Great Premise But Falls A Bit At End
ccthemovieman-19 May 2011
Warning: Spoilers
We pick up where last season ended - a dramatic drive-by shooting at a local pub where the CSI gang is having a little memorial tribute to their fallen comrade, "Jessica Angell," who had been killed in that last season's final episode.

We quickly discover that the shooting injured another of the CSI's, this one being series regular "Danny" (Carmine Giovinazzo). A month has gone by and poor Danny is still in a wheelchair with, as we learn a 10 percent chance of regaining the use of his legs.

Soon a couple more of these drive-by shootings occur - apparently for no reason than to get the city scared and bullet went over the heads of crowds.

Thus, the job of finding this idiots, and why they are doing this is not only the job of Mac and his CSI, but a personal assignment because of Danny's situation.

This episode was riveting in the first half and had a good premise, the ending was kind of disappointing, almost anti-climactic after what it promised early on.

Well designed procedural investigation, captivating chaotic story, some inspiring characters, convincing acting and fascinating teamwork
igoatabase22 March 2010
I discovered the show with Death House, the 10th episode. In my review I mentioned how impressed I was by the puzzling story, polished investigation and of course Gary Sinise convincing performance as Mac. However it took me a while to decide whether or not its other episodes deserved my attention. Indeed I worried that its episodic format would be as disappointing as in other shows like Castle for example. Moreover in the last what save some episodes are the irresistible protagonists, Kate and Castle, when even if I liked Mac I didn't relate to him nor find the other characters really interesting. Well now that I've seen this pilot I admit that designing a show around procedural investigations is not necessarily a mistake.

First the story was captivating and I really like how the characters seemed in distress and worried. Sinise was excellent as an obsessed Mac because his after shooting investigation had leaded him nowhere. Moreover it's like if the team had lost faith when people should help each other when chaos takes over. But hopefully his partners were there to remind him that he wasn't alone. In fact a new character triggered a chain of events that motivated them to finally catch the shooters. So the story was intriguing and inspiring. I specially felt for the guy in the wheelchair because the actor did a great job. You could feel how desperate he was and the situation wasn't easy for his girlfriend either. Did they find the strength to go on or things got worse ?

Beside the story and character development I was really impressed by how the investigation was written and designed. In Death House I noticed the gadgets but this time it was more about the patterns, clues and all these tiny details that could help them solve the case. From bloodstain pattern analysis, that reminded me of Dexter, to crime and shooting reconstructions I kept thinking how cool and smart it was. In fact the tracking was fascinating and I instantly that it would be interesting to work for them. It's amazing and inspiring what their heterogeneous and complementary skills allowed them to achieve. Mac's female partner knife theory was specially creative and the flashbacks were very helpful to better picture what happened because some explanations were technical.

All these great elements contributed to make this pilot a success. The story itself wasn't spectacular but it was twisted enough and well written. With such a strong foundation it's not surprising the show reached its 6th season. And with more original scripts, apparently delivered in some episodes, it should definitely be a must watch.

Waste of life
courtney-alicia9 May 2013
This episode is horrible. The dialog is canned and predictable. Half of the episode is completely predictable and the other half is not only predictable but corny as well. Complete waste of time of my life. Unfortunately the post requires 10 lines of text which this episode doesn't even deserve. There's nothing to say about this episode other than it completely SUCKS and is a complete disappointment and wast of time of my life and I'd really like someone to be able to give me that hour of my life back so I could spend it on something better than watching this crap episode. Again, the review requires 10 lines of text and for some reason this post is not meeting the requirement. Hopefully this will fix it.

Why, why, WHY?!
LoveIsAStateOfMind28 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I can't get over the Adam/Stella. I don't care if it was only for the briefest of seconds and that it might have been a one time thing induced by grief. I don't care if it is never mentioned again. IT WAS STILL THERE. ON MY SCREEN. IN MY MIND.

Seriously I am this close to just not putting myself through the torture of being a fan of this show. I mean gradually they're tainting my characters with a big fat ugly red cross. Adam for being Adam, Danny for the (yeah, we don't need to go into that), Lindsay for taking Danny back so easy and now Stella. Ew Ew Ew Ew EWWWWWWWWW. And yes apparently they 'dealt' with it but honest to God if there isn't a bigger follow-up or fallout then why do it in the first place???!! And then even if it is dealt with and filed away I still have to expect it being dug up at a later date and again with the waiting and cringing and OH DEAR GOD I CANNOT HANDLE THIS. Quite frankly there is only one thing that can top this and that is if you tell me that Lindsay's baby is in fact Mac's.

Moving on ......I love the way they filmed the opening scene with the shattering of the glass and the spilling of the drinks in slow motion etc.

The whole case? It had the whole feel of the cabbie killer with the FEAR and TERRORISING THE CITY. And I don't know why but somehow in my mind I always thought that the shooting would somehow be related to the finale's case and Angell's death etc.

The new girl? God she got annoying really quickly. Ugh. They killed off Angell and used the budget to hire her? STILL yes yes let her take Adam's job please. If I had to choose between the two of them it would be no contest at the moment.

Also, I swear there weren't that many people in the bar when the shooting happened in the finale? Wasn't it practically empty apart from the team.

Hawkes and the new EDNA gadget thingy? Oh please. Unnecessary flashy gadget thing. See, I'm clearly gravitating to shows like The Mentalist and Castle where they solve the cases unorthodoxly and yet paradoxically with some old-fashioned police work.

Lindsay, I want to marry you. Everything that came out of your mouth this episode was perfect. Consider yourself redeemed.

I guess I should mention something about Flack but since the writers to glance over his grief in a blink of an eye I think I can too (I'm guessing some fallout in the next couple of episodes?). If the writers wanted to have the 'sex' ingredient to make an explosive premiere, it would have made FAR more sense to have shown a bed scene (although I would have shaken my head sadly) with Flack in it RATHER THAN ADAM/STELLA.
