Billie Eilish premiered a pointed new song, “TV,” that appeared to include references to the impending overturn of Roe v. Wade, the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, and more. Eilish debuted the song during her show in Manchester, England, last night, June 7.
On “TV,” Eilish is accompanied by her brother and collaborator Finneas on acoustic guitar as she descends into a thick media haze that feels at once distant but still connected to the real world. “I”ll but on Survivor just to watch somebody suffer,” she sings in the first verse,...

Best New Artist is always a controversial category at the Grammys. The category tends to have a problem choosing great nominees (and winners) that have a long shelf life in the popular consciousness. However, you’ve gotta give it to the Grammys for their savvy choices sometimes, and one of those times was with the Best New Artist class of 2020. From indie darlings to diamond-certified superstars, that lineup is exactly what a Bna lineup should be — and those artists are coming once again.

The Grammys took place in April, but we might not be done with music award winners just yet. Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Sheryl Crow, and The Beatles are the subjects of documentary programs that are eligible for this year’s Emmys. Will they be recognized by the TV academy just like they have been by the Recording Academy?
Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” didn’t win any Grammys, alas, despite its seven nominations including Album of the Year. But her Disney+ special “Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles” is eligible for Emmys and is being submitted for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special, as well as for its music direction, cinematography, and sound mixing. However, Eilish is not a credited producer or music director on “Love Letter,” so she herself won’t take home an Emmy if it wins its top category. Alas, the Grammy and Oscar winner...

Billie Eilish and Finneas give David Letterman a lesson in the intricacies of vocal production in a clip from Eilish’s episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which premiered today, May 20, on Netflix.
In the clip, Eilish explains that she crafts her studio vocals through a process called “comping”: Rather than just singing the song all the way through and using that, Eilish records a ton of takes and “makes sure there’s something usable” in each one for every part of the song. After all the takes are laid down,...

Disney Original Documentary and Disney+ have landed the Elton John documentary “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and The Years That Made His Legend,” a project intended as a capstone for the rockstar’s five-decade career.
David Furnish, Elton John’s longtime partner, will direct the documentary alongside R.J. The film will be centered around John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, featuring exclusive interviews and footage from the musician’s final concerts, along with never-before-seen footage and photos from throughout his career.

Billie Eilish has sway. During her second weekend headlining Coachella on April 23, the singer convinced Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams to bring "Misery Business" out of retirement. In addition to performing an acoustic rendition of the band's pop-punk anthem, the two also closed the set with Eilish's freight train of a single, "Happier Than Ever."
Though the song is one of the band's most recognizable, Paramore announced their decision to no longer perform "Misery Business" at a Nashville concert in 2018. "We wrote a song that now, as a 29-year-old woman, I don't know that I'd use the same language," Williams said, referring to the lyric "Once a wh*re, you're nothing more / I'm sorry, that'll never change." She added at the time, "Calling someone a wh*re isn't very cool."

It took three years for music to return to Indio’s Empire Polo Club. But Covid seemed to be an afterthought this past weekend as fans flocked to each Coachella stage, mostly unmasked. Overall, the fest’s 2022 edition served as an exciting three-day celebration of live music’s resurgence, with Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and Swedish House Mafia alongside the Weeknd topping the bill. (Kanye West’s last-minute drop-off went seemingly unnoticed.)
History was made throughout the weekend, as Eilish became the youngest headliner in history, and Pabllo Vittar the first drag queen to perform.

Is it time for Finneas‘s Grammy breakthrough? He’s already an eight-time Grammy winner, but most of those trophies have been for his producing and songwriting work on his sister Billie Eilish‘s recordings. This year was the first time he earned a nomination as a recording artist in his own right: Best New Artist, which ultimately went to Olivia Rodrigo. The 2022 Grammys just happened on April 3, honoring the best in music from September 2020 through September 2021. The 2022 Grammys were quite star-packed, with winners ranging from pop sensations Olivia Rodrigo and Doja Cat to country music superstar Chris Stapleton. However, the final award of the night was a surprise to many when Lenny Kravitz announced that the winner of Album of the Year was none other than Jon Batiste for his eclectic album “We Are.” You might remember Batiste’s name as the top nominee this year, earning an impressive set of 11 nominations including Record and Album of the Year. So Batiste’s win might have come out of nowhere to many people, but if you dig deeper, it’s actually not too hard to explain.
The first thing that Batiste had as an advantage was his cross-genre appeal. His 11 nominations were spread across many different fields. From jazz to classical music to R&b and even American roots, Batiste was known and embraced by peers from multiple genres,...

Even the most ardent Grammy haters would have to admit that the ceremony at least has an ethos: The alternate-universe vision of current popular music it presents is almost its own radio format, where almost everything is more classicist, melodic, and live-instrument-driven than our unfiltered real world. (The choices for awards are, as always, another, much-worse story, and continue — in many categories — to be unabashedly bonkers.) This year, the performances were almost uniformly excellent (depending on your tastes, Chris Stapleton and Carrie Underwood were arguably kinda mid) — so the real...

The Grammys adore Bruno Mars. After the 2022 Grammys aired on Sunday night, April 3, his total awards haul over the course of his career rose to 15. The very first song he released with collaborator Anderson Paak as Silk Sonic, “Leave the Door Open,” swept all four of its nominations including Record of the Year, which means that Mars has now tied Paul Simon‘s record as the most awarded artist in the category.
Simon won two Record of the Year titles as one half of a music duo, just as Mars did on April 3. Simon and Garfunkel prevailed for “Mrs. Robinson” (1969) and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1971). And then Simon won solo for “Graceland” (1988).

At the end of a Grammy night full of close races and big surprises, Jon Batiste achieved one of the biggest upsets, claiming Album of the Year for “We Are.” We had ranked him fifth in our racetrack odds behind Billie Eilish (“Happier Than Ever”), Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga (“Love for Sale“), Olivia Rodrigo (“Sour”), and H.E.R. (“Back of My Mind”). In hindsight it seems silly to be surprised since he came in with the most overall nominations (11), but in claiming top honors he becomes the first Black artist to win the category in 14 years.

It may be surprising that Black artists have had such a long Album of the Year drought given the nominations for musicians like Kendrick Lamar, Beyonce, Lil Nas X, H.E.R., The Weeknd, Childish Gambino, Rihanna, and Frank Ocean, just to name a few from the past decade.

The 2022 Grammy Awards broadcast wrapped up with an upset victory of sorts, with Jon Batiste beating out the likes of Taylor Swift and Kanye west to take home Album of the Year for his excellent “We Are.”
That was his fifth win of the night, following four wins during the “Premiere Ceremony,” where all of the awards not deemed cool enough for television were handed out, hosted by the always wonderful Levar Burton.
Batiste also accomplished a rather ignominious milestone for the Grammy Awards themselves: He’s the first Black artist to win Album of the Year since Herbie Hancock back in 2008. You read that right: It’s literally been 14 years and 3 presidents since the Academy recognized the work of Black artists with this honor. And in case you’re wondering, the only nonwhite artist to win Best Album during that time was Bruno Mars in 2018.

Billie Eilish brought down the house at the 2022 Grammys on April 3. The singer performed "Happier Than Ever" alongside her brother Finneas. Eilish sang inside an upside-down living room, and as she stood on the ceiling, it was flooded with water. She then left the room and met Finneas on top of the structure, where he was playing guitar. As they rocked out, a thundering rain storm covered them.
During her performance, Eilish wore a tribute shirt honoring Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins died on March 25 at the age of 50.
Eilish is nominated for seven awards at this year's ceremony. Meanwhile, Finneas was up for best new artist, which was a little ironic since he's already won eight Grammys with his sister. The duo also just scored their first Oscar on March 27 for their James Bond song, "No Time to Die."

Billie Eilish paid tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins during her performance at the 2022 Grammys. After walking the red carpet in a Rick Owens trench coat, she changed outfits and took the stage wearing a graphic T-shirt with the musician's face on it. Custom-made by fashion designer Willy Chavarria, the shirt was front and center as Eilish sang her hit song "Happier Than Ever" alongside her brother, Finneas - she made sure to hold it out for the cameras at the end of the performance.
Hawkins died unexpectedly at age 50 on March 25. During an interview before the 2021 Oscars two days later, Eilish expressed grief over his death, telling "Access Hollywood," "It was incredibly heartbreaking. It was right before we went on stage. And we got the news, and it really, really tore us all apart. It's horribly, horribly tragic." Finneas added, "We were admirers of his work...

The Grammys always pay tribute to the great musicians who died in the past year, but one tribute hit especially hard this year because the pain is still so fresh: the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Ahead of the annual “In Memoriam” segment, Grammys host Trevor Noah took to the stage on Sunday to celebrate the life of Hawkins, who passed away suddenly last week at the age of 50. “Our thoughts go out to Taylor’s family, his friends, the Foo Fighter family and all of their fans around the globe,” Noah said. Grammys host Trevor Noah kicked off a video tribute to recently-deceased Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins with the following words:
“This was the moment in the show when I was supposed to be introducing the Foo Fighters. We would have been celebrating with them as they won three Grammy awards earlier today. But they, of course, are not here due to the passing of their legendary drummer, Taylor Hawkins. Our thoughts go out to Taylor’s family, his friends, his Foo Fighter family and all his fans.”
Then he rolled an extensive montage of Hawkins at work set to the Foos’ There Goes My Hero. That led directly into the show’s traditional In Memoriam tribute.
It wasn’t the only reference to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer during the show.
Earlier in the night, Billie Eilish wore a t shirt featuring Hawkins’ likeness as she performed “Happier Than Ever.

Taylor Hawkins' presence was felt at the 2022 Grammy Awards. Billie Eilish paid tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer at the ceremony, appearing onstage to perform her song "Happier Than Ever" in a shirt with Hawkins' face. As she rounded out her performance with her brother, Grammy nominee Finneas, by her side, she tugged the shirt as a reminder of Hawkins' death. Hawkins abruptly passed at the age of 50 on March 25. The drummer was staying at a hotel in Chapinero, a locality of the Colombian capital of Bogota, at the time of his passing. Billie Eilish was seeming Grammy-er than ever at Sunday night’s awards show, being a major presence on the telecast for the third year running in her young life. Besides being nominated for seven awards, she performed the song that was responsible for several of those noms, the title track from her “Happier Than Ever” album.
Starting out in an upside down house, Eilish and her brother Finneas then made their way to the roof to rock out in the rain, with Eilish sporting a Taylor Hawkins shirt by Willy Chavarria. The Foo Fighters drummer died on March 25 at age 50.
It’s a song that should certainly be up for “most extreme dynamics of the year,” if there were such a category, since it shows off the full range of what Eilish can do vocally and mood-wise, going from a whisper to full-on screamo-rock.

Olivia Rodrigo would appear to be close to a shoo-in for several Grammys, but when it comes to what’s generally considered the most prestigious prize, album of the year, there’s a serious competitor packing heat, and he’s old enough to be her grandfather’s grandfather.
Rodrigo has a decent shot at winning the Grammys’ quadruple crown, for album, record, song and new artist of the year, just as another teen, Billie Eilish, did two years ago. Tony Bennett is the likeliest spoiler, however, of the 19-year-old’s shot at grabbing all the Grammy glory her first time out of the gate. It’s the 95-year-old legend’s last time in contention. His last recorded hurrah, a collaboration with Lady Gaga, wouldn’t exactly go down as the most au courant album winner ever, but it would prompt a lot of “awwwws” if it gives him one last...

Just one week after winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, “Summer of Soul” is now in the hunt to add a Grammy to its ever-growing awards collection. It competes in the category of Best Music Film against fellow Grammy nominees “Bo Burnham: Inside,” Billie Eilish‘s “Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter To Los Angeles,” David Byrne‘s “American Utopia” and Jimi Hendrix‘s “Music, Money, Madness … Jimi Hendrix In Maui.” According to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, “Summer of Soul” is the front-runner to prevail at the 2022 Grammys, but Burnham is hot on its heels.
“Summer of Soul’s” Grammy-nominated producers are the same as those who just took home the Academy Award: Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein. “This is such a stunning moment for me right now,” Questlove said at the Oscar podium last Sunday (watch below). “But this is not about me.

The Grammys love Bruno Mars. He has won 11 times over the course of his career, and now he has teamed up with fellow Grammy champ Anderson Paak to form the duo Silk Sonic. The very first song they released together, “Leave the Door Open,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned them four Grammy nominations including Record of the Year. If they win that award, Mars will tie Paul Simon‘s record as the most awarded artist in the category.
Simon won two of his Record of the Year titles as one half of a music duo, just as Mars might this Sunday night. Simon and Garfunkel prevailed for “Mrs. Robinson” (1969) and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1971). And then Simon won solo for “Graceland” (1988).

For any entertainer, you might say that winning an Oscar is kind of a big deal, and the Academy Awards are usually the grand finale of a long awards season. But several individuals who won Oscars on March 27 could collect more hardware at the Grammys seven days later on April 3.
Most obvious among those are Billie Eilish and Finneas. The siblings won Best Original Song for their title theme from the James Bond film “No Time to Die.” They’ve already earned a couple armfuls of Grammys for their work over the last two years, including Best Visual Media Song last year for “No Time to Die.” This year they’re up for several more, including Album of the Year for Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” and Record and Song of the Year for the title song. One of the top honors a musician can get from their industry peers is the Grammy for Album of the Year. Awarded to iconic albums throughout history like The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours,” Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” and Adele’s “21,” the category is a way of preserving for posterity excellent albums that were the year’s best of the best. This year 10 albums are gunning for a chance to take the prestigious honor, but only one will ultimately be crowned as the Album of the Year.
