Quebec’s recent domestic box office charmers “One Summer” and “Ru” lead Canada’s diverse acquisition slate of 17 features — many coming off strong, award-speckled festival runs — screening for buyers at the Berlinale’s European Film Market.
More than half the 20 Canadian titles screening across the EFM and festival are Quebec productions, a ratio that reflects the resilience of the province’s film industry, not to mention the next wave of filmmaking talent and the return of Quebec audiences to cinemas.
“Ru,” an adaptation of Vietnamese-born Canadian novelist Kim Thúy’s prize-winning, widely translated 2009 novel, is nearing the $2 million mark in Canada and is the latest in a string of Quebec films to earn more than $1 million at the domestic box office in 2023.

Sarah Drew is headed to Hallmark Movies & Mysteries for an exciting new TV movie.
According to TV Line, the Grey's Anatomy alum will headline Guiding Light.
Drew will star opposite Will & Grace's Eric McCormack, who is set to play the voice of her character's guide dog.
On Guiding Emily, Drew's character's "life veers off course when she becomes permanently blind after an unfortunate rock-climbing accident and struggles to cope with her new reality," the logline teases.
"Meanwhile, a potential guide dog named Garth is also struggling with his rigorous training."
"With the help of Emily's friend Matthew (Blood & Treasure's Antonio Cupo) and Garth's trainer Katie (Altered Carbon's Sharon Taylor), both make headway in their important transitions," the logline continues.

As we gear up for an onslaught of bright and cheery holiday films on the Hallmark Channel, new movie One Summer is a reminder that the network also knows how to pull at heartstrings with real emotion. The latest Hallmark Movies & Mysteries offering, adapted from David Baldacci’s novel of the same name, will have you reaching for your tissues more than once (and that’s not a bad thing!). In the film, we meet grieving widower Jack Armstrong (Sam Page), who we find out miraculously survived a serious illness only to have the love of his life, Lizzie (Amanda Schull), unexpectedly pass away.
