For True-crime watchers
fajarsantoso5 November 2021
If you love true-crime documentaries, this is a must watch. It's not a new concept so don't expect to be blown away with new things. It is just entertaining and gives a new spin on well-known murders that have been covered many times.

Typical true crime procedurals
jondallaslawyer4 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm writing this review because apparently in June 2021, Netflix released a different version of this series and it had problems. In the version which began playing in Nov. 2021, the problems have been repaired.

The series is a typical true crime procedural that lays out the facts of the crimes by interviewing law enforcement investigators who worked on the cases. The LE investigators travel to places where bodies were recovered or case events took place. At the end of an episode, the criminal is nabbed and justice is meted out.

The series is perhaps unusual because it deals with famous serial killers.

Pros and Cons

The episodes have good case selection but the back and forth format is no fun to follow. It has a GREAT narrator - which is no easy feat - but the CGI and acting are atrocious. 😂

Rehashing old very famous cases
clairelouise513 November 2021
Unfortunately it's nothing you haven't already seen all before, about high profile cases that have already been raked over again and again. The Green River Killer, Aileen Wuornos, etc. Might be interesting if you are a true crime newbie but I'm interested to explore the complexities of other, less known cases.

Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this series. First thing I noticed is that the description is not entirely correct. They must have made adjustments, since it's release. The episode titles don't match the titles on Netflix. And they are not combining more than one case in each episode. As an example. Episode 1 is The Green River Killer. And episode 2 is Eileen Wuornos. IMDB needs to update this shows episode descriptions.

More Proof

The Happy Face Killer case proves that DAs and Cops need to start facing jail time for convicting innocent people. No more "I wish we had gotten this right" crap!!

Some just don't learn from own mistakes

Podcast level narrators/ story telling

Even though the stories are mostly brutal but the way it unfolds diminished the violence. What's left is more of story telling and some emotional release.

If you are a detail seeker, this series won't satisfy you. But it works as a good foundation if you want to dig into the case.

The last episode "happy face killer" really bugs me. The DAs did not do their jobs well and were misled by a grandmother but later furious about her because (the DAs believed) the other death could have been stopped.

I mean, what the hell? This DA did not do his job well and still do not face the responsibility his owned.

The later-confessed killer did not appear in the first case. With or without being misled, the DA had zero chance finding the true killer.

The DA's job is to find the truth, no matter how deeply it is hidden. Clearly he thinks he did wonderfully but in fact he did not.

Wonder if he also put other innocent people behind the bar.

Finally

This was much needed. Finally, a documentary about known serial killers. I hope that they're going to keep going and make more seasons with more episodes.

They interleave two different cases. You have to take notes to keep them separated. Producers please don't do anymore like this. I have to look each case up on the internet to figure out what happened.

Cops are heroes
GomezAddams66611 February 2022
This true crime series shows us the real-life heroes of the world, men and women in blue catching all the scum that romas the street.

You can see how the sheer brutality of these cases takes a toll on these heroic Police Officers, but they persevere and catch these monsters.

We don't thank them enough for their sacrifice.

This idiot found a cash cow. The first episode of this series makes him out to be a hero, while really, we all thought he was an idiot.

The murders were treated as inconsequential by the police, and the taskforce a taxpayer-paid for joke.

It took a while for me to understand what this show was about. Law enforcement individuals in a few cities recalling what they had to go through to catch their serial killers. I liked it 'cause it was based on true stories. If you don't like shows like this one then i don't suggest you watching it. This is a good show.

Why? did you get a slow a motion camera ?
onze-kris4 November 2021
Getting older I am getting more picky of film techniques used.

I watched the second episode.

So there is a lot of slow motion , slow motion driving .. black and light , moving on maps (closeup and slow motion) and some old footage...

a lot of terrible music that should support the atmosphere... and storytelling of people walking in the building some 30 years later and having absolutely no business being there anymore.

Need I say more....

I am a curious person and I like to know what happened.... So what bothers me is that the mental state of the killer and the actual trial . Is that all what was needed....

and if I recall correctly, I can"t stand to watch it again... But i think at one point it said that two women were seen exiting the vehicle and one was bloody... It might have well been the convicted person. But that doesn't explain why the girlfriend at that time was there as well if that blood indicated that the murder took place recently as she hadn't time to clean herself.

So the deal struck by the police to not prosecute her... Well why ?

Anyway.... the woman needed help but we failed to give it to her.

And I don't know if the families that were involved have to be okay with this being aired...

anyway. I get it why those shows are made... and I have a hard time neglecting such shows myself. However I absolutely see no use in checking the other episodes out.

It is great material for overused techniques at film schools.

And if this what shot by second years and edited than I would say they understand that stuff.

There has to be a more creative way that is not as boring as looking slow motion closeup of feet walking in a hallway unrelated to the story or a slow moving shot on a map that doesn't tell you anything at all as well. As far as I can tell the map could be of an entirely different location as well. It tells nothing about scale...

too many details were left out to make it worth following. It is just some passtime tv. And of it's kind probably one of the worst topics to have.

Netflix garbage
scheduledgeoff7 November 2021
Another garbage documentary series that rewrites history by characterizing the totally incompetent Green River killer detectives as empathic and talented investigators. There are even multiple times when they are shown crying (probably encouraged), and while it may seem they are crying for the victims, they are actually crying over how stupid they are. Very simplistic interviews with a background of inane b-roll footage that has nothing really to do with the story.

not as expected

Warning: Spoilers
A mini series about how the detectives solved various crimes through the years.

The Green river episode wasnt all that interesting ive never been interested with this man. I more so wanted to learn about the victims

Alieen was a better episode, even tho you know the outcome it was still suspenseful. Shes always been an interesting person.

Episode 3 this detective was a trip. He was talking about how motherly or grandmotherly this woman was after she confessed to strangling another woman. Then he tried to spin it like maybe she was under someone else's control. White privilege will forever amaze me. You will never hear a detective talk like this about a black criminal. This episode has a nice twist. As soon as the twist came it was more exciting. Everything before that didnt grab my attention, and i cant tell you why.

Overall i thought the show was underwhelming and surprisingly short. I Already knew about the happy face killer and green river and those were never that interesting. Maybe that's why they milk the heck out of ted bundy.

Utter incompetence disguised as a tale heroism
v9043yve31 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Horrendous crimes! Officers who care SO MUCH! How come they're so bad at their jobs then?

The crimes presented here are truly sickening. How little the law cared about the victims is even more sickening (the people who died are almost exclusively referred to as "bodies").

The show's creators trying to present the people tasked with solving these crimes as heroes is... a whooole new level of sickening.

Framing the police as "the good guys trying to fight the system to get results" is downright insulting to the victims and survivors. The amount of evidence they neglected or didn't follow up on is mind boggling. Some of these cops have trouble stringing a sentence together (Netflix makes strategic cuts, bc if they go on for more than 2 sentences they sound like the cretins that they are, not all of them tho, to be fair). If it takes the police DECADES to find perps - same area, same mo, same type of victim, and you've literally had the suspect in custody... My pet parrot would do a better job at finding the guy.

Case after case the cops did a really, really bad job. If I was this bad at my job I'd get fired within a week. Naturally, Netflix, as always, carefully curates details about each case: enough to let them frame the story as one of true heroism, and not enough to make the viewer feel like their distrust in law enforcement is justified. The goal here is for you to have one simple takeway from this show: "cops good, crime bad". No critical thinking required.

Please stop glamorizing cops. Yes, they are human beings with emotions and families. But if they fail at their ONE JOB - decade after decade of trying to catch the perp, getting promoted in spite of zero results - they DO NOT deserve our praise, let alone a friggin' tv show.
