More background fluff from the streamer, this time from Mean Girls director Mark Waters with a splashy Thailand location
Despite experience mostly insisting caution, certain markers still allow one to naively daydream that a new Netflix comedy might be worth more than a background half-watch while ironing. A big name, an experienced writer, a genuine studio-trained director, some substantive source material, anything to allow us to glide on the brief hope that we’re not in hammy, Hallmark-adjacent territory.
This thinking sometimes works – 2019’s Let It Snow was based on a solid YA novel, 2021’s Moxie had Amy Poehler in front of and behind the camera, this year’s Players benefited from the considerable charm of star Gina Rodriguez – but it too often makes precious little difference. For Mother’s Day in the US, the streamer has Mother of the Bride, a breezy comedy that arrives from director Mark Waters,...

Brent Montgomery’s media company Wheelhouse has secured its first outside round of funding, landing a minority investment from former Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes’ investment firm Alignment Growth.
As part of the transaction, Bewkes — who founded Alignment with Alex Iosilevich and Kevin Tsujihara — will be joining Wheelhouse’s board of directors.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Wheelhouse says the size of the investment from Alignment “will enable Wheelhouse to build an infrastructure that attracts industry-leading talent and accelerates growth via strategic acquisitions.”
Founded in 2018 by Montgomery, who was then coming off his sale of Leftfield Entertainment to ITV in 2014, and Jimmy Kimmel, Wheelhouse assets currently include Spoke Studios, Campfire, Butternut, Wheelhouse UK and DNA. Additionally, Wheelhouse has production partnerships with Kimmel’s Kimmelot and celebrity chef David Chang’s Majordomo Media.

Netflix debuted the sixth season of Love Is Blind on Valentine’s Day, and the show captured a lot of viewers’ hearts — or at least their eyes.
The dating show easily led Nielsen’s original streaming series rankings for Feb. 12-18, drawing 907 million minutes of viewing time in the United States. It also finished third overall, behind library shows Bluey (1.17 billion minutes on Disney+) and Young Sheldon (1 billion on Netflix and Max). Those two swapped spots from the previous week.
Netflix’s romance One Day had 460 million minutes of watch time, a healthy 55 percent improvement over its opening. Apple TV+’s World War II drama Masters of the Air hit the rankings for the first time with 243 million minutes, with three fourths of that total coming from the episode that premiered Feb. 16.
Oppenheimer also had its streaming premiere on Peacock that week, leading the movies top 10 with 612 million minutes of watch time.

Helldivers 2 is no doubt an excellent game; the proof is in the pudding as the game continues to grow in popularity. There are a number of things that have attracted such a large player base towards this title; one of those things is the constant input from developers who make sure this game continues to be a pleasant experience for its fans.
Arrowhead Game Studios, the developer of Helldivers 2, and especially its creative director and CEO, Johan Pilestedt, have been at the forefront. They have made sure every problem is fixed, and they have assured that all issues gamers have are heard. He even replies to some of the queries. This process of staying in touch with their fans has assured that gamers never face any issues. But it looks like this company has met its first relentless, undefeatable enemy.

Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft,...

Through Sunday, “Mean Girls” was the highest-grossing domestic film two months into 2024.
Its total is $15 million less than, though still quite close to, the longer-running “Anyone but You” (Sony), similarly with significant female appeal. Meanwhile, little is more normal than a new original Tyler Perry film placing immediately at #1 on Netflix. “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland as an attorney who takes on a tough murder defense to enhance her chances at partnership at her firm, is the hyphenate’s first film since 2022 and third consecutive production for the streamer.

“Love Is Blind” came back for Valentine’s Day, and so did the viewers. Season 6 of the hit reality dating show debuted in the second position of Netflix’s weekly streaming rankings, bringing in 6.3 million views in the first five days of availability of Episodes 1-6. The series will likely remain near the top of the chart in the coming weeks, as Netflix will continue dropping episodes on Wednesdays.
The only TV title to beat “Love Is Blind” was romantic limited series “One Day.” After debuting in third place with 5.3 million views in its first four days on Netflix, the series rose to No. 1 for the week of Feb. 12-18 with 9.9 million views.
After three weeks in the top spot, “Griselda” landed at No. 3 with 5.8 million views between Feb. 12 and 18. It was followed by “The Tourist” Season 1, which is now enjoying its third week on the Netflix Top 10. (The season...

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

Liza Koshy is continuing her transition from internet standout to Hollywood actor. Her latest film role comes in Players, a romantic comedy that is now available to stream on Netflix.
Players stars Gina Rodriguez as a sportswriter who enjoys setting up hookups for her friends, including a co-worker portrayed by Koshy. Hijinks ensue when Mack falls for one of her “targets” and must decide how to pursue him. Beyond Rodriguez and Koshy, the film’s cast also includes Damon Wayans Jr. and Tom Ellis.
Koshy revealed her role in Players in June 2021, nearly three years before the film’s eventual release date. At the time, Koshy’s strong following on platforms like YouTube (where she currently has nearly 17 million subscribers) made her a popular choice for brand collabs and hosting gigs at events like the Met Gala and New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

Gina Rodriguez brings the charm as a sports fanatic dating in Brooklyn in an improvement on streaming romcom fare
Ever since Netflix declared the return of the moribund studio romcom with its “Summer of Love” in 2018, the company has churned out a steady stream of formulaic – or, to quote the burn in many a review, “algorithmic” – at-home fare. The genre didn’t so much reboot as mutate for a new streaming home with a now distinctive style: baseline watchable, sheen-y, disposable. I’ve reviewed probably a dozen of them and can only recall a handful. The few that have stuck – To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Set It Up – have endured in large part because of its stars’ charisma, without which a romcom has little hope. Such was the case with 2019’s Someone Great, a middling movie elevated to memorable by the breezy charm of Gina Rodriguez.

At 48, Killer Mike won three rap Grammys on Sunday and told the audience: “You cannot tell me you get too old. You cannot tell me it’s too late.”
Mike won best rap album for Michael, while his song “Scientists and Engineers” won best rap performance and best rap song. On Twitter, the Recording Academy accidentally announced that Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” won best rap song, though it went to Michael‘s track, which features Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.
“For all the people out there that think you get too old to rap, bullshit. I don’t give a damn if you’re 78 rapping about how many gals you got in the nursing home, make sure we keep hip-hop alive,” he said during the Grammys pre-show held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The official ceremony will air later from the Crypto.

Jim Carrey wanted to perform from a very young age and when he was just 10 years old wrote to “The Carol Burnett Show” offering his services as an impressionist. While his request was politely declined it would only be another decade before he was all over television with his antic comedic act. He ultimately achieved the brass ring for comedians of this era when he got to appear on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.” In 1984 the 22-year-old Carrey was cast as the lead in a TV series called “The Duck Factory” which was supposed to be a star-making vehicle for the actor. Despite its prime placement on NBC’s Thursday night lineup the show quickly failed. Carrey bounced back with small other roles including the lead in the film “Once Bitten” which was a mild box office hit in 1985.

"It was never about the plays, it was about being with the people who 'get' you." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a raunchy New York City romantic comedy film called Players, the latest from filmmaker Trish Sie. It’s a slow year for hip-hop so far, especially on the charts. Big names like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B, and Jay-Z haven’t released new music in 2023, other icons like Nicki Minaj seem to be prepping for Q4 releases, and so far there’s just not been a lot of hip-hop topping the charts. In fact, no number-one song this year has been by a hip-hop artist. Even worse, there has not even been a number-one album by a rapper this year either, with releases from high-profile names like Gunna and Lil Durk failing to reach the top spot. The silver lining is that a weak year for rap overall means that the Grammys’ rap categories might be more fun than ever, with no boring sweeps or predictably locked categories in sight.

Hip-hop heiress Coi Leray had a crossover moment with “Players,” a boastful track that uses the synth arpeggios that streaked across the pioneering Grandmaster Flash cut “The Message” to flip the script 2023-style: “Girls is players too,” Leray declares amidst boasts about her womanly prowess and warnings to any prospective suitors whose bank accounts might not be up to snuff. Leray’s posturing and the immediately identifiable sample helped propel “Players” to the top ten of the Hot 100.
