“I’m somewhere in or near Grand Rapids, Michigan,” estimates “Weird Al” Yankovic from the back of his tour bus, his signature curls trying to escape from behind headphones. The singer-songwriter was definitely heading to Toronto, where his movie Weird opened the film festival’s Midnight Madness section on Thursday.
Weird, which Yankovic co-wrote with director Eric Appel (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Silicon Valley) and produced, stars Daniel Radcliffe as a subversive version of Yankovic, seen in the trailer shirtless, swilling whiskey onstage and entertaining Madonna (played by Evan Rachel Wood) in between accordion riffs. The film offers Yankovic, long considered the undisputed king of the parody song with hits like “Amish Paradise” and “Like a Surgeon” — sendups of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” and Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” respectively — the opportunity to spoof his own rise to stardom as well as the well-worn tropes of the music biopic.

Daniel Craig’s take on James Bond is now forever set in stone.
After the final installment of Craig’s turn as Bond, the Faroe Islands commissioned a custom grave to honor the filming location of “No Time to Die.” The island of Kalsoy served as the villain’s lair for Bond’s nemesis Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek), who ultimately kills the famed MI6 agent.
The grave is positioned near the Kallur lighthouse on the island and reads, “In Memory of James Bond, 1962–2021,” as reported by the official Guide to the Faroe Islands page.
“Local villagers have taken it upon themselves to erect a tombstone in memory of the renowned spy,” the statement reads. “Made from Faroese basalt, the gravestone has been cut by an acclaimed stonemason in the village of Skopun. It has then been transported to the exact location on Kalsoy, where Bond meets his fate in ‘No Time to Die.

Roku presented its first original programming slate to media buyers at the NewFronts, showcasing programming acquired in separate deals with Quibi and This Old House.
In a 30-minute virtual pitch, the streaming provider noted the median age of its viewers is 39 (compared with 60-plus for the broadcast networks), and they are less tethered to the traditional cord. About 57% of Roku users have no pay-tv subscription, but many of them are willing to pay for SVOD services like Netflix and Disney+.
This “streaming-first audience is unreachable on linear TV,” said Julian Mintz, Roku’s national brand sales lead.
Roku Originals include a number of the shows that had a brief run on the now-defunct Quibi. Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile-focused subscription streaming outlet fizzled last fall, after burning through most of its $1.75 billion in start-up capital. Not surprisingly, no mention was made in the presentation that shows like Dummy, Survive and The Fugitive...

Five years after "The Dress" made everyone question their reality, Billie Eilish is here to melt your brain once again. This time, it's not a dress that is getting the internet talking, but a pair of shoes the "No Time to Die" singer swears is a certain color. On her Oct. 17 Instagram Story, Billie showed off a pair of Nike Air sneakers. She joked that her dad claimed the sneakers were "pink and white," when they obviously were not. The only problem? To many fans, the sneakers do look pink and white... which apparently blew Billie's mind. "Not you guys saying they're pink and white too," Billie captioned a video of her shocked...

With Lovecraft Country finishing its acclaimed first season, you may be looking to fill that new gap in your viewing schedule with more content based on or inspired by the works of the enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island.
Let’s get one thing clear upfront: Howard Phillips Lovecraft was very much a product of his time and upbringing, and his views on race, ethnicity, and class — while commonplace for where and when he lived — were truly noxious, an aspect of his legacy that Lovecraft Country addresses in its own themes. But it’s also clear that Lovecraft was arguably the most influential horror writer of the 20th century, with a reach that extends to this day.
While there have been a number of movies based directly on stories by Lovecraft — including titles like Die, Monster, Die! (1965), The Dunwich Horror (1970), Re-Animator (1985) and its sequels, From Beyond (1986), Dagon (2001), The Whisperer in Darkness...

Bonjour, and congratulations on making it to Friday. As usual, International Insider is here to bookend your week with some must-reads and analysis from recent days. Jake Kanter with you in the saddle this week.
Cinemas In Crisis
Shutting up shop: Major global exhibitor Cineworld sent shockwaves through the biz this week when it made the surprise move to temporarily re-close all 127 of its sites in the UK and Ireland as well as its 536 Regal theatres in the U.S. The move came after Bond pic No Time To Die (pictured) delayed its release by six months, with the exhibitor citing a lack of high-profile titles on the slate. Some 45,000 staff are affected, and no timeframe has been given for reopening.
The context: After months of closures, things had started to look up for the theatrical exhibition business after Warner Bros pulled the trigger and released Tenet, grossing $300M+ globally.

Billie Eilish and Finneas appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Monday night for a moody, black and white performance of their James Bond theme, “No Time to Die.”
The brother/sister duo performed the song in some sort of grand hall — the simple rendition (just piano and voice) nevertheless filling the cavernous space. Eilish and Finneas also spoke with Fallon about the song’s origins. “For many years, we’ve wanted to write a Bond song,” Eilish said. “Not even like we thought we could, it was just...

Whether or not you know his name, H.P Lovecraft has had a rather significant influence on modern horror. The late 20th century writer is best known for his mastery of "cosmic horror," a sort of otherworldly and existential dread that injects deep, indescribable fear into your veins. Cosmic horror is hard to pin down, but something like 2018's Annihilation or even 1982's The Thing are great examples. Terrors that are almost incomprehensible in nature. Obviously, with such complex mechanisms at work in Lovecraft's writing, it should come as no surprise that his stories can be, in many cases, impossible to adapt. But that hasn't stopped people from trying!
Some of the most notable Lovecraftian adaptations include The Haunted Palace (1963), Re-Animator (1985), and Necronomicon (1994). More notable still are films that take great inspiration from his work. For instance, many believe that the monster from Cloverfield is based on one of Lovecraft's most iconic monsters,...

It’s January 1, 2019. We have all survived another calendar year. And that means it’s time for the Parade of Roses in Pasadena, Calif.
The dawn of 2018 will bring us the 130th edition of the parade, also known as the Tournament of Roses — that’s an incredibly long amount of time, honestly, longer than any living human has been around.
And should you want to check out the Rose Parade, you’ll have any number of options to do so. Up above you can watch a livestream from Ktla, the local L.A. station which annually broadcasts the parade. Parade coverage begins at 8 a.m. Pst.
Speaking of which, there are a pile of other places you can watch coverage of the parade.
The Tournament of Roses broadcast partners include ABC, NBC, The Hallmark Channel, Hgtv, Univision and Rfdtv, as well as all those networks’ relevant streaming platforms. Most of...

Production is already (and secretly) underway on a feature version of the popular and barb-filled show that hails from Funny or Die.
Scott Aukerman, who directed many of the series' segments and co-created the program, is helming the movie that once again sees Galifianakis as the inappropriate host of a low-budget talk show. Billy Eichner and Emma Stone bombard New Yorkers with questions about social media and film in the new installment of Billy on the Street.
Eichner opens the episode with a rhetorical red herring. “So many questions on our mind: Will our country always be this divided? Are our civil rights once again at stake? Will the United States continue to alienate our closest allies? Will our president be convicted of a crime?” But he doesn’t ask any of these questions as he stalks the streets, microphone in hand. In his trademark high-energy style, Eichner will bombard unsuspecting pedestrians with questions on the streets of New York City, with a celebrity sidekick in tow. Audiences get to see people’s surprised reactions, as well as funny quips by Eichner.
Guests on the upcoming episodes include Tiffany Haddish (“Girl’s Trip”), Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”), Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”), and more. Produced by Funny or Die and Lyft Entertainment, the web series will be available on the show’s YouTube channel, Funny or Die’s social media platforms, FunnyOrDie.com, and Eichner’s social media platforms.

"Oh no... I think I cut myself!" Netflix has released another official trailer for their comedy The Package, which is now available, the latest film from Funny or Die filmmaker Jake Szymanski (Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates). The wacky, stupid comedy is about a group of teenage friends who go on a spring break camping trip, but an accident causes them to change their plans in hopes of saving their friend. Yeah, it's dumb and made for teenagers to get drunk and laugh at. The full cast for this includes Daniel Doheny, Geraldine Viswanathan, Sadie Calvano, Luke Spencer Roberts, Eduardo Franco, Michael Eklund, Gary Jones, Alexander Calvert, Sugar Lyn Beard, and Blake Anderson. This looks so, so bad and I don't even know why Netflix is pushing it with two full trailers, but here we go anyway. Have at it. Sirens alum Kevin Daniels and Avra Friedman (Stop the Bleeding) are set for recurring roles opposite Avan Jogia, Kelli Bergland, Beau Mirchoff and Roxane Mesquida on Now Apocalypse, Starz’s upcoming original half-hour comedy series from creator/executive producer Gregg Araki and Steven Soderbergh.
Co-written by Araki, who also directs, and Vogue.com sex columnist Karley Sciortino, Now Apocalypse is a 10-episode surreal, coming-of-age comedy that follows Ulysses (Jogia) and his friends Carly (Berglund), Ford (Mirchoff) and Severine (Mesquida), who are on various quests pursing love, sex and fame while navigating the strange and oftentimes bewildering city of Los Angeles.
Daniels will play Barnabas. He approaches Ford (Mirchoff), who’s diligently working on his screenplay in a coffee shop, and introduces himself as a producer who’d be interested in reading Ford’s script. Friedman will portray Magenta, a very committed but meek and untalented actress in Carly’s (Berglund) acting class.

As viewers continue to balance increasing television options on shrinking screens, the Emmys have begun to celebrate exemplary content tailor-made for rapid consumption with its short- form categories. Likewise, network executives behind this burgeoning digital content are recognizing the importance of talent, both on and off camera, who can successfully jump from one platform to another.
For AMC’s Lyle Underkoffler, senior VP of new digital business, the key to ensuring talent will resonate both on its long-form programming, like “Fear the Walking Dead,” and on its short-form content like the Emmy-nominated “Fear the Walking Dead: Passage,” is to keep enough of the talent in-house in order to maintain a through-line for its shorter spinoffs and their parent series.
“What we allowed [with “Passage”] is folks on the show to expand their creative capacities to a different location and a different setting that wouldn’t work in the show itself,” Underkoffler says.

In F-rated Netflix comedy “Ibiza,” best friends Harper (Gillian Jacobs), Nikki (Vanessa Bayer) and Leah (Phoebe Robinson) have ditched Manhattan for a wild weekend in Spain where they’ll be welcomed with the 10 words every girl wants to hear: “Please serve yourself with food, drinks, and eye-opening sexual experiences.” That greeting is courtesy of wealthy mansion-owner Hernando (Jordi Mollà), one of a soccer-team’s worth of suitors vying to take the Americans to bed. Men come and go with a breezy freedom, not the manifest destiny of ordinary romantic comedies. Except for Harper’s laser-focus on a Scottish DJ named Leo who inspires her to re-route their vacation from Barcelona to eponymous party island, where she hopes to make stoned eyes at him across a nightclub as the Edm beat pumps like her heart.

A party has many connotations, at least two of which – a festive gathering and a political organization – are the direct subjects of Sally Potter’s new film. Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas) is throwing a small soiree to celebrate her new appointment as the opposition party’s minister of health (never stated, but based on her stated views, presumably the left-leaning Labour group). This two-fold approach, of a celebration amongst similarly-minded individuals, suggests a unity that is not there. Indeed, in most common understandings of any type of party, a sense of shared purpose and harmony is almost assumed. Potter doesn’t see much of that going around.
Those gathered are Janet’s husband Bill (Timothy Spall), his college roommate Martha (Cherry Jones) and her newly-pregnant partner Jinny (Emily Mortimer), and Janet’s oldest friend April (Patricia Clarkson) and her own significant other Gottfried (Bruno Ganz). Banker Tom (Cillian Murphy) also wanders in,...

In November 2016, Warner Bros agreed to acquire Machinima, the digital media company known for its gamer and pop culture content. A few months later, Russell Arons became Machinima's Gm after the departure of former CEO Chad Gutstein. We haven't heard much from the company since that wave of activity, but now, Machinima is putting forth a new look. The company's rebranding efforts include a new logo and increased activity on platforms like Twitch and Facebook.
While Machinima was once known as one of the foremost multi-channel networks in the online video industry, its current focus is on content production. Its recently-launched Twitch channel is active 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it recently launched its first Facebook Watch series, Co-Op Connection. Two more Watch shows -- the self-explanatory Gaming Rap Battles and a Minecraft game show called Win, Mine, or Die -- are coming soon.

Children of the Corn: Runaway is the tenth horror film in this franchise, unbelievably. Children of the Corn: Genesis (2011) was the previous intonation of Stephen King's short story. Writer Joel Soisson has written both films. This time, John Gulager (Piranha 3Dd) takes the helm. Marci Miller (Most Likely to Die, 2015) stars, along with: Blaine Maye (Unnatural) and Lynn Andrews III. The film's first trailer is hosted here along with the film's DVD cover. This time, a young woman escapes a child cult, in a Midwestern town. She spends the next ten years in hiding. But, something is following her. Forced to protect her child, Ruth (Miller) must face this cult, before it kills her only child. Children of the Corn: Runaway is a multi-company production. Dimension Films has organized this title as they did with Genesis. They have also teamed up with Gatlin Returns and Strike Accord, to finish the film's production.

The Slender Man legend is one of the oldest creepypasta stories around. So old that it feels like the Sony film revolving around this character feels stale on arrival. The trailer feels like one of those Funny or Die trailers without any type of punchline. While this feels like a total cash-in on the character, the question is, do fans of the story even care? Especially after the sad story that became a HBO documentary, Beware the Slenderman
You may remember that many people were trying to make a film adaptation out of The Slender Man but had many issues where many different people claimed they were the genesis of the character. In the Press Release I received, it seems like they nailed it down (or at least credited) to Victor Surge (which is a pseudonym of Eric Knudsen). Let’s watch the trailer, shall we?

In an unfortunate coincidence for T.J. Miller, his Comedy Central series The Gorburger Show was cancelled on the same day that stories of an alleged sexual assault in his past surfaced. Comedy Central says the two events are unrelated and that it was planning to cancel the series before news of the alleged assault broke. Since leaving Silicon Valley on less-than-friendly terms, Miller has landed several supporting roles in movies, but his first starring vehicle, the animated The Emoji Movie, flopped over the summer.

The Gorburger Show is no longer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Comedy Central has cancelled the TV show after only one season. From Tj Miller, the alternative talk show originated as a digital short on Funny or Die. In the series, Miller voices Gorburger, a giant blue monster “who, after invading a Japanese television variety show and enslaving its staff, broadcasts from Japan and interviews guests in an attempt to understand what it means to be human.” Previous guests have included Jack Black, Carson Daly, Henry Rollins, Flea, Wayne Coyne, Eagles of Death Metal, Grouplove, and Tegan and Sara.Read More…...

Comedy Central is not going forward with The Gorburger Show, its alternative late-night show based on T.J. Miller's Funny or Die/Warner Music web series. It aired in an eight-episode Season 1 earlier this year. A network spokesman said the decision came before allegations from an anonymous woman surfaced today in the Daily Beast accusing Miller of sexual assault while a student at George Washington University in the early 2000s. Miller has denied the claims. We’re…...

The Season 2 finale of Being Human, “It’s My Party and I’ll Die if I Want To” completed a circle for Josh (Sammy Huntington) and Aidan (Sam Witwer) that began at the season premiere, “Turn This Mother Out.” Sally’s (Meaghan Rath) funny but poignant line–their last scene in the house together by the way–summed up the entire episode.
Sally: You two are about to go on two killing sprees for women… That is so hot.
Josh and Nora (Kristen Hager) found themselves in another standoff– this time against Josh’s maker, Ray (Andreas Apergis) and as humans, not wolves. In “Turn This Mother Out,” Aidan dug up his former love, Suren (Dichen Lachman) after an 80-year punishment and his fate is unknown after he’s thrown into the same casket that she laid in for decades but with her ashes covering his body.

Eventful week. To play catch-up:
The big news that every site reported in a slightly different way is that Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will be a digital series and a TV film, but not a TV show, at least not one produced by Syfy/Universal Cable Prods. You have probably read the Deadline article by now.
With the possibility that Universal may still shop B&C around, it doesn't sound like they have any immediate plans to make more of it beyond the existing pilot/web series/Mow.
No word yet on a release date, but Battlestar Wiki reports that we'll be seeing Blood & Chrome as a web series first and then as a TV movie.
Doug Drexler posted this the other day (full post at the link):
If sets had been built for this show, it would have cost 6 million easily, instead of only the 2 million it did cost,...

Chicago – There are bad movies, awful movies, and then there are total head scratchers. How did this get made? How did someone think this script would work? And how did So Many talented people get sucked into that person’s idea of filmmaking. The infamously tumultuous filming of Jim Sheridan’s “Dream House,” starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Naomi Watts, resulted in a film that was notoriously tugged between producer and directorial intentions. The result is a movie that satisfies no one except for the morbidly curious. It’s the worst project of everyone involved.
Blu-ray Rating: 0.5/5.0
That should get the hardcore movie nuts thinking, so let’s get this out of the way. Yes, worse than “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” (also, quite sadly, directed by Sheridan). Yes, worse than the awful Whoopi Goldberg vehicle “Eddie” (also written by David Loucka). Yes, worse than “The Invasion” (another Craig...

Director: Aaron Woodley.
Writer: William Morissey.
Cast: Kevin Zegers, Ray Liotta, and Stephen McHattie.
The Entitled is a film which was shot in Ontario, Canada, with help from Telefilm Canada. The film stars Kevin Zegers of Wrong Turn fame, Canadian actor Stephen McHattie (Die) and the versatile actor Ray Liotta. This is a tense kidnap thriller that incorporates some important messages about "The American Dream" and its promise of wealth. Occasionally predictable, director Aaron Woodley keeps the tension high through malevolent planning, double-crosses, false accusations and murder.
The film begins with Paul feeling trapped by his job and his lot in life. His mother is sick and her medication bills continue to rise. Meanwhile, his parents have to foreclose on their house. These are desperate times. So, Paul steps outside of the law to plan an elaborate kidnapping, which, while intricate, does not go how he would like. Soon characters are being killed,...

Although Dominic James's Die isn't an original thriller, it sure is entertaining and well acted. Nothing less. Nothing more.

Billionnaire Robert Moretti (Fabio Fulco) raises funds for the needy, but behind closed doors, he likes to get rough on prostitutes.
Mark Murdock (Elias Koteas) is a police detective who wants to commit suicide.
Dr. Diane Robinson (Patricia McKenzie) still can't get over her daughter's death.
Dr. Zach Emmett (Karl Prunner) unintentionally killed a patient by over-prescribing a medication. Besides being under investigation from his professional order, he's been battling depression.
Lisa (Emily Hampshire) lost a lot of dough at the casino and tried to slit her wrist while she was naked in her bathtub.

Universal have finally released the theatrical trailer for Dream House – the forthcoming Shining-esque (even down to the little girls and the dated wallpaper) horror thriller that was originally due for a release last year but was inexplicably ordered for re-shoots when test audiences didn’t think all that much of Jim Sheridan’s (Brothers, Get Rich or Die Tryin’) film.
Problem was these re-shoots were bogged down by the incredibly busy work schedule of Daniel Craig who was unable to take the time off from filming The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for weeks… but finally they got their act together and after a lengthy post-production, the film is coming Sept. 30th. Perhaps it might play at the Toronto Film Festival as the film was shot there.
