Fiona Apple is the go-to songwriter for exorcising your romantic demons, ruing the ones you loved, the ones who didn’t love you back, the ones you pushed away amid yet another freefall of your own design. She’s also the go-to singer for three studio comedy auteurs: Michael Showalter, Judd Apatow, and Paul Feig.
Apple’s songs have featured in three of their films — Apple wrote the original song “Dull Tool” for Apatow’s “This Is 40,” capturing a decades-long marriage at its breaking point. Elsewhere, her epic ball of romantic resignation “Cosmonauts,” off the 2020 album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” was also originally meant for that film. Meanwhile, her classic cabaret-inspired love song “Paper Bag,” about having too much emotional baggage to enter into a new relationship she wants “so bad, oh it kills,” featured in Feig’s “Bridesmaids” in a montage of Annie (Kristen Wiig) making cupcakes as...

We almost take it for granted, but before Bridesmaids, it was pretty rare to have a comedy depict female friendships in an authentic way, that allows women to be crass. This was part of the appeal for Rumer Willis jumping on board My Divorce Party, as she talks about the film and what appealed so greatly to her as an actor.
We also discuss holidays in Greece, laughing on set… and of course we spoke about her father, the wonderful Bruce Willis, as she recounts precious moments from her childhood when she’s visit him on set, which she discusses as being her introduction to an industry that she now wishes to explore from behind the lens.
My Divorce Party is out now.

Barbra Streisand is seemingly taken aback by the backlash she has received regarding an Ozempic comment she left on Melissa McCarthy’s latest Instagram post.
The Egot winner took to her social media Tuesday to offer an explanation for her remark, writing, “Omg — I went on Instagram to see the photos we’d posted of the beautiful flowers I’d received for my birthday! Below them was a photo of my friend Melissa McCarthy who I sang with on my Encore album. She looked fantastic! I just wanted to pay her a compliment. I forgot the world was reading!”
On Monday, McCarthy shared a photo on Instagram of herself with director Adam Shankman at the Center Theatre Group’s Ctg The Gala event in Los Angeles from the day prior. The Bridesmaids star captioned her post, “Pastels only to honor the incredible @matthewbourne13 at the @ctgla gala last night with this fella @adamshankman!

Maya Rudolph is latest star to weigh in on the nepo baby debate.
If you didn’t know, the 51-year-old Emmy-winning actress’ famous parents are musician and songwriter Richard Rudolph and the late singer-songwriter Minnie Riperton, who was best known for her 1974 song “Lovin’ You.”
In a new interview, Maya explained why having famous parents didn’t help boost her comedy career.
Keep reading to find out more…“They were musicians. They weren’t actors,” Maya shared on the Armchair Podcast.
“My trajectory was, I wanted to go to New York, and I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live,” Maya explained. “I understand that drive to be somewhere else — forage in a new city and create my own path. But that’s a huge undertaking. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my dad writes songs, that’s gonna make me a comedian.’ There was no direct line. I knew I had to get there myself.

When Megan Leavey joined the Marines, she was looking for a fresh start. Things at home weren’t going well — she couldn’t keep a job, and her best friend had just died. After joining the Marines, though, she wasn’t faring much better — until she ended up in the K9 unit. There, she met a snarling, growling dog named Rex — and he scared her … a lot. But over time, and throughout their tours in Iraq, they became an inseparable, life-saving duo.
Based on a true story, the 2017 film Megan Leavey is the journey of an unlikely pair and how they managed to stay together against all odds. From director Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) — with a screenplay by Pamela Gray (Conviction), Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids), and Tim Lovestedt (Thunder Force) — the military drama stars Kate Mara, Ramón Rodríguez, and Tom Felton.

It's always a thrill when a former "Saturday Night Live" cast member comes back to Studio 8H to host the late night sketch comedy show. That's especially true when it's a cast member as beloved as Kristen Wiig. That last time the "Bridesmaids" star hosted "SNL" was in December 2020, and it just so happens the best sketch of the night was a new holiday favorite where she plays a mother who gets a robe for Christmas while the rest of the family gets a plethora of better gifts. However, since Kristen Wiig was hosting "SNL" for a fifth time this past weekend, she got a different robe. And she wasn't the only one.
While it's become customary for newly inducted Five Timers Club hosts to get monologue bits that bring back some legendary hosts like Steve Martin and Tom Hanks, it's not always logistically possible to make it a star-studded affair.

Promising to do for childbirth what Bridesmaids did for weddings, here’s the trailer for the upcoming comedy Babes.
After proving a hit at the Toronto Film Festival in the autumn of last year, the comedy movie Babes has now secured distribution – in America at least – and is on its way to wider release.
Neon has acquired the film in America, and is demonstrating some confidence in it too by unleashing it in May 2024. There’s zero mention of it on the UK schedules at the moment, and we’re unclear if a British distributor has signed the movie up. We’ll keep you posted on that bit as we hear more.
What we do have is the first trailer for the film though, that Neon has just released. It’s appearing like magic below these very works…

Rebel Wilson details how Hollywood’s pay scales can increase exponentially in her new memoir, Rebel Rising. The actress and comedian opens up about her salaries for Bridesmaids and the Pitch Perfect trilogy.
Wilson writes in the book that she was paid only $3,500 for 2011’s Bridesmaids, which starred Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy (Wilson played Brynn, the obnoxious roommate of Wiig’s Annie Walker). But the entirety of her small check went to Screen Actors Guild fees to join the union. Nevertheless, “that didn’t matter to me,” Wilson writes. “The experience was everything!”
Wilson notes she booked six new gigs within two weeks of Bridesmaids‘ release, one of which was the 2012 a cappella smash hit, Pitch Perfect.
“Boy, did that movie pay dividends!” Wilson writes, noting she was paid “SAG minimum scale, which was $65,000,” for the film. Pitch Perfect’s success spawned two sequels, in...

Speaking of the third movie, Rebel hinted that it almost looked very different.

Rebel Wilson writes in her new memoir “Rebel Rising” that she was able to successfully negotiate a $10 million salary to reprise the role of Fat Amy in “Pitch Perfect 3” (via People). The payday proved how much of a career Wilson built for herself over six years as she earned just $3,500 for her small breakthrough in 2011’s “Bridesmaids.”
The small “Bridesmaids” sum “didn’t matter to me,” Wilson writes. She took the role and didn’t think twice about the salary because the fee was enough to get her into the SAG-AFTRA union, which meant more opportunities in Hollywood. Wilson says she booked six movies after “Bridesmaids” opened in theaters, “one of which was ‘Pitch Perfect.’ Boy, did that movie pay dividends!”
In an interview with The New York Times about her memoir, Wilson was asked about her decision to write candidly about some of the salaries she earned during her acting career thus far.

My guest this week is Renée Elise Goldsberry.
A Tony and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee for her Broadway performance in Hamilton, Goldsberry starred as Nettie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple and as Mimi in Rent, along with roles in TV series The Good Wife and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the movie Tick, Tick… Boom! Now, you can see her flex both her acting and musical muscles in Girls5eva Season 3—the comedy series that earned Goldsberry Critics Choice nominations in 2022 and 2023. The show recently moved to Netflix for its third season.
Girls5eva follows an early aughts girl group as they try to get the band back together 20 years later. It’s a sort of Spice Girls reunion tour meets Spinal Tap with a side of Bridesmaids. Case in point: Goldsberry, as wannabe popstar Wickie Roy, announces that, like Billie Eilish, she too can have a documentary.

Kristen Wiig is getting Rose Byrne‘s support while promoting her new series Palm Royale!
The former Bridesmaids co-stars reunited at a Paley Museum event for the Apple TV+ series on Tuesday night (March 26) in New York City.
Palm Royale follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Palm Royale asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?”
Despite Kristen and Rose reuniting, don’t expect a Bridesmaids sequel.
Keep reading to find out more…
In a recent interview, Kristen shot down the possibility of a second movie.
“It’s never been a conversation,” she told THR. “That story had an end, and it’s so beloved to me for 10 million reasons, and I...

Rebel Wilson’s upcoming memoir, Rebel Rising, promises to be an intimate look at Wilson’s life. The book swears to share the good, the bad, and the sometimes hilarious moments of her journey to stardom. The nonfiction offering also chronicles her Hollywood interactions. One of those interactions is creating a stir. The book has launched a feud between Rebel Wilson and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Rebel Wilson names names on Instagram ahead of her book’s release
Rebel Wilson’s upcoming memoir has been on the radar of Sacha Baron Cohen for sometime, alleges the Bridesmaids star. According to Wilson, Cohen attempted to silence her and shut down press for her book because she spoke about him in one chapter. Recently, she claimed he had hired lawyers and a crisis management team to try to silence her.

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Propels Franchise Past $1B As Sequel Opens To $45M+ – Sunday Am Update
Sunday Am: No snowstorm or sour reviews stood in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘s path this weekend, as the Gil Kenan-directed, Jason Reitman-produced sequel minted a $45.2M opening after a nice spike on Saturday from families.
Yesterday came in at $16.8M, 5% ahead of Friday/previews’ $16M. If the numbers hold up, that’s the second-best start ever for a Ghostbusters’ movie after the 2016 female ensemble of Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
The domestic opening of the fifth movie takes the entire Ghostbusters franchise, per Sony, past $1 billion. I understand studio reports had the franchise through four films at $985M, a result that’s higher than Box Office Mojo. Mojo’s numbers on overseas are off on the first 1984 film.
Foreign for Frozen Empire was $16.4M from 7,500+ screens in 25 markets, bringing the global start here to $61.6M on the $100M production.

Maya Rudolph is the latest star to address calls for a sequel to her hit movie Bridesmaids.
The female-led 2011 comedy was a breakout hit in the genre and was expected to herald a generation of similar films.
In the years since it premiered, many have hoped for a sequel to catch up with the characters. However, costar Kristen Wiig recently made it clear that one was not in the works and likely never would be. Following her revelation, Maya revealed what she thought about the possibility.
Keep reading to find out more…
“I mean, if that’s how she feels…” Maya told Et. “I don’t know, I feel like people are always looking for some sort of answer from me, like, it’s not up to me.”
She continued, acknowledging that she understood the longing for a sequel: “We had the best time doing it, so I feel like I get it.

Bridesmaids made history when it premiered, and it’s an enduring classic that’s still quotable to this day. That’s in large part down to the movie’s incredibly talented cast of stars.
Centered around Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne, the female-fronted comedy features endlessly quotable lines, unforgettable gags and scenes that are still leaving viewers in stitches over two decades after premiering.
So many members of the cast have had successful careers in Hollywood, and they wracked up impressive fortunes in the process.
But who is the wealthiest? We did some digging and looked at the estimated net worth of the biggest celebrities to appear in the movie and ranked them. The top earner was worth nearly $100 million, which is double what the star in the No. 2 spot is worth!

One of the funniest moments at the recent Academy Awards ceremony occurred when Best Supporting Actress nominee Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) and Best Supporting Actor nominee Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) appeared together to pay a special tribute to the talented stunt performers who are so often overlooked for their indelible contributions to the motion picture industry. Blunt and Gosling traded barbs over their “Barbenheimer” feud — the result of their films competing against each other at the box office as well as the entire awards season. If their chemistry suggested anything, it’s that moviegoers are in for a real treat when their upcoming film “The Fall Guy” drops into theaters in May.
While Blunt and Gosling bluntly made light of their dispute, they weren’t the only Oscar presenters with scores to settle. There were several other big Hollywood stars who reunited on the stage alongside one of their past Oscar rivals,...

When the March box office seems to be tailing off after a weaker weekend, who you gonna call? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview to find out.
For the third weekend this month, we have the potential for a movie to open with more than $40 million after literally months without one. That new movie is Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the sequel to the Jason Reitman-directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which helped revive the franchise in 2021 with what is now lovingly referred to as a “requel,” i.e. a combo of a reboot and a sequel.
“Frozen Empire” brings back the newest Ghostbusters, played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenzie Grace, and other characters from “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” as well as the OGs (Original Ghostbusters): Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and even Annie Potts. Kristen Wiig reflected on the legacy of Bridesmaids and the possibility of filming a sequel in a new interview.
The 50-year-old actress starred in the 2011 comedy, which also featured the likes of Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson and Rose Byrne.
At the time of its release, it appeared that the movie would usher in a new age of female-driven comedies. However, over a decade later the reality is slightly different. Kristen commented on the development.
She also teased if we would see her getting into character as Annie again.

“People get scared,” Kristen said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “What’s wrong with having a big female cast, why is that scary?”
Sadly, it does not sound like a Bridesmaids sequel will change that: “It’s never been a conversation,” she said in response to questions about a sequel. “That story had an end,...

The romcom ruled the 1980s, and the Apatow comedies ruled the 2000s. The tastes may change, but films that bring incredible chemistry to the screen stand the test of time. It’s why we still watch When Harry Met Sally and The Forty-Year-Old Virgin decades after their release. Babes — a new film from Illana Glazer, Pamela Adlon, and Josh Rabinowitz, wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Yet, with Glazer in the lead, it’s got a unique sense of humor by returning to her Broad City roots.
Babes Plot
Best friends Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) watch movies every Thanksgiving. However, this year, Dawn goes into labor during the tradition. After helping Dawn to the hospital, Eden heads home for the night. While on the subway, she meets an actor who shares all of her interests. The two head home and have a one-night stand. Weeks later, Eden discovers she’s pregnant.

To surprise of basically no one, Robert Downey Jr. has just won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer." The movie was one of the biggest hits of 2023, both critically and financially, and Downey was a huge part of it. He brought the scheming, insecure Strauss to life on the big screen, and helped take a storyline that could've felt like a bunch of complicated legal clutter and turn it into an emotional, high-stakes battle of wills.
Downey's win is heartwarming for a whole host of reasons. One is the actor's well-known struggles with addiction in the late '90s and early 2000s, and the other is Downey Jr.'s long history of starring in exciting, varied, interesting films. From "Tropic Thunder" to "Zodiac" to his many appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this man has definitely put in the work to reach this career milestone.

When Judd Apatow and the boys make an R-rated pregnancy comedy, they call it “Knocked Up.” But when “Broad City” co-creator Ilana Glazer and stand-up comic Michelle Buteau try their hand at the same subject, the every-bit-as-raunchy result comes with a far classier title: “Babes.”
That pun is just one of the movie’s many acts of irreverent reclamation, as helmer Pamela Adlon — making a confident switch to feature directing after seminal small-screen contributions to “Louie” and “Better Things” — and her stars de-objectify a label used by dudes, slapping it on themselves. The cheeky term applies to both lifelong amigas Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Buteau) and the infants they spend most of the movie incubating. These babes are making babies, and you might be surprised just how much comedy there is still to be milked from that seemingly universal (but still widely underexamined) subject.

In the trailer for Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway portrays a 40-year-old single mom who gets to live out a teenage girl’s dream: embarking on a whirlwind romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of the world’s hottest boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine. Billie Eilish left Melissa McCarthy with a gift when they presented an award together at the 2024 SAG Awards – an autograph on her face!
The 22-year-old “What Was I Made For” singer was reminded that she’d already met the 53-year-old Bridesmaids actress several times when they took the stage on Saturday (February 24) to present the award for Female Actor in a Comedy.
Melissa asked Billie for an autograph, and she refused to sign the actress’ dress because she didn’t want to “ruin it.” However, she had no qualms about taking a permanent marker to her forehead.
Head inside to watch the funny clip…
“I thought you were going to be like, ‘I don’t want to ruin your pretty face,’” Melissa pointed out as Billie uncapped the marker and went to work. Billie even put her hand over her mouth to keep her silent as she finished her autograph.

Mo’Nique delivered a viral interview on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast that garnered nearly five million views in 24 hours due to the Oscar-winning comedian’s blunt comments while talking about previous public spats with the likes of Tyler Perry, Netflix, Oprah Winfrey and more. In one of the podcast’s most quoted moments, Mo’Nique declared that her career might’ve been as successful as that of fellow comic Melissa McCarthy had she been given equal opportunities as her white contemporaries.
“If I was a white woman, do you know what my name would be? Melissa McCarthy,” Mo’Nique told host Shannon Sharpe. “If I was a white woman, my name would be Melissa McCarthy. Same track record! Five-year sitcom in syndication. The opportunities are not the same.”
McCarthy starred on the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly” for six seasons and won an Emmy for outstanding actress in a comedy series.

Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig) as she endeavours to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots,...

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.
1. He had the most theatrical performance of the bunch.
And that’s an understatement. In addition to Depp,...

Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss will star in David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers.” They join the previously announced Ben Stiller, who will play a work-obsessed man who travels to rural Ohio to look after his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident.
Heidecker will play a local deputy, Patterson has been cast as an orphan profiteer, Huss portrays an eccentric empty-nester millionaire and Cardellini takes on the role of a social worker who helps Stiller’s character on his journey to find a home for the boys. The film is based on a script by Leland Douglas and was developed by Rough House Pictures.
Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, Red Hour Films’ Stiller and John Lesher, and Rough House Pictures’ Nate Meyer are producing. Rivulet fully financed the film, which recently wrapped production outside of Cincinnati.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all ragging on the millennial cohort for youthful foibles like excess avocado consumption and crushing student debt accrual. But time, with its trademark humorlessness, has marched on and suddenly, the self-same kids who coined “adulting” to hashtag their Insta stories about that time they put up a shelf, are discovering how much less fun it is to be adult-ed — ready or not.
In the enjoyably salty-till-it-gets-too-sweet “Scrambled,” Nellie is definitely in the “not” category, but that doesn’t matter to her ovaries. At 34, they’re starting to slow down their egg production, forcing hard-partying, sexually adventurous Nellie, whose journey to date has been an exercise in life-decision-making avoidance, to consider her options. When exactly should you let go of the child inside you, in order to embrace the possibility of having a child inside you?
This is fertile territory into which McKendrick implants a zingy,...

Exclusive: Veteran creative entertainment and marketing executive Chris Greenleaf on Monday announced the launch of Pfm Entertainment Group, a new production company focused on high-concept projects for film and TV.
Greenleaf’s goal with the company is to put out content that’s irreverent, emotionally engaging, and filled with “pure f**king magic,” for which the letters in the Pfm name stand. In a statement on the company’s launch, he shared, “After the birth of my son and with everything that’s going on all around us every day, I wanted my legacy to him to be a world filled with a lot more laughter and that’s the mission statement of Pfmeg.”
Pfm Entertainment Group opens for business with a robust pipeline of projects in various stages of development: some, conceived and written by Greenleaf; others, based on original IP from a diverse set of voices. Already, the...

Just consider us Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) to Doug Liman’s John Dalton (Patrick Swayze). Get your popcorn ready.
All IndieWire needed was a two-minute, 48-second trailer to declare the director 100 percent right about his “Road House” remake being tailor-made for movie theaters. Liman’s larger point, presented in a first-person essay on Deadline touting the importance of theatrical, is also correct — but it seems to be especially accurate for this film, which he’s already touted as possibly his best effort to date.
The trailer, released on Thursday, opens with a many-on-1 (the one is protagonist Jake Gyllenhaal) parking lot brawl. It then takes it to the cage; some of the matches are sanctioned, others are definitely not. Later comes the many bar fights, some gunplay, an alligator attack, a high-speed Ferrari chase, arson, a head-on boat collision, and Conor McGregor going nutso with a golf club.
