- Jackie and her husband fear that their daughter may be suffering from anxiety, and Jackie confides her concerns with Dr. O'Hara. An elderly man who has chosen to treat his heart failure with chicken soup comes to the hospital for his treatment. Also Jackie's pharmacist boyfriend lets her know he's being replaced by an automated pill dispenser.—mibryant
- At home with her husband and kids. Jackie shuts the bathroom door and reaches for a pill she hid on top of the medicine cabinet. She knocks it into the sink then uses gum on the end of a tooth brush to try to get it. Her husband interrupts and the pill stays down the drain. He comes in to talk about how nervous their 10-year-old seems. Jackie tells him she'll be fine. He offers to stop by the hospital and take her to lunch. It's a bad day, she says, asking for a rain check. "It's been raining a lot lately," he says.
Walking to work she leaves a message for her pharmacist boyfriend Eddie. She catches herself saying she needs to see him and tries to change it to want.
Jackie tends to an elderly patient. Zoey comes in, showing off her new stethoscope, which Elenor promptly borrows to listen to the patient. She walks off with it. After she leaves, the patient tells Jackie he doesn't want an angioplasty or any other treatment. He doesn't want his wife to lose one minute of sleep over this.
Eddie peers in and Jackie ducks out. She tells him her back is killing her. He says hell take care of her in 20 minutes.
The paramedics bring in a woman who's freezing cold, but drenched in sweat. They're visiting from Ohio for their first anniversary. She's cramping like crazy.
Zoey bothers Jackie again and Jackie notices her stethoscope is missing. She tells her to get it back from Elenor.
Jackie meets Eddie in an exam room where, instead of pills, he gives her a back massage. She tells him his hands feel sad. He tells her he's being replaced by a machine. She rants for a while about how that's going to add lots of time to patient treatment and how irritating it's going to be to have to enter a code for every Motrin. He waits a beat and tells her he'll miss her, too.
Jackie drops in on Dr. Cooper. She wants him to tell the board to vote against the pharmacy machine, but he thinks machines are cool. He enjoys that she wants a favor and asks if this is because she has a little crush on Eddie. Dryly, she says yea, she has a huge crush on Eddie and they do it every day at noon.
Cut to a clock reading 12:01 and Eddie and Jackie going at it. He asks her to check the time, and she confirms they're doing fine, just don't get fancy.
Jackie checks on her elderly patient, who is getting treatment from his wife: chicken soup. Jackie tries again to tell him to meet with a cardiologist, but he has faith in his Jewish penicillin.
As she leaves, Mrs. Akalitus gives her the stink eye.
Jackie and Cooper examine a man with a huge bump on his forehead and slices on his testicles. He blames Roy, his cat. He says he was cleaning his tub nude and his cat went for his junk and he slipped and bumped his head.
Jackie finds the Ohio husband at the news stand and helps him pick out a magazine for his wife. Jackie and Mo Mo watch Cooper head for the elevator and she catches him checking the doctor out.
Mrs. A checks on the elderly patient and his wife, wondering what they're still doing there. Jackie tells her she told them they could wait there, but Mrs. A wants them out. Jackie asks her to be a nurse again for a minute and look at the man. She sees he's dying and agrees they can stay til the end of Jackie's shift.
Zoey tries to work up the nerve to get her stethoscope back from Dr. O'Hara. She practices what she's going to say as she walks over. Dr. O'Hara defuses her will by calling her Angela. Zoey says thanks and runs off.
Jackie and Elenor go to lunch and talk about the elderly couple. Then Elenor posits a hypothetical, asking her who survives between Eddie and her husband on the sinking Titanic. Jackie changes the subject by saying she's worried about her daughter Grace. Elenor tells her if she needs anything, anything at all, to just ask or she'll kill her, as friends do. Then Jackie checks that she does know she took Zoey's stethoscope this morning. Oh yes, and she's been having the most marvelous time watching her try to ask for it back. They enjoy a good laugh over that.
Jackie gets the lab results on the Ohio woman. She's not pregnant. She's withdrawing from opiates. Jackie asks her what she's taking. She got Vicodin when she had her wisdom teeth out a few months ago, and it's so easy to get online. Jackie tells her she's on a slippery slope. She asks Jackie not to tell her husband.
Jackie Googles something.
Then she stands over the elderly man with his wife as she shuts off his machines. The wife knew he was dying, she's at peace. Mrs. A comes in for the bed. The wife says something to her in Yiddish. Mrs. A says you're welcome but when Jackie asks the wife what it meant she says "Go s--- in the ocean."
Zoey approaches Dr. O'Hara in the hall, identifying herself as Angela. Dr. O'hara is wearing huge dark shades and sitting on a bench. Zoey realizes she's asleep. Then she slowly pulls the stethoscope off her and slinks away. Dr. O'Hara smiles.
At home, Jackie finds her daughter worrying that the Bubonic plague might happen again. Jackie offers her some chicken soup. Grace won't tear her eyes away from the TV. Jackie feeds her soup.
