Empathetic people beware, will have you crying in the first episode but that's a good thing
kyle_mccollum6 July 2021
Binged the entirety of this show within 90 minutes with my girlfriend and was such a great heavily entertaining learning experience. I'm 23 and I feel like this is the talk show that open minded people need to watch. I was unaware of David Choe and had only heard rumors until Tigerbelly's newest episode but after that I knew I had to watch this show and it was well worth it. Will be recommending to many friends and hope you do the same!

"Anh's Brush with Fame" it is not

Interesting dive in the universe of an eccentric artist & some of his friends/accointances etc... No real format, but thx to gr8 editing it flows seamlessly, & i must say , dude can art!

8/10 for having to bear all that hipster tortured artist vibe i'm allergic to.

Refreshing nonetheless.

The Talk Show that Isn't
thejessehagerman10 July 2021
Choe's Show is full of emotion and depth.. he gets intimate, dark, therapeutic, and has fun with his artistic guests. It's quite intriguing and loose I just would have preferred more focus on the portraits he created and what they represented. But as far as a talk show he really pushes barriers and makes it an empathetic worthwhile to witness.

A Talk Show That Goes Way Beyond Talk
dwknuj27 June 2021
I love talk shows. That's what drew me to "The Choe Show." But Dave Choe's show goes w-a-a-a-a-a-y past the limits of two people having a chat. These are therapy sessions. We get a unique understanding of both the guests and the host. These four episodes are four works of art.

The typical talk show host works with a lot of safeguards. The guest has obviously been carefully pre-screened by someone on the staff (you'll see the host glance at their notes and suddenly ask, out of no where, "So, tell us about what happened to you in the Grand Tetons."). Dave Choe is working without a net. No protections. No safeguards.

As an artists he'll actually create art with his guests. Bits of prior episodes will bleed into later ones. The interviews are done in his childhood home, now turned into a studio thick with art.

There's a part of all of us that will stand apart and critically appraise whatever we see. It will ask "Is this good?" "Do I like it?" "How should I classify this?" Fire a tranquilizing dart into that judgmental self. Just throw yourself into "The Choe Show." Watch it without nets, without protections, without safeguards.

Heal Your Heart, Make Some Art
aaronjlemma3 July 2021
It's hard to capture in words what David Choe brings to light through his art. That's what this show is-a work of art. More than conversation, story, saga, or portrait making, The Choe Show touches the deepest parts of our collective human experience. We are all children and adults at the same time, trying to make sense of this complex and confusing world. To have this show to accompany us, whether we're ready for the healing or not, is a blessing. David, thank you for being you and helping us heal.

Not what you would expect from an "Art Show"
fuentes886 July 2021
If you haven't heard about or read about the original Choe Show in Koreatown, I highly recommend googling. David truly is an art wizard Gandalf type of magical creature who has blessed our generation with so much incredible art, whether you would like to admit it or not. Choe Show feels like seeing Nickelodeon for the first time in the 90's heyday or hearing smells like teen spirit when I was 13. So many cool edits & visuals unlike anything I've ever seen in a Hulu show, or anywhere else on tc or the internet. It's exciting to see something so authentically self-expressed on television. It's not therapy but it's therapeutic. The guest interviews are open and honest, which is a refreshing change of pace from the same old interview/plug your project treadmill.

Magic, color, layers - healing
molly75-237-6295436 July 2021
There are thoughtful, soulful interviews and deep dives and after, rushing up to the surface to reveal the result in paint. Beautiful art done by David Choe. We learn so much through him, around him. His people, his past, his space. We need more seasons as this is just the beginning of a journey for us all.

Artistic Therapy
chrishredwards6 July 2021
This show can't be categorized or described like normal TV shows. It draws from talk shows, comedy shows, documentaries, improv, role play, performance art, and interactive therapy. David Choe goes beyond the boundaries you might even expect from him, getting people to laugh, cry and think deeply about themselves, their trauma and their unique paradigm. To top it off, the whole time he is talking with these people he is creating beautiful art. The portraits get hardly any attention in the show but they really embody the conversation and experiences described.

From the guests, to the art, to the editing, this is a show that should not be missed. It might not be for everyone but I think most people will find this show informative and even healing.

This is not Television
orock-260526 July 2021
These are big words but it's a miracle this show is on Tv. And it's not an accident.

David Choe created a true piece of reathing art from his vulnerable and deep place.

His paintings are fearless and his trauma is here. It brought up my pain. The guests are willing to go deep with him. Their portraits go beyond.

The show contains a lot of truth which is rare in any Tal shoe from any time. The show is past and present.

Choe helps us find a new way of being in his humanness and willingness to grow and pain t and connect.

4 episodes was not enough, I watched them all in one night and then had to watch it again the next day. Please let David release everything! C'mon Disney, I know you got the money.

How beautiful this world could be..
katieohwow10 July 2021
Forget what you think you know. Unlike anything you've ever seen, David Choe has a show that breaks down any manmade boundaries of how we connect with one another and how we express our feelings. While pushing himself to create these portraits of his guests, David Choe inadvertently inspires each of his guests to open up, connect and understand themselves in a deeper, truer way than I've ever witnessed before. The Choe Show is genuine, it's raw, and it is guaranteed to make you feel feelings. I was going to say "it's not going to be your mother's new favorite show" but it can be! Go watch it with your parents, my mom loves it.

"How beautiful this world could be, if we could all embrace our feelings genuinely" -says my mom, about The Choe Show.

in 1 word: Amazing!
bwiddup11 July 2021
I could try to explain the Choe show with words but they may not be sufficient. Like all great works of art it must be experienced. Go watch it, then tell a friend to tell a friend to tell a stranger about the Choe show!

Even though it defies explanation - in a sentence I'd say, It's a roller-coaster of art from the heart right from the start.

The other reviewers have said it well, it really is a special, one of a kind show. Total limitless creative freedom is the only way a show like this could've ever been made.

The physical art in the form of the paintings of the guests in the show are incredible. The whole show is a work of art and the paintings are just one part of the paint - on a masterpiece canvas on the screen of our hearts and minds.

I'm excited for a season 2! It's been making me think and genuinely reflect on creating and entering season 2 of my own life and the changes I can make myself which I believe goes to show how brilliant this show and artist is.

Please bring new seasons FX and Hulu or whoever else makes those decisions - The fans demand it!

  • Respectfully, thanks!

P. S if anyone from FX Networks happens to read my review - respect for being the fearless home of the Choe show, it's amazing!

Amazing, super creative and inspirational
chloejsilver26 July 2021
David Choe is a once-in-a-lifetime type of person, interviewing other interesting folks about their past trauma, heartache and woes, mixed in with mixed media art of all kinds, role playing, extreme weirdness, and somehow it all feels extremely personable like he could be describing your life.

Definitely worth a watch, I need more!!

Check Your Head
turningmostly9 July 2021
From his podcasts to social media.

Choe has taken his manic approach to graphical art, in all variations...and transferred it to these all encompassing jutting forms of involved pieces. From podcasts thats gone bad, to saga after saga each asking wtf are we doing with our lives? What is real? Have we gone too far? Or even close to being far enough? Are we saving people? Can we save ourselves? Can we find beauty in the S that we feel...breaks us? Are we ok? Does it matter?

Can it matter?

The Choe Show...is the next step into these journeys into those questions and attempts at figuring anything out. It may not be us asking the questions of our selves. But David asking and presenting these questions, and stories in the most compelling way yet.

I wont break down every episode.

That defeats the purpose of watching it unfold.

Ive followed his work for a while.

Since i was jumping around the midwest and east coast. What got me, was the wind crying Mary...and streetlights turning blue. I was in.

In the way i approach my own art, and experiments in expression. There was something there that reflected the chaos im myself, that i was ill equipped to express. And a bit afraid to.

Seeing his show...take it one step further into the self examination and the resulting paintings. The manic Tarantino-ing of the narratives. The questions asked. The perspectives presented, and watching the meanings twist and grow with every edit.

With the tumultuous world we are in.

And the seeming attack on flaws and our personal humanity. Our personal velocity.

This show, shows us "hey...we are flawed. We are even broken. Its ok. We have every right to unfurl any difficulty and pain we have, and examine it and take it for all its worth. Or accept it. But try harder. YOU are on the other side as well. But take the chance. Be uncomfortable. Be afraid. Keep going."

We need this show and more things like it.

Experimental talk show with many layers
malachijung28 July 2021
"We are a reflection of one another". That comes to mind while watching the Choe Show. Choe's extremely personal interviews, regarding a lot of taboo topics, are accompanied with a barrage of art and footage from Choe's many years as an artist. Conveying what's in his mind as he's interprets what the interviewee is saying. A show that seems like a painstaking task to produce. Hats go off not only to Choe, but everyone behind the scenes. I've hardly even scratched the surface, but it's something you'll have to watch and feel for yourself. Highly suggest it to anyone interested in art and exploring the hardships of life with an open heart.

Relatable, honest, raw, hauntingly beautiful. A must experience.
paran_b7 July 2021
The Choe Show is what the core of any therapy should be. The show highlights topics that nobody talks about, but everyone should talk about. It brings out the deepest pain and secret from the host, the guests, and the viewers. Then, it heals and gives them a whole new perspective.
