I feel, in this day and age, that Star Trek is capable of being more than one thing. It's a franchise rather than a genre, so he animated kids series is as welcome and appropriate as the swearing and violence in "Discovery". It's still got to be good though, and throughout the first season and increasingly in this one, "Picard" just isn't.
Tallinn (Orla Brady) enters the mind of the stricken Picard (Patrick Stewart) and investigates the memory that seemingly has him trapped. She explores, both literally and through metaphorical imagery, a defining moment in young Jean-Luc's mind that he has repressed. Seven (Jeri Ryan) and Raffi (Michelle Hurd) discover the truth about what's happened to Jurati (Alison Pill) and track her across the city.
There was one aspect of this that I did like, and that was seeing James Callis swap classic space series for another one and appear here as the psychiatrist. That's about it.
What annoys me about this series in particular is that rather than exploring a story, it seems to prefer to start a thousand plot strands and then ignore them entirely. For example, this episode ignores the Renee Picard must go to space storyline, even the Brent Spiner tried to kill a man aspect of it, entirely. The Q storyline too is minimised until the last few moments. Instead we start a whole new storyline of Picard and young Guinan being arrested this time, we'll gloss over the fact they did this story a few episodes ago with Rios. In fact, glossing over bits of this story is required to get it to work. Why has Raffi seeming stopped caring about whatshisname being dead now, given that she was so angry about it yesterday? Why have these, seemingly deep seated, psychological problems from Picard's childhood never been explored or mentioned before in the hundreds of episodes and films we've been through with him. They substories should feel like minor diversions and work in service of the main plot, but I feel this feels more like a bunch of ideas thrown at a board and then pulled down in a random order.
I'll be impressed if they can pull the nose up on this season, though I hope they can.
