Mood-booster, simply great and hilarious
mromoy30 October 2021
This is a very wholesome - heartwarming franchise, with simple romance slash everyday things (workplace, daily life) that almost anyone can relate, and hilarious.

If you're someone who already read the original webtoon, you wouldn't be disappointed! The cast was spot on, the animation is top-notch, great production. And most importantly, it follows the webtoon plot pretty well (though you can't expect every single little thing to be the same from an adaptation). Overall this exceeded my expectations, i'm very happy to see how it turns out. Cannot wait for season 2!

Season 1 Great, Season 2 With Missteps
aggiemanalac26 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed both seasons, but for some reason season 2 was not as consistent as season 1. In fact, it was a bit of a mess. It tried to do much more but failed. I found myself skipping whole chunks of minutes of play every so often.

The male leads in both seasons were wonderful. Ahn Bo Hyun as the dorky but sincere boyfriend Woong who wanted only the best for Yumi was so loveable that I could not help but root for him even in season 2. My heart broke to pieces when he decided to break up from Yumi (in season 1) because he felt inadequate for her. Park Jinyoung as Babi, was equally charming as the impossibly ideal next boyfriend. Of course, Kim Go-eun is Kim Go-eun. She was equally wonderful in season 2. But it must be said that these 3 actors barely managed to pull off a weak script for season 2.

The writer went overboard with the cells in Season 2. Season 1's cells were all about emotions: love, anger etc. Fashion and a few others were stray non-emotion cells but that was ok, because there were only a few of them. The premise set in season 1 was clear, crisp, and tight. Emotions and reason dictate our decisions and actions.

In season 2, there was an abundance of cells that did not make sense at all because they had no connection with how a person decides on her actions (there were even "feet" cells!). Then there was a "Writer" cell who eventually took top priority over the Love cell. Again, "Writer" isn't an emotion. It is a person. So you now have a person within a person. After breaking up and losing Love, Yumi needed to have another priority. If she decided to focus on writing, then I'd think a "Determination" cell (not quite an emotion, but close to it) would have been more appropriate, rather than a "Writer" cell.

The introduction of cells of other characters of the story such as that of Editor-in-Chief's ruined things. What on earth was that for? And instead of them looking like "cells", they were made to look like a bunch of Marvel comics characters.

The writer lost the essence behind the cells and they all became one messy group of characters. And they all tended to overpower/overwhelm the real life characters.

Too bad they messed around with the success of the cell characters of Season 1. They should have kept them the way they were: sincere and heartfelt emotions.

Then there is the matter of the break-ups and the irrational, shallow reasons behind them. First, Yumi was so insecure that she could not trust Babi enough. He was honest by admitting, upon her quizzing, that yes, he felt that spark of attraction towards his intern. But he did not act on it. In fact, he did his best to avoid it. Emotions can be unexpected and cannot be avoided when they spring on you out of nowhere. But how you react and what you do with them are what matter. And Babi chose to stay true and loyal to Yumi. And neither did he say a word when Yumi felt she needed to see Woong when he called, while she and Babi were preparing dinner on Christmas Eve. She could have simply said she can't.

Then next time around, Yumi decides that she feels nothing when she saw Babi's intern's name flashing on his phone, calling Babi while he was out buying beer. And she concludes that she does not love him. This, after Babi took care of her the night before because she was ill, and she reciprocated with heartfelt gratitude. Huh? It was as if the writer needed a reason for them to break up and could not find anything deeper than "Oh, I wasn't bothered that Ms. Intern called my boyfriend so I conclude that I do not love him. I will now break up with him."

In many ways I think the script's writer became lazy or was pressured to complete season 2.

There are positives, though:
  • Our 3 leads. They carried everything, definitely. Kim Go-eun was clearly a star here.

  • Great soundtrack.

  • Lighting and cinematography - the choice of light, sometimes hazy hues was in keeping with Yumi's often cheerful disposition.

  • Supporting characters. Control Z eventually grew on me. The one character that did nothing for me was Editor in Chief. Ruby, I learned to love despite her annoying aegyo in season 1. But by season 2, I realize she wasn't a bad person, and I got used to her aegyo.

  • Lots and lots of sparks of humor in the cell communities. Yes, I did laugh out loud on many occasions, even in season 2.

  • Season 2 ending. Closed, but not quite. Clear signs that Yumi will be meeting boyfriend number 3.

A season 3 perhaps? I hope not. They should quit while they are still slightly ahead.

Missteps notwithstanding, Season 2 is still worth the watch if only for our 3 endearing characters.

Somehow, people don't seem to understand this series? The show is a breakdown of human emotion and the process of falling in and out of love. I felt I could relate to the characters through the entire show. Waiting for season 2!

MASTERPIECE KIND OF A NEW DYNAMIC DRAMA, PRODUCTION.
ladybee-7851221 September 2021
Surprisingly this live action + animation drama blended so so so well. Casts are so perfect. Kim Go Eun really suit the main lead. She conveys all of those emotions perfectly as we can feel what she felt from mixed kind of emotions. The other cast also performing their role really well. A lot of lessons to be learnt too... Love yourself. Kind of healing drama for me. The cells are really cute. What a great production. Kudoss to all the team I enjoyed it a lotttt. Re-watched it several times!.

STRESS RELIEVER
daddysgurlako19 September 2021
I don't expect that much from this drama actually since I know how difficult it is to produce an animation drama BUT SHET! When I watched the first 2 episodes, my phone is already full of Yumi, Ugi, Woong and the cells' cuteness. Character's acting wise especially Kim Go-eun, she was able to portray the role of Yumi. Gosh she was able to switch her emotions in a matter of second. And Ugi gosh he's so cute. I mean, if I were Yumi, I'll fall for him, too 😭 And Ruby is annoyingly cute. She's irritating, noisy but I love that she's transparent and easy to read. And Woong HAHAHHAA gosh seems like he came out of Webtoon. He's so cute and his lame jokes. I love how Ahn Bo-hyun portray Woong's character.

AND THE ANIMATION, DAEBAK! 😭 I can't say anything because it's soooo perfect. And the voice actors behind the cells are all so great.

I can't wait to watch the next episodes. I love this drama already. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it since I'm not a fan of animation but I guess, Yumi's Cells is an exemption.

YUMI, HWAITING! *insert cells' voice*

One of the best productions from S.Korea
kudzikay19 September 2021
Skeptical on how this proction would come out. Its undoubtedly an excellent production ever, considering it is a first of its kind from S. Korea. Best casting, directing, the cells very well synchronised, etc. Enjoyable, funny and will definitely take you on an emotional roller coaster. Brilliant acting. Kim Go Eun's acting is on another level. A magian actor indeed. All the best Yumi Cells!

Perfection!
singakd26 September 2021
Kim GoEun is perfect for Yumi! Cheese in the trap is classic example she adapted super well to the webtoon earlier. I read Yumi cells and it's by the book which is quite refreshing they didn't meddle with the storyline. I was skeptical at first how cells would translate in animation but to my surprise they are super cute, relatable and fun. It's such a smart concept and no wonder everyone loved webtoon. Its an absolute no nonsense show which is super refreshing in KDrama. They have my total admiration for doing such a phenomenal job. Looking forward for more!

Sooo underrated right now, this is a MUST SEE. I'll be honest I wasn't really feeling it at first, but it's actually adorable. Give it 2 episodes and you will be hooked. So cute and insightful.

I was curious to see what was going to happen when the 2 main characters would meet. It happened pretty fast and I started to get bored after that. I'm personally not a fan of day-to-day life shows like this one. And the cells moments when they're explaining all the feelings these two have, can be boring after a few episodes. I couldn't finish it.

My Critic Cell says "a hit and a miss - mostly a miss though"
prayagsuthar1 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished reading the entire 511-episode Webtoon a couple of days ago, and figured I'd check out the show. 25 minutes into Episode 1, I'm quite a bit disappointed.

The show takes the details of the first handful of episodes and rearranges the events, which dilutes their impact. The Cells' 3D models look good, but the animation is a hit-and-a-miss, sometimes looking polished (like the dive into the world of Yumi's cell village), and sometimes just looking robotic and tacky (like when they beat up Detective Cell). On the note of beating up Detective Cell, the Cells are much less crazy than they are in the Webtoon, which also makes them much more boring. For example, the White Blood Cell tasked with recovering Love Cell from a coma doesn't have chains around his legs and isn't pissed off - though that sounds like a good thing, it just crumples up and tosses a comedic scene from the Webtoon where Rational Cell asks him if anything can be done to save her, but then flips around and forces him to do it anyway even though he says he can't, whilst curse words are tossed in the exchange.

The acting feels dry, and the action is a bit slow; I'm especially disappointed for the acting and writing for the titular Yumi Kim, which turns her into a ditzy character who seems to just wander around and do silly things, which didn't feel so good to watch. Does she really need to slam her head on her desk for us to understand she's upset? Does she need to stand dumbly staring at a wall from the realization that she missed an opportunity to be with Wook? Even the very beginning scene - all she does is say "what was that" twice and then ruffle her hair?? Why???

The show also just makes everything melodramatic at the expense of the original tone of the comic, and to no advantage - I'd say two lyrical background songs in 25 minutes is two too many, and a lot of mundane scenes like Yumi fighting Hunger Cell to do calculations just drag on more than they need to. And the scene depicting Love Cell falling into a coma during the Great Flood just looked so flimsy and overdramatized, changing the scene from Love Cell hitting her head to Rational Cell desperately screaming her name and thinking she'd died - again, it ruins the original tone of the Webtoon! Also, it feels like emotional emphasis is misplaced left and right - the scene depicting Yumi doing office work has more emotional music than the scene where Detective Cell concludes that Wook and Yumi could be together, and it just feels wrong.

Overall, it was just cringey to watch, and doesn't live up to the original Webtoon. I'd rather just Daily Pass and reread the comic.

Disappointing Season 1 ending
aditya0413 March 2022
Yumi's Cells is the first show whose ending disturbed me so much that I couldn't sleep the whole night. I won't reveal any spoilers, but after season 1 disaster ending, I did read the entire webtoon plot and can say it is way more disappointing. I have finally decided not to watch any more seasons.

PS: I rarely write any reviews, so you can guess how disturbed I am. Just to stretch the storyline for another season or two, they forcibly ruined the main thing that this story had to offer.

Super funny and cute
potatobee8 October 2021
Yumi's Cells has completely exceeded my initial expectations. It's funny and cute, but its realistic story also brings a roller coaster of emotions to the stand. Every episode is packed with content, so anyone who likes a fast-paced drama will certainly like this one. As expected, Kim Go Eun never disappoints.

The best series of 2021!
cindymhar16 October 2021
Yumi's Cells is a refreshing, heart-melting, relatable, and healing Korean drama of 2021. I never expected to be hooked on the story, but when I progressed in watching and waiting all night for every episode, I was surprised by the magic it gave me. And I decided to try to read the webtoon and buy another episode because it was so addicting. And all I can say is that the series is very in sync with the original webtoon, which I really love. I can definitely say that this is the best webtoon to drama adaptation in the history of K-Drama. The acting of the cast is superb, the directing and writing of the script are very creative and on-point, and the editing of the cells is of high quality. This drama is the definition of perfection. Saranghae Yumi and Go Eun. Rooting for the best girl to get the awards and nominations for Yumi's Cells. To all the casts and crews of this series, you all did a great job. I can't wait to watch more. Thank you for showing and letting us join Yumi's journey!

Smart, realistic, and incredibly funny
utopiara20 May 2022
I did not expect this drama to become one of my favorites. I started it without really knowing what it's about and thought it'd just be one of those cliché romance dramas, but it was so much better. The concept of having those "cells" convey what happens in your head in different situations is so smart, it's kind of like "Inside Out" the movie, but executed so much better and funnier, there were also so many more feelings and situations discussed, and all the cells are hilarious and relatable . A lot of people have a problem with the characters/ conflict in the relationship, but I think it's very realistic, although the characters make you mad for not expressing their feelings better and for causing misunderstandings. Anyhow, I enjoyed this drama so much. The romance is so cute and the cast is well chosen, and the acting is very good! I'm looking forward to the second season of this. The director is so smart and I hope the drama won't be ruined with the upcoming season.

It's Just Okay
minad879 January 2022
I wanted to give this one a go particularly because of Jinyoung and I'm glad I did for his character, he acted it out so well!

The actual romance of the show was a bit irritating, I think that Yumi was a bit of an annoyance and Wung wasn't too great himself. Don't get me wrong here, it shows how our minds work for sure- I loved the cells, they were the best part of the whole show! It's just that the reasons for getting angry or annoyed, the way they have conversations and the result of their relationship- I just didn't enjoy it.

I would say watch this if you have nothing else to watch. The acting was great and the casting is awesome.

MUST WATCH
fangirlingjoan20 October 2021
This drama is a masterpiece. The way the actors and the animated cells are so well assimilated that as a viewer you will not find it awkward, is simply perfection! Also, Kim Go Eun and Ahn Bo Hyun are so well cast for their roles. Ggone with her trademark real life acting and Bo Hyun with his very masculine screen presence will take the viewers to a new level of giddy. Viewers must watch the very emotional confrontation between Yumi and Woong, Kim Go Eun and Bo Hyun delivered a stellar performance in this scene.

Another worth mentioning are the outstanding work of Locus Production for the animated cells. Their artwork is flawless, each cell is so well designed. The voice actors bringing the cells to life also did a good job!

Over all, this drama is worth your time and your VIP subscription to VIKI, iqiyi or TVING.

Watch it and enjoy the journey of Kim Yumi and her cells.

New approach but may get disappointed with story line
sukanyasarkar-6907412 October 2021
The animation of the thinking of how a girl thinks about the whole process from getting out of a relationship and getting into another one is great. The cells name and representation of the cells in yumi's brain are great. I however doubt that the ending of the story will not stick to the one that is in webtoon.... It is tiring to see female lead to be able to shuffle into only two main male leads .... Getting a third lead as it is webtoon makes the series more reliable and close to reality .... Overall its a nice watch.... Found the episodes in mid a bit lenghthy and boring. ....but looking forward when the second male lead is introduced... And damn he is cute .....

Tries to explain thoughts too much which makes it draggy and boring
11ovz116 February 2022
Loved Kim Goeun in "Goblin" so, I wanted to give Yumi's cells a try. The lead actor, I have seen in "Her Private Life" and in "My Name", is quite capable as well.

So, the cast is absolutely fine.

But, those cells. Gosh! They tried to do an "Inside Out" kdrama version and ruined it by overly explaining everything? I mean we clearly see the emotions from Go Eun, but having to see every single detail from cells point of view is just too unnecessary.

So, I think the issue is with the script... They have not found the right balance between the two.

I agree with the ending and I already see the setup for Season 2. So, here's hoping Season 2 won't be such a drag.

Season 1 was exhausting and I couldn't completely finish it.

I didn't expect to love this kdrama that much !
bougiadaa27 April 2022
Well I was so curious to watch this drama as it is something different At first I thought that cells would be irritated but they are actually very funny and interested!( sometimes I catch myself thinking of them when I am into troubles lol )

I really liked the chemistry between yumi and woong , they was so perfect together that I feel bad for their break up but it was so smoothly developed that I was not blame anyone for this end.

Also I was really angry when babi talked to yumi and persuade her but after a couple of episodes I didn't have any problem with it :)

There are lots of really funny moments that I burst into laughing for hours and the ost is so catchy and suits so much! I liked every single cell and character!

Also I really enjoyed season 2 as well!

Everything is so well written and this kdrama is just so normal without over romantic and supernatural scenes that can happen only in kdramas .

At the end I couldn't choose which one team I should ship TEAM BABI OR TEAM WOONG , but everything is just so perfect that I didn't have any problem with the real end ;)

Highly recommended to everyone!!!!!!!!! You won't regret it.

This exceeded my expectations
maisie3326 June 2022
A webtoon reader here. I was a bit sceptical about this production as the webtoon was so good and this was going to be the first-ever Korean live action + animation to be made. But wow. This truly exceede my expectations.

As a webtoon reader, I felt so satisfied with this adaptation. It's so faithful to the original source, they added a bit filler but it didn't ruin the essence of the story.

Yumi's Cells is a quiet simple story about an office worker, Yumi, and her feelings. It doesn't have such a complicated premise. And it's amazing how the production team and the actors turned it into an amazing series.

Kim Go-Eun's acting was impeccable. The way she portrayed many different emotions and moods in such a short period was top-notch. The cells were cute and the animation didn't disturb the live action. It was a very good combination. It's a must watch, especially for Korean drama enjoyers.
