- The beginning of the end is triggered when Walternate finds a way to wreak havoc "over here" - putting both universes in jeopardy.
- Using Henry's blood, Walternate activates the doomsday machine to create consuming vortices in the prime universe, a prelude to its annihilation. In response, Peter accepts his apparent destiny and prepares to enter the doomsday machine - the only way where he might switch it off and save the prime universe - but encounters an unexpected reaction. Meanwhile, Fauxlivia turns rebel to retrieve Peter and possibly change Walternate's mind.—statmanjeff
- In the parallel universe, Brandon isolates Olivia's DNA from Henry's blood and uses it to activate the doomsday machine. The effect is destruction in several areas in our universe. Olivia tries to bring Peter to her universe to stop Walternate but she fails. Meanwhile Peter convinces Walter that he might be capable to turn off the machine and he does not succeed in his intent.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- The Other Side
Walternate pays Brandon a visit in the lab. He reports they stripped Peter's genetic profile from Olivia's baby's DNA, which they think might be enough to activate the Doomsday device.
Brandon is fired up to think they're saving their world, but Watlernate feels the weight of responsibility of destroying another world.
Our Side, Accord, New York A man checks on his flock of sheep and finds them freaking out about something. Rich calls Joe to come check them out.
On the drive there, Joe sees a massive swarm of locusts flying at him. They splatter on his windshield. Reaching Rich, he jokes that it's like the apocalypse. They look up and see something and are blasted with a bright light.
At the bowling alley with Sam Weiss, the mystical guy with all the answers who counsels Olivia. He notices the bowling balls clacking together and goes to a locker in the back. He takes out a perpetual motion machine (the thing with five metal balls on wires that knocks one ball off at each end over and over). It starts moving on its own. He's not pleased.
Olivia wakes up in bed with Peter wrapped around her. She goes into the kitchen and runs into Walter padding around in only his slippers. He tells her he's going to put another fritata in the oven.
It's 6:30 a.m. Olivia gets back in bed and tells Peter his dad it's walking around naked. "Oh yea, it's Tuesday," Peter says. Olivia cuddles up. "I could get used to this," she says as the sun streams in. Both their phones start ringing.
They report to the farm. There's a giant swath of dirt where the sheep used to be. The farmer and ranch hand are gone, as are the 500 sheep.
Walter calls Peter over to examine a chunk of granite, which has quartz crystals, which might hold a charge. Walter tests them and finds a charge. He thinks a vortex sucked them over. They wonder what could trigger it.
Nina comes into the place where the machine is held. She calls Broyles. The machine came on by itself at 6:02 a.m. -- without Peter.
Walter realizes the machine activated minutes after the vortex opened. "If it's the end of the world, this is just the beginning," he says.
Back at Harvard, Peter tries to figure out how the machine started without him. Walter finds the machine magnetic field warped in the same way the typewriter Flauxlivia used did. He says Walternate turned the machine on over there, triggering a response from the machine here. They don't know how he could have done it without Peter.
Astrid reports other events: Massive colonies of bats, mini-quakes, 30 acres of woodland dessicated.
Walter says the events have begun and there's no way to stop them. He thinks Walternate has won.
On the other side, Fauxlivia is interrupted on a walk with her son by a page for a Fringe event on Liberty Island. On the way there, Lincoln reports a class 10 event. He gets a call from Walternate calling it a false alarm, despite dangerously high energy surges.
In his office, Walternate and Brandon find no reverse of the damages to their world.
Fauxlivia pays him a visit. He asks about his grandson Henry. But she's there to talk business. He assures her they've taken precautions. She asks about the tech he had her bring back. She asks if he activated the weapon. He says it's classified.
She reminds him his son is on the other side. "I chose to give up my son so that you could keep yours," he tells her.
In the lab, they try to figure out how to shut the machine off.
Olivia finds a report of an electromagnetic spike at 5:47 a.m. in upstate New York -- before the vortex opened. It's the same way they predict things on the other side. Olivia's off to New York to help Nina look for clues.
Walter suggests encasing the machine in lead. "Walter, we both know there's another way," Peter says. He suggests maybe he can turn it off.
Walter worries he could die. "And if we do nothing, we're all going to die," Peter says. Walter pours Peter a shot. "Give him the keys and save the girl," Walter says. He explains that's what the Observer told him, testing him to see if he'd sacrifice Peter to fix the problems he created.
"I think this is what I'm supposed to do, but I can't do it without your help," Peter says.
Massive Dynamic, New York Olivia arrives. Nina has some thermal detection up and running. They only have enough amber to contain eight or ten events. Nina says the chemists are having trouble finding the key elements.
"It wasn't supposed to be this way," Nina says. She tells Olivia about the bowling alley guy -- Sam Weiss, they guy who counseled Olivia and who William trusted implicitly.
Nina explains the First People books were written by him, but she says he's missing.
Saratoga Springs, New York A young couple makes out in a truck in the woods and then sees sort of Northern Lights in the sky. Nearby, Sam Weiss looks at the same lights through a kind of viewfinder and does an equation. He comes out with zero.
The other side Fauxlivia sings a lullaby to Henry and puts him to sleep. Lincoln waits for her in her living room. She says she has to go alone, but makes sure he'll take Henry to her mom's if she doesn't come back. She thinks Peter is the only one who can change Walternate's mind.
Fauxlivia pulls a gun on Brandon in the lab, demanding he show her how they brought Peter over. Brandon tries to convince her the technology killed a lot of test subjects.
He takes out a case and shows her canisters of something. He says one will get her there and back. She takes two. She knocks him out and runs. She runs through the maze below the island and is chased by guards.
She runs into a gate and takes out one of the canisters. She activates it, but nothing happens.
Olivia checks out an apartment rented by Sam Weiss in Boston. It's completely empty except for a bottle of Brut on the mantel.
At the machine, Peter contemplates the readings.
Walter explains to Broyles that Peter thinks he'll complete the machine's circuit and be able to break it. Broyles asks if he thinks it's a good idea. Walter says his selfishness is kidnapping Peter all those years ago is the reason everything is happening. He has no idea what's going to happen. He says the current is more powerful than anything he's ever seen.
Peter gets suited up. Peter tells Astrid not to worry about calling Olivia, she'll find out soon enough.
Walter squirts eletro-conductive gel on Peter's hands so his hands won't get burnt. Peter assures him he's OK. "I was never good at letting you go," Walter says. "This time you have to," Peter says.
Peter approaches the giant machine, which has a space in the middle for him. He rides a platform up to it.
Astrid, Walter and Broyles watch nervously.
Peter looks at it. He touches it and is immediately blasted across the room. His head slams into the ground.
He's rushed into an ER. Olivia arrives an hour later. Astrid tells him his vitals are stable, no brain trauma, but he won't wake up. Astrid tells her he tried to go into the machine, but it wouldn't let him.
Walter prays in the chapel. He says he was willing to let Peter die, and he's changed. "That should matter," he says. "God, I know my crimes are unforgivable. Punish me, do what you want to me. I beg you, spare our world," he says, kneeling and crying before a cross.
Waiting in the lobby, Olivia notices the light change and goes outside. Sam runs up.
He wants to see the machine. He says she has to trust him. "We don't have a lot of time," he says.
On the other side, Walternate visits Fauxlivia in lock-up. He says he's being pragmatic to let the other side die. He tells her she'll stay locked up for her own good "until this is over."
