Netflix on Tuesday unveiled four new Italian originals – two feature films and two series – that confirm its continued investment in Italy as local subscribers grow. The new projects also bolster the fact that the bulk of the streamer’s Italian productions are not high end and have a primarily local focus.
During a Rome presentation Eleonora Andreatta – affectionately known as Tinny – who is Netflix’s VP of Italian originals, said that Netflix remains “committed to our investment in Italy and Italian stories with conviction, continuing our long-term commitment to the country and its creative community.”
Andreatta, who owing to having caught Covid-19 was speaking remotely to the packed room, described Netflix’s lineup as being characterised by “Authentic stories, able to speak to the present [and] about the present and [which can] emotionally touch the audience on issues closest to the lives they live.”

Nicole Morganti, Amazon Studios head of Italian originals, is being promoted by the streamer to the newly expanded role of head of local originals for Southern Europe encompassing Italy, France and Spain.
Morganti, who has over 20 years of experience in the Italian entertainment industry, joined Amazon Studios as head of unscripted originals for Italy in February 2019 from her previously held position of Discovery Italy’s VP of talent and productions. She was promoted in April 2020 to the role of head of Amazon originals — scripted and unscripted — for Italy.
Since joining Amazon, Morganti has led the streamer’s multi-pronged approach in Italy combining scripted, unscripted and sports content. She has launched a mix of bold scripted shows such as hit dark Mafia comedy “The Bad Guy” and young adult coming-of-age drama “Prisma,” which is about twin brothers who go against gender norms in different ways. She has also worked on the docu-reality series “The Ferragnez,...

Cannes – Looking at the multiple stages of audience ratings from overnights to pre-broadcast, to live, then plus-seven days and plus-28 days, launching a TV show these days is like a multistage rocket getting to the moon,” said Frédéric Vaulpré, vice president at Paris-based research firm Global Audience & Content Evolution (Glance).
He was talking just before his Monday presentation on Global TV Trends at Mipcom, made with Glance head of content insight Avril Blondelot. Images created for the presentation include a rocket with plus-28-days and pre-broadcast for wings, and live forming the spaceship’s body.
“You need reliable data. That’s where we come in. We see the complexity of these ratings,” he said.
At the Monday session, Vaulpré addressed trends in ratings, broadcasting, platforms and streaming before Blondelot looked at the content side of things: Genres that work; upcoming highlights to track.

Prime Video has sent the Italian instalment of the Russo Brothers’ global sci-fi event series Citadel into production and cast Matilda de Angelis as its lead, as Amazon Italy execs today touted the streamer’s local growth here at the Mia Market in Rome.
De Angelis recently made her international breakthrough in Susanne Bier’s limited series The Undoing, alongside Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. It won her the Grandi Serie Silver Ribbon Award for the International Performance of the Year in 2021.
The Italian Citadel, currently untitled and part of Prime Video and Agbo’s expansive spy series, is being produced in Italy by ITV Studios-owned Cattleya.
Additional cast includes Lorenzo Cervasio, Maurizio Lombardi, Thekla Reuten, Julian Piaton, Filippo Nigro and Bernhard Schütz. Arnaldo Catinari (Suburra: Blood on Rome) is directing and Alessandro Fabbri is head writer. Gina Gardini is showrunner.

Rome’s innovative Mia market dedicated to international TV series, feature films, and documentaries kicks off its eighth edition Tuesday, headed by new chief Gaia Tridente, who has added an animation section and been busy raising the curated mart’s international profile.
The Oct. 11-15 Mia mart – its acronym stands for the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo or International Audiovisual Market – this year is positioned prior to the Mipcom content market and conference that runs Oct. 17-20 in Cannes, since Mipcom has shifted its dates back.
But this non-voluntary repositioning has not impacted the number of registered Mia attendees, which is up more than 12 compared with past editions. More than 900 international industry execs are registered for the boutique event being held in central Rome’s Palazzo Barberini, which is Italy’s National Ancient Art gallery that during Mia doubles as the market’s hub where company stands are set up amid Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

It’s hard to believe 2022 is almost over. Kids are returning back to school, the seasons will start to change, and the fall television lineup will be here before you know it. With that, it’s time to start prioritizing what shows to give your free time to. Amazon Prime Video is going for broke this September, with the massive undertaking that is their adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” series, but that’s not all. Let’s take a look on everything coming to Amazon Prime Video in September.
The biggest show coming to Amazon Prime Video is, of course, the aforementioned “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Though not associated with the spate of films directed by Peter Jackson as it’s a prequel, the trailers are playing up an equally ambitious and opulent sense of filmmaking. Amazon Prime Video is trying something different,...
