The Treasure
claudio_carvalho15 December 2021
A man is found dead as if he committed suicide in an old mansion. Soon the CBI learns that the man is the architect Alan Foster, who bought the mansion from the owner Victoria Abner. They interview his wife Lillian Foster and learn that the mansion had huge tax debts and the fame of being haunted. Further, Victoria accused Alan of stealing her mansion after he paid the debts. Meanwhile, Patrick visits the store of Philip Raimey, who discloses stories about the mansion including a hidden treasure and brings all the suspects to the mansion to find the killer.

"Red Scare" is a funny and entertaining episode of "The Mentalist". The con-artist Patrick Jane soon discloses the ghost story, and finally Rigsby declares to Van Pelt. My vote is eight.

Warning: Spoilers
Some of these episodes seem to be right out of the old Scooby Doo cartoons with a murder and Sherlockian angle. The agents and Jane are those "meddlin' kids," and the villain is close to the case, yet seemingly harmless at first. This one even had a fake ghost, a house rigged up for haunting, and a hidden treasure. I mean, the only things missing were the villain wearing a disguise and the nefarious "meddlin' kids" speech about how he'd have gotten away with it, except for them, at the end. This is more observation than criticism, because it's still entertaining.

Spoiler!

Finally we see some progress on the "will they or won't they" cheesy romance side story.

Drew will likely never be convicted
CrimeDrama121 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the worst mistake I have ever seen in a crime drama, dating back to "Starsky and Hutch"

Lisbon and Jane catch a suspect red-handed and get a confession but no one on the show realized it was coerced before filming concluded? INADMISSIBLE! Lisbon holds Drew at gunpoint, never issues a Miranda Warning (Drew's rights) but asks for his confession ("Was it just for the money?"), which he gives in full detail! I would have sang too! If Drew has a good lawyer, nothing that happened in that house that night will likely be admissible in court. Sure, Jane might lie to protect Lisbon but I don't see both of them lying on the witness stand. I have never seen a crime drama with a scene like this. A police officer who seems to think that it's OK to point their gun at the suspect and ask for a confession, which doesn't take place at a police station so there's no assumed Miranda Warning. Lisbon would have to lower her gun AND issue a Miranda Warning in order to use the confession. It feels like everyone from the writers, producers, director, editor and actors all missed this. But, how? It makes me wonder if the writers, and maybe others, are really only interested in the Red John storyline and everything else is mailed in. Unbelievable.
