In
Alan Plater's original novel, the scene where Oliver and Diane declare themselves to be "un-husband" and "un-wife" was set in Durham Cathedral. The BBC could not get permission to film it in the cathedral, because the scene involved the characters agreeing *not* to get married, even though they made all the correct vows, so it was filmed instead in Lindisfarne Priory, a ruined abbey on the island of Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island) a mile off the coast of Northumberland and joined to the mainland by a tidal causeway.
