For creator and director J.J. Johnson, producing a children’s series is not just about entertaining kids but also about getting them excited about interacting with the world around them. It was with this in mind that he created Annebots, a science show that is one of Amazon’s original pilots.
J.J. is one of the partners of Sinking Ship, a production company based in Toronto, Canada. Formed in 2004, its credits include This is Daniel Cook, Are We There Yet?: World Adventure, and Dino Dan.
Annebots is about Anne, who learns about the world and science while hanging out in her junkyard lab with her best friend Nick and android helpers Hand, Eye and Pal.
We spoke with J.J. about what inspired Annebots, opportunities for interactivity, and the thrill of getting kids excited about science.
How did you come up with the concept for Annebots?

AmazonStudios is taking a more unusual approach by letting viewers decide what they want to keep watching. The company has kicked off its screening process this weekend by unveiling its inaugural slate of 14 pilots — eight comedies and six kids shows, all made available for free on AmazonInstant Video, LoveFilm UK and LoveFilm Germany. Viewers are being invited to watch the pilots and Amazon is welcoming feedback from its audience. According to Deadline, the company will evaluate feedback from an online panel recruited on Amazon preview as well as traditional offline focus groups to decide if they greenlight a series or not. The highest-profile series is Zombieland, but the two that look most interesting are Alpha House, starring John Goodman with cameos by Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert; and Onion News Empire. Amazon has not yet decided how many of the shows will make the cut, nor when they will premiere.

New is always better and this season's final new episode, "Challenge Accepted", proved that it is never too late for a season finale to become memorable.
First off though, was that the set from the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld that Lily bought the soup from? It looked pretty similar.
I didn't realize what was going on until Lily burst through the door and tried to stop Marshall from eating the soup. I was so thrilled for the news that I was sure would come that I didn't really mind that Lily's vomit sound actually resembled the T-Rex from Jurassic Park and not a velociraptor. Sorry for that Mosby moment. Who am I, Dino Dan?
As if Ranjit's return wasn't joyous enough, we were treated to Robin and Barney rehashing their relationship as only they could. Robin recalled how she motor boated a much heavier Barney. What an image. I...
