Lewis died after the rescue.
