Most of this episode centers around the huge invasion of Saipan, involving almost as many troops they said, as was in the D-Day Normandy invasion. It was said there 800 ships, 1,000 planes and 127,000 ground troops. Wow!
In the battle of the skies over the Pacific, the Americans won this one, big-time. In just eight hours, it was noted on this program, the U.S. shot down 373 Japanese airplanes! In the battle on the island of Saipan, the number of dead and wounded on both sides are staggering. The worst is seeing little kids suffering, totally innocent victims in this war.
Just as bad, and even more horrifying to see, are the suicides off the cliffs of Mapi Point. She show a women jumping and they show some dead bodies below. You see, the Japanese soldiers told the civilians that if the Americans captured them, they would rape, torture and kill all the women and children....and those people believed them.....so 1,000 of them jumped off a high cliff instead. Man, this is just another of the many horrors shown on this new History Channel series.
Meanwhile, in Europe, I was surprised this show spent very little time showing scenes from Omaha and Utah beach, meaning "D-Day." They almost skipped over the actual beach scenes and just told about afterward and the big problem the Allied soldiers had with the hedgerows - thick, tall walls of plant-life which made forward progress very slow and dangerous as German tanks fired away from close by.
