...*hasn't seen Fringe or XFiles!*
Since I'm of the opinion that there can't be too much sci fi series to watch, I always give a very generous opportunity for a new series to get its groove. Debris had an intriguing premise that could have projected it into a level of greatness.
Sadly, Debris is an epic fail. The sci fi plot was quickly shelved into the background, while the writers tried to make soap feelings and characters the driving force. Borrrrr-ing! The two main characters are bad actors, have no chemistry with each other, are extremely unlikeable, and the audience is left not even caring enough about them to remember their names!
I gave the season a fair chance, but it's quite unwatchable by the end of this episode. Because the premise is still intriguing, I suggest that they reboot this series; fire the writers, fire the actors, fire the directors, and start all over.
Until that happens, there is no redemption for Debris.
