The first episode intrigued me well enough.

But this episode just had me going "what...the...frick..." and not in the good way.

After our poignant adventure starter we get a closer look at the world the story is going to inhabit. It's not half bad; it's a kind of semi-fantasy interplanetary thing. I can get behind that no problem and the giant lady thing is a cool point of intrigue.

The crux of the episode however will be seeing how a dynamic between the two leads develops. The male (I don't remember his name) is a guy who's going out into the wider world and interacting with non-machines for the first time so I respect that this is over-whelming for him. We can all relate with feeling like a stranger in an unfamiliar world but he rushes in with such gay abandon that he felt less and less like an audience surrogate and more like just a clown character.

I suppose I shouldn't need to always have a main character who I treat as the "me" of the story, it's sort of narcistic, but heads up.

Now for the girl. So far there's nothing really to her except that she's trying to get famous the same way most youths are trying to get famous ""Der content creator") but isn't very good at it. That's the only impression I have of her.

They clearly want to get a foundation of character back stories down as soon as possible so they can dash into the character driven series but it all feels rushes and trite. This episode makes the same error that the first episode of Trese made: to show us flashbacks to childhood too quickly. I want to get to know the person NOW before I see who they WERE. Yes I know we are moulded (though not defined) by our past but I need time to get a baring on these new characters just like how I don't want to have the appetiser AND the main course forced into my mouth.

These flashbacks feel like deleted scenes from a feature length movie; it is jarring to just have them thrown at me especially since all we see should have been revealed much later in the show. The tell a lot more than they show and what they show is bonkers.

It's not too much more than standard cartoon science fiction fare I suppose but at a certain point (you'll know it when you see it) my brain just switched off and I thought "just another mange cartoon". I'm not looking for something high-brow, I literally added this to my watchlist because of oppai in the promotional stills but this show doesn't even suggest that they're going to subvert my expectations except by being ludicrous.

Happy is also a bland character. He and the girl have nothing to them except they have each other and are looking for adventure. Not even that: they are creating content.

I suppose the third episode deserves a third chance but this just makes me want to give High Rise invasion another go.

German dub was super though.
