- Patrick's reckless behavior catches up with him when his actions get a case against a hitman thrown out of court and Lisbon on suspension. But when the hitman is shot and killed, he has a shot at redemption.
- Sacramento Assistant DA Kelly Flower is shot dead at home. Her recent cases include that of smuggler Hank Draber. Patrick Jane guesses at first sight contractor Cale Sylvan is a psychopathic serial killer, whose aliases and bank account suggest he got paid for each murder. He devices entrapment which yields trophy proof. But stickler judge Hildred dismisses the case when the defense proves Jane illegally searches Cael's home, rejecting all evidence as a 'poisoned tree'. The team keeps tracking him while Lisbon is suspended. Several surprise crimes follow, including Sylvan's, presumably ordered by his client in the Flower case.—KGF Vissers
- Van Pelt waits in a dark alley outside a bar. A man in a hooded sweatshirt meets her, she recognizes him as "Mr. Black" and starts to hand him an envelope. But he wants to hear what she wants done first. She holds up a picture of Rigsby. "I want you to kill him. How much do you charge?"
36 hours earlier The team arrives at the murder scene of assistant district attorney Kelly Flower. Jane thinks police policy of working harder to solve murders of police, judges or DAs is just revenge. But he's fine with that.
Back at the office, Cho tells Rigsby that Tiffany wants him to call her back, apparently he's been a bad boy. Someone from the DA's office comes by with a list of Kelly's current cases, including the trial of a smuggler named Hank Draber.
Cho and Van Pelt head to the port of Sacramento to talk to him. He meets them with goons and his dear old mom in a wheelchair.
Jane and Lisbon interview Kelly's husband, who's distraught. He said they fought about the house remodel and he went to the movies. His wife was stressed about her "career maker" Draber case.
Cale Sylvan, the house contractor, stops in to say he's leaving. Jane notices he ends up standing in the blood stain on the floor and points it out. Sylvan says "oh." Jane asks some contractor advice and gets a card, then he ends the interview with Mr. Flower.
Outside, Jane declares that Sylvan is a dangerous psychopath who killed Kelly. He's basing this on the fact that a normal person would probably be appalled to be standing in a murder victim's blood stain, but he didn't miss a beat. And now they have his prints on his card.
Jane and Cho talk to Draber, who says killing a prosecutor isn't worth the effort.
Back at the office, Rigsby says Sylvan is linked to four murders and gave a different name for each case. Lisbon says it's not enough to arrest him and sends Cho for surveillance. Jane tags along but gets out of the car.
Rigsby notes that Sylvan's victims were all different ages and races, which is atypical for a serial killer. But put that with the financial records Van Pelt has showing payments and they realize he's a hitman. Jane comes back to the office, but doesn't say where he's been.
There's a web site for one of Sylvan's old identities that says to call "Mr.Black" for odd jobs of any sort.
Cut to Van Pelt showing Mr Black Rigsby's photo. We see it's Sylvan. He says it's $50,000. In the van, Jane tells Van Pelt to ask Sylvan for proof. He pulls a knife on her, but Jane tells her via earpiece to remain calm, it's a test. She passes, and he shows her the video of Kelly being killed.
They arrest him. Jane claims he knew Sylvan would have proof because he's a narcissist.
At the courthouse, Jane's ready to testify, but Lisbon is worried about him getting near "Judge Dread." Jane quickly proves her fears were founded as Sylvan's defense attorney is arguing to exclude the video in part based on the chain of evidence. Jane interrupts, calling her tiresome. The judge fines him.
The defense attorney asks Lisbon if the night of Sylvan's arrest was the first time she saw the murder video. She says yes. The attorney asks if anyone entered Sylvan's apartment on her say so. She says no. The attorney produces a mug from Sylvan's apartment with Jane's prints on it.
Lisbon and the DA Odenthal confer with Jane, who makes up an innocent story about happening by the apartment as we see that he clearly broke in, looked around and had a drink.
They try to defend Jane, but the judge throws everything out and then the case for lack of evidence.
As he leaves, Sylvan tells Jane he'll be seeing him.
Lisbon tries to apologize for Jane, but back in his office Odenthal calls him a menace. He's waving around the murder weapon and Jane cautions him to be careful and Odenthal nonchalantly breaks it down, saying it's not even loaded. Odenthal says when he's DA Jane won't be allowed near cases and Jane notes his ambition.
Jane then tires to defend himself to Hightower, who blames Lisbon for his actions. She says Lisbon is suspended for five days.
Lisbon hands out assignments to the team, who collectively give Jane the cold shoulder.
Jane asks Cho to get coffee. Cho's peeved at him for getting Lisbon in trouble, but he tells him Sylvan's apartment had lots of coffee in it and they're in the best shop near his place.
Sylvan walks in. Jane talks to him, trying his tap on the shoulder, quickie hypnosis trick, to no avail (apparently it doesn't work on psychopaths).
But back at the table, Jane says the hypnosis was a misdirection so he could search his pockets. He reveals what he got: a button, lint and some sand. Kind of anticlimactic.
At the office, Rigsby shows Cho that Sylvan withdraws $2,000 in cash at the end of every month. They think it's rent for a house where he keeps his murder tools.
Van Pelt sees a bag for Abs Gym in the murder video and the decide to check them out. To narrow it down, Cho suggests following Jane's sand and going to gyms near the river.
Cho reminds them to get a warrant if they get an address.
At a house down a country road, Sylvan watches an old movie while a businessman struggles, bound to a table nearby. Sylvan tells the man he shouldn't have embezzled all that money and picks up a giant knife. He's about to kill the man when a smoke bomb comes through the window followed by the CBI team.
Outside, Sylvan is ready to tell the team who hired him when the red laser sight of a rifle trains on Cho's chest. Rigsby pulls him down and Sylvan is shot in the chest.
He's dead.
The next day, search teams find eight bodies buried around his property. The shot that killed Sylvan came from 200 yards away. They wonder how whoever hired him knew he was becoming a liability. Cho realizes Jane is nowhere around.
Grouchy suspended Lisbon meets Jane at the port. He thinks Draber's involved and called her. Jane talks to Draber's mom, as she scratches off lottery tickets from her wheelchair. Draber claims his mom is "soft in the head," but Jane thinks Draber has been checking on her for approval while they've been talking. Jane decides mom's running the whole thing and Draber is the front.
Mom puts down her lottery tickets and gets out of her wheelchair, calling her son stupid and summoning the gun toting goons. Soon, Jane and Lisbon are in a shipping container.
At the office, Rigsby checks that he and Van Pelt are OK. They both claim to have moved on. Cho wonders if anyone's heard from Jane.
In the shipping container, Lisbon realizes Jane called her because he wanted to help her by handing her a big bust. She says she knows one day she'll get fired because of him, but it's OK because they catch bad guys. They hear someone outside and call for help.
The doors open and they're greeted by a young boy and his goat - they're in the middle of a desert.
At the office, they get a call from the Mexican federales about Jane.
In court, Odenthal addresses a jury but a disheveled Jane busts in, wanting an arrest warrant. He answers a cell phone call and racks up more fines irritating the judge until he finally flicks Odenthal in the face ends up arrested for battery.
At the office, Cho has bailed Jane out and Jane's planning to represent himself.
Back in court, Kelly's widow joins Lisbon in the gallery saying that Jane called him. Jane admits tweaking Odenthal in the nose then on his turn to ask questions, he asks the judge and Odenthal if they own guns. The judge says he's a duck hunter and uses a .10 gauge shotgun. Odenthal corrects Jane about the size of the shell.
Jane reminds Odenthal he's good with a gun and he accuses Odenthal of killing Sylvan before he could name him as his client for Kelly's murder. Odenthal refuses to let them search his house and tries to leave. Lisbon arrests him.
Back at HQ, they present Odenthal with his hunting rifle that killed Sylvan. They offer to spare him the death penalty if he confesses to Kelly's murder.
Jane says he realized the Drabers didn't kill Kelly when they didn't kill him and Lisbon, but he thinks they were connected because the case was a "career maker."
Odenthal says that case would have made him next for DA and should have been his. He admits to telling Sylvan's defense attorney to look for Jane's meddling in the case.
Jane and Lisbon visit Hightower. She reviews their various infractions, then says everything's OK. They busted a crooked DA and solved the murder of one of their own. Lisbon's off suspension but Jane owes the court $16,000 in fines.
