Exclusive: Terence Winter, the writer-producer known for his work on Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos and more, will team with Vincent Piazza, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Phiphen to develop Midge, a tragicomic feature based on an absurd but true, as-yet-untold story.
At the center of it is Thomas Midgley, Jr., the man who in the first half of the 20th century invented two of the most toxic and disastrous chemicals humankind has ever known — leaded gasoline and Freon —without having even been a chemist.
In a statement on the project, Winter told Deadline that “the only thing crazier than this story is that it hasn’t already been told.”
He’s teaming with Piazza to pen the script and both will exec produce, along with automotive journalist Jamie Lincoln Kitman, who also serves as a research consultant on the project. Phiphen’s founder Molly Conners will produce alongside Academy Award nominee Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club). Director meetings are underway.
Winter is best known for creating the acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire, as well as for producing and scripting dozens of episodes of The Sopranos, for which he earned three Emmy Awards. In his 25-plus years in television, he’s also won three PGA awards and four from the WGA. Also the creator of HBO’s Vinyl, he’s otherwise best known for scripting Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. More recently, he co-wrote Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love, which is out in theaters now.
Piazza is best known for his work on the acting front, having appeared in everything from Boardwalk Empire and Clint Eastwood’s Jersey Boys to the Sylvester Stallone starrer Tulsa King and IFC thriller Centigrade.
Most recently, Appian Way produced the DiCaprio starrer Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by Scorsese, which is up this year for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Phiphen’s recent projects include the comedic thriller Coup! starring Peter Sarsgaard, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and will be released by Greenwich Entertainment, and the Nicolas Cage Western Butcher’s Crossing.
Winter is repped by CAA, Lbi Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Piazza by Gersh, Untitled Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

Many stories have been told about Westward expansion, but few have focused on the impact and consequences. John Williams’ 1960 novel “Butcher’s Crossing” follows William Andrews, a Harvard student who leaves his life behind to join a buffalo-hunting expedition, facing many harsh realities on his journey.
Producer Molly Conners sat down with Variety for the film’s release (now available to buy and rent on Blu-Ray and DVD) to discuss director Gabe Polsky’s journey adapting the story, financing the film, casting its star Nicolas Cage and working with the Blackfeet Nation to tell the story about the destruction of the buffalo population in 19th century America.
There’s a surge of interest in the Western genre thanks to shows like “Yellowstone” and “1883,” was it always going to be a feature film?

Kansas, 1874. In a letter to his father, Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger) details his decision to leave Harvard and travel west, searching for a purpose while exploring the country. His idealistic desire to experience a hunt leads Andrews to join experienced buffalo hunter Miller (Nicolas Cage), who promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Little do they realise that the unfolding journey will risk their lives and their sanity.
Amidst announcements about this adaptation of John Edward Williams’ 1960 novel, the most attention regarding this film occurred during an actor roundtable, where Cage mentioned a horse named Rain Man that he believed wanted to kill him. Such a fun story feels different from co-writer/director Gabe Polsky’s feature about man’s all-consuming nature and the destructive aftermath left behind.

The Flash was… well, it was something, but the majority of fan discourse has been caught up in the various CG cameos found in the finale, which included Nicolas Cage as Superman.
As Nicolas Cage was once slated to star as Superman in a movie directed by Tim Burton, the cameo served as a glimpse of what could have been. But the actor told Yahoo Entertainment that most of his appearance in The Flash wasn’t at all what he had shot on set. “When I went to the picture, it was me fighting a giant spider. I did not do that. That was not what I did,” Cage explained. “I don’t think it was [created by] AI. I know Tim [Burton] is upset about AI, as I am. It was CGI, Ok, so that they could de-age me, and I’m fighting a spider. I didn’t do any of that,...

Cage leads a strong cast into the wilderness in an adaptation of John Williams’ punishing novel that cannot quite convey the full horror of its events
John Williams’s punishing 1960 western novel Butcher’s Crossing was described by Bret Easton Ellis as “a precursor to what Cormac McCarthy would do with the genre”. It follows Will Andrews, a dreamy 23-year-old Harvard dropout, as he tags along with Miller, a buffalo hunter targeting hidden valleys in the Colorado territory in the late 19th century. Will hopes to learn “more about this country”; what he gets, as the four-man crew shoots and hacks its way through dwindling herds in ever more treacherous conditions, is a lesson in remorseless brutality. Any screen version would need to find a cinematic equivalent for the prose’s tensile strength, and for what critic Leo Robson calls the “regime of methodical close description” from which Williams offers no respite.

It’s been a bit more than a year since “Butcher’s Crossing” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, but the timing of its theatrical release could hardly be more propitious. Director Gabe Polsky’s grimly fatalistic Western has finally arrived at the megaplexes just days after the PBS airing of “The American Buffalo,” Ken Burns’ fascinating (and often infuriating) documentary about how bison were very nearly hunted into extinction in this country before an unlikely group of preservations saved the shaggy beasts. As Burns emphasizes in his two-part film, and Polsky’s drama duly notes during its end credits, an estimated 60 million bison roamed the American West as late as 1860. Two decades later, however, the bison population plunged to less than 300.

Butcher’s Crossing was reviewed at TIFF 2022.
Plot: A young man (Fred Hechinger) forsakes his wealth and privilege to explore the American west. He’s talked into bankrolling a Buffalo hunting expedition by Miller (Nicolas Cage), who’s become obsessed with his all-consuming trade. Soon, the two are on an endless expedition threatening their lives and sanity.
Review: As a lifelong Nicolas Cage fan, it’s tremendously rewarding to see him again respected as perhaps the most iconoclastic actor of our era. While I’d argue there are bigger stars out there, there are few on-screen personalities to match Cage, and while he was stuck in an endless loop of Dtv movies for too long, he’s since re-emerged and regained his reputation as a master of his craft. It helps that even in his worst movies, Cage never phoned it in, which is perhaps why he’s been able to...

Updated with latest additions: SAG-AFTRA, which launched a strike against Hollywood studios on July 14, launched its interim agreements program that allows independent productions with no direct ties to members of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to continue filming.
The guild has been adding to the list of projects granting agreements since soon after it went on strike against the AMPTP after failing to agree on a new film and TV contract. Under the terms, members “may work on these productions without being in violation of the strike order,” per the guild.
On July 27, SAG-AFTRA began granting casting-specific agreements that allow its members to “audition and/or engage in negotiations regarding casting for these productions, but may not yet travel, rehearse, or otherwise begin rendering services for the production.”
Other agreements give films clearance to promote at festivals. Notable films in that category include Michael Mann’s Ferrari,...

"I'm out here to hunt buffalo... haul back their hides, and sell them!! When we're done, we'll sure have something to show for it." Sony Pictures has revealed the official trailer for Butcher's Crossing, a western thriller arriving in theaters this October. This actually premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival, with stops at the Rome, Chicago, Lone Star, Ostend, Glasgow, and Manchester Film Festivals as well. A frontier epic about an Ivy League drop-out as he travels deep into the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that puts his life and sanity at risk. Adapted from the highly acclaimed novel by John Williams. Set in the 1870s, the unsettling story is said to "dismantle the myths of modern America." While TIFF 2023 is in the books, a selection from TIFF’s 2022 edition is finally coming out over a year after its debut. Butcher’s Crossing, starring Nicolas Cage as a buffalo hunter in the old west, played to good reviews (including my own), with many noting that it was much artier fare for Cage, being an adaptation of the classic novel by John Edward Williams. In the movie, a young man (Fred Hechinger) bankrolls a buffalo hunting expedition with two older guides, including the mysterious Miller (Cage), which soon becomes a journey into madness.
Directed by Gabe Polsky and co-starring Sound of Metal’s Paul Raci, Tokyo Vice’s Rachel Keller and Xander Berkley, Butcher’s Crossing takes a dark, sombre look at the buffalo trade, which brought the animal to near extinction levels, starving the indigenous population, who relied on buffalo for food.

Saban Films has picked up the North American rights to Scandinavian thriller Good Boy from Blue Finch Films.

Good Boy, which premiered to acclaim at Beyond Fest in 2022, follows Sigrid, who thinks she’s met the perfect match in Christian until she comes to find out that he lives with a man who acts like his pet dog. The film is produced by Marie Waade Gronning, Ane Marie Sletten and Karl Oskar Asli, and executive produced by Darren Gaskell and Nicolai Narvesen Lied. The deal was negotiated by Steve Break on behalf of...

“It Follows” star Maika Monroe has joined Nicolas Cage in the horror-thriller “Longlegs.”
Directed and written by Osgood “Oz” Perkin (“I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives In The House”), the film is produced by Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan’s C2 Motion Picture Group (“Babylon”). Principal photography is now underway in Vancouver, Canada.
In “Longlegs,” FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.
After her breakout role in “It Follows,” Monroe has had further starring roles in “The Guest” and “Greta and Watcher,” building out her profile as a 21st century horror star.

Incredible as it may seem, this is Nicolas Cage’s first western, although he clearly enjoyed shooting it, because he’s already done another one (Butcher’s Crossing). Essentially a knock-off version of True Grit, The Old Way isn’t especially overwhelming in terms of plot and direction, but it’s eminently watchable all the same, thanks to strong onscreen chemistry between Cage and young co-star Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The film begins with a prologue sequence, in which grizzled gun-for-hire Colton Briggs shoots and kills almost everyone during an attempted hanging, including the man he was supposed to be rescuing in the first place. Twenty years later, Briggs (now sadly sans moustache) has hung up his guns in favour of raising his young...

In "Renfield," Nicolas Cage becomes the latest in a long line of actors to play Dracula. The actor previously played a creature of the night in "Vampire's Kiss," but this time, he's playing the lord of all ghouls. However, Cage's Dracula will merely be a supporting player; the star of the movie is his eponymous servant (Nicholas Hoult). After so many years at the Count's side, Renfield is reconsidering if he still wants the job. When your boss is a blood-sucking demon, the severance package probably isn't one you want.
"Reinfeld" looks like it will lean more on the latter side of "horror comedy," so if nothing else, Cage's expressive acting is a good fit. He's already said that he looked toward the utterly bonkers horror film "Malignant" for inspiration, so there's no telling how far he's going to take the character. With so many previous Draculas to draw on,...

Nicolas Cage's acting career spans 41 years and over 100 movies. That's more than enough time to make just about every type of film, and Cage has been plenty adventurous in his choices. He's done dramas, comedy, action, horror, suspense, war flicks, and several unquantifiable brain scramblers. He's played Ghost Rider. He's played the screenwriter of the film in which he's starring (and the screenwriter's fictional brother). He's played himself.
But somehow, after all this time, Cage hadn't appeared in a Western until recently -– and the itch must've hit him something fierce, because he's now made two of them! One is "Butcher's Crossing," an environmentally conscious tragedy lamenting the ruin of America's westward expansion. The other, which opens in theaters today, is "The Old Way," and it is precisely the kind of Western its title indicates. Cage stars as Colton Briggs, a reformed gunman whose peaceful domestic existence is shattered...

Nicolas Cage has tackled a wide variety of genres over the course of his career, but he only recently dipped his toe into the world of Westerns. One of his first will be The Old Way, and Lionsgate has released a pair of clips for your viewing pleasure, which you can check out below.
The first clip finds Nicolas Cage’s character waking his daughter after hearing gunshots in the distance, while the second finds the pair holding several injured men at gunpoint.
Directed by Brett Donowho (Acts of Violence) from a screenplay by Carl W. Lucas (The Wave), The Old Way stars Nicholas Cage as Colton Briggs, “a cold-blooded gunslinger turned respectable family man. When an outlaw and his gang put Colton and his family in peril, Colton is forced to take up arms with an unlikely partner — his 12-year-old daughter (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) — in this action-filled film that...

Nicolas Cage scholars might quibble with the promotional claim that Brett Donowho’s “The Old Way” is the actor’s “first traditional Western” — a choice of words that’s careful not to step on the spurs of neo-genre fare like “Butcher’s Crossing” and “Prisoners of the Ghostland” — but
The first part of the problem is that Donowho’s competent but uncompelling oater doesn’t have enough fresh meat on its bones to fill out its Western cosplay. While Morgan Smith’s jaunty score does its best to summon memories of “My Darling Clementine,” and Carl W. Lucas’ threadbare script channels the same one-way modernity that “Shane” once rode towards an uncertain sunset, “The Old Way” clearly lacks the ambition to shoot for any identity of its own.
Even worse is that it gestures towards one anyway, as this low-budget genre exercise allows its characters just enough ammunition for us to...

We’ve seen Nicolas Cage do nearly anything and everything throughout his career in movies, but we’ve never really seen the actor take on a traditional Western. That’s about to change. For one, Cage appears in one of his first at TIFF this year, in filmmaker Gabe Polsky’s “Butcher’s Crossing” (read our review). And while we wait for distribution on that film, another Western that Cage shot, “The Old Way,” has taken the pole position to earn the bragging rights of “Nicolas Cage’s first-ever Western.”

Nicolas Cage is back! Okay, it's not like he went anywhere, as the running joke goes in his recent meta-action-comedy "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent." Still, there's no denying we're in the middle of a Cage-aissance following his direct-to-video era, starting with films like "Mandy" and "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" in 2018, and continuing on to "Massive Talent" and, in particular, his haunting, ruminative drama "Pig" (pictured above).
Up next, Cage stars in "Butcher's Crossing," a western that finds the actor "at his most subdued, but still radiating energy that can only be described as malevolent," as /Film's Chris Evangelista put it in his positive review from the film's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. It's one of several intriguing projects Cage has coming out between now and the end of 2023, including Chris McKay's horror-comedy "Renfield" (featuring Cage as Count Dracula himself).

Sir Ben Kingsley has added the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dalí to his list of iconic film roles, thanks to “Dalíland,” which closed out the 2022 Toronto Film Festival. Kingsley visited TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival for a discussion about the filmmaking process.

A tale of disillusionment, bitterness and endurance set during the near-extinction of the American buffalo, Gabe Polsky’s Butcher’s Crossing might have made for a harrowing Werner Herzog film a few decades back. John Williams’ novel follows a privileged young man who quits Harvard in search of raw experience in the West, and gets exactly what he’s paying for. Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) stars as the eager young man, submitting himself to the wisdom of a seasoned hunter (Nicolas Cage) but slowly coming to suspect that the man and his entire enterprise (and maybe the whole story of white men raping the American West?) is fundamentally unsound.
Though solidly made, it’s a Western without enough fire or novelty to attract a great deal of interest, though its two leads should keep it from getting lost in the crowd completely.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the worldwide rights to “It Ain’t Over,” a documentary about baseball legend Yogi Berra that first premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Sean Mullin (“Amira & Sam”) directed “It Ain’t Over,” which is described as an intimate portrait about a misunderstood American icon. Berra’s granddaughter Lindsay Berra personally tells his story that aims to go beyond his catchphrases and aphorisms — or “Yogisms” — and tries to focus on how many of his on the field accomplishments were often overshadowed by his persona off the field.
Lindsay Berra also sits down with former Yankee teammates and players whom he managed, as well as writers, broadcasters and other admirers. Among those interviewed are the Berra family, Joe Torre, Derek Jeter, Don Mattingly, Bob Costas, Billy Crystal and even the late Vin Scully, among others.

As the Toronto Film Festival marks a big post-pandemic return to the physical realm with something almost normal for its 47th edition, the biggest sighs of relief may well come from local Canadian filmmakers and premiere party organizers.
“You cannot launch a festival film digitally. You need to build up hype in person. You need to meet people in person to be able to forge relationships to launch your film,” Markhor Pictures producer Shehrezade Mian, who is launching Antoine Bourges’ Concrete Valley immigrant drama in Toronto as part of the Wavelengths sidebar, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Mian insists fellow filmmakers who screened their films at scaled-down Toronto festivals in 2020 and 2021 had their launch plans undermined by play on digital platforms. “The buzz this year is so much more hyped and so much more intense,” she added.

Fifteen years after I first came to the Toronto International Film Festival and saw Juno, Michael Clayton, Eastern Promises, Into the Wild and The Savages, among other excellent films, I’m happy, as always, to be back at the best fest north of the border, and hopeful, as always, to match the high bar set by my first visit to it. Rather than rush to file separate write-ups of every noteworthy thing that I see and hear while on the ground here, at the cost of missing other noteworthy things, I’ve decided to file a dispatch every few days addressing a bunch of stuff. This initial piece covers the fest’s first three days.

Sanctuary revolves around a dominatrix (Qualley) and her wealthy client (Abbott) engaging in a battle of wills inside a luxury hotel suite after he tries to end their relationship. Daniel Radcliffe plays a parallel universe version of Weird Al Yankovic in the (faux) biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” according to the film’s writer and director Eric Appel. Check out the video, above.
“This version of Weird Al that we’ve created in the movie is like a bizarro version of Weird Al that exists in an alternate universe,” director Eric Appel said at TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival, where the movie debuted.
Appel added: “What we really wanted was to find an actor that both worked well in drama and in comedy and that would get what we were going for, have the comedy chops to pull it off, and also be able to, like, 100 fully commit to playing this absurd comedy as straight as possible and as dramatic as possible.” Radcliffe met those criteria and then some.

Gabe Polsky’s new acid Western “Butcher’s Crossing,” premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, takes place on the vast fertile plains of hubris, where if you stare far enough into the horizon, you can probably see your own uppance come.
Based on a novel by John Williams takes place in Kansas in 1874, where a young wide-eyed student named Will Andrews has abandoned his Ivy League education in favor of seeing the country and palling around with buffalo hunters. It’s a decision that old man McDonald, a fur trader and distant friend of the family, thinks is intensely ill-advised, so he warns him — in a tone so condescending it was practically guaranteed to have the opposite of its intended effect — that following this path will lead Will to soul-obliterating ruin.
Undeterred, Will proceeds to ally himself with the first semi-friendly person he meets, a hunter named Miller (Nicolas Cage), who...

Massachusetts is the best state to live in for reasons its residents have always known: we’re smarter, healthier, happier, and all around better off than everybody else. We have the decency and common sense to shove most of our pro-fascist wingnuts toward the boondocks. We also know what to do in inclement weather: hunker down with our stockpiled milk and bread until the snow stops falling.
The last is a lesson the characters in Gabe Polsky’s “Butcher’s Crossing” would do well to learn.

"We don't belong out here," says Fred (Jeremy Bobb), a professional buffalo skinner. He's right. The "out here" is the vast, sprawling, harsh foothills of the Rocky Mountains, where a group of men have come to make a killing, both literally and monetarily, hunting buffalo. It's 1874, and the overwhelming theme of men being where they don't belong prevails through "Butcher's Crossing," Gabe Polsky's ultra-bleak abstract Western based on the novel by John Edward Williams. Shot on the cheap in 18 days, "Butcher's Crossing" makes a lot of little, stretching its small budget to the extreme to create a nightmarish saga of violent men who seem convinced of their own superiority over everything, especially the land.
Young Harvard dropout Will has left behind a life of privilege to see the West. Specifically, he wants to go along on a buffalo hunt. Once, there were so many buffalo on the land that...

Friday was a big night for crowd-pleasing films at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Gina Prince-Bythewood’s epic “The Woman King” screening at Roy Thomson Hall to a huge ovation and Nicholas Stoller’s “Bros” premiering a few hours later for a raucous crowd in the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Both films thrilled the capacity crowds in TIFF’s two largest venues, “The Woman King” by putting a group of Black female warriors (led by Viola Davis) at the center of a rousing full-scale action movie and “Bros” by simply being, as co-writer and star Billy Eichner said, “an R-rated gay rom-com that’s going to be released in more than 3,000 theaters” by Universal.
And not that Eichner is competitive or anything, but when he came on stage with Stoller and the rest of the cast at the end of the screening, he encouraged...
