There’s No Such Thing as Zombies isn’t so much a comedy about the zombie apocalypse as it is the story of three people, Carlotta, her husband Paul and his old school friend Colin.
When Colin’s bragging gets on Paul’s last nerve, Carlotta gives him a “vitamin” which Colin recognizes as Troxidil, a powerful antidepressant that also doubles as male birth control by decreasing sperm count. This really doesn’t sit well with Paul, not only was he being lied to, he was being prevented from starting the family he wanted.

Back in the 1980s, former HBO Documentary Films president Sheila Nevins saw an opportunity in the nonfiction short format.
“I was watching the Academy Awards one night and there was this category called best docu short and the people who made them were getting Oscars,” Nevins says. “At the Emmys, docus were kept hidden and given out on a special day. Docs were all by themselves in a corner at the Emmys, but at the Oscars doc filmmakers went up on the stage and they won. So, when I learned that we could qualify for this thing called a short and play with the big boys, I did it.”
In March 1989 HBO garnered its third Academy Award for “You Don’t Have to Die” — a 27-minute doc about 11-year-old Jason Gaes’ successful bout with cancer. It would be the first of 15 Oscars HBO nabbed in the documentary short nonfiction category...

Rep. Jamie Raskin, who claimed the national spotlight as lead manager of then-President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the waning days of his administration, is the subject of a new MSNBC documentary titled “Love & The Constitution.”
The 86-minute docu, debuting on the cabler Feb. 6, follows the U.S. Congressman over a three-year period, capturing his fight to uphold the Constitution during the Trump administration. Several pivotal moments in life will be included, including the loss of his son, Tommy, to suicide on Dec. 31, 2020.
Director Madeleine Carter began filming “Love & The Constitution” during the Maryland representative’s second year in Congress, when special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Trump was well underway, and Raskin sat on the House Judiciary Committee.
“My first day filming Congressman Raskin was July 4, 2018,” says Carter, who expected Mueller’s report would be out soon. “I also assumed that the release of the Mueller Report...

The Oscar shortlists were announced Dec. 21, and for some, it was an early holiday gift, as well as marking the ramp-up of awards season as showbiz starts to hone campaigns and voters start to really survey the contours of the myriad kudos on offer.
Documentary Feature
Some 138 films were eligible for this category, with 15 making the cut, voted on by the Academy’s documentary branch, which will then determine the final nominees. Of the 15, some films were expected, such as front-runner Denmark’s “Flee,” which also made the international film shortlist (and has a good shot at an animated feature nomination). Music docs pepper the list, such as the Cannes-bowing “The Velvet Underground,” from Todd Haynes (Oscar-nommed for original screenplay for “Far From Heaven”). It explores the influential rock band and the New York City art scene that nurtured its songs. Also going into the final stretch as a frontrunner...

Composers Hans Zimmer and Jonny Greenwood came in strong on the Academy’s shortlist for Best Original Score, securing two slots apiece from a total of 15. Zimmer enters the next phase of Oscars competition with his scores for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Cary Fukunaga’s Bond film No Time to Die. Greenwood, meanwhile, moves forward with his soundtracks for Jane Campion’s Western The Power of the Dog and Pablo Larraín’s Princess Diana drama, Spencer.
Zimmer is an 11-time nominee who won an Oscar for his score to The Lion King in 1995, most recently vying for gold with Christopher Nolan’s 2018 World War II drama, Dunkirk. Greenwood—who also scored Paul Thomas Anderson’s recently released Licorice Pizza—earned his first nomination that same year with Anderson’s Phantom Thread.
The only past Oscar winner in contention this year, apart from Zimmer, is Alexandre Desplat—who nabbed a slot with The French Dispatch.

MSNBC is giving cable news rival CNN increased competition in the exploding documentary arena through ramped up acquisitions by a revived arm devoted to non-fiction programming.
MSNBC Films showed the seriousness of its intent in June, when it won an intense bidding war for “Paper & Glue,” by the visual artist and prior Oscar nominee Jr, ahead of its Tribeca Film Festival premiere. “Paper & Glue” has since qualified for Academy Award consideration, and is competing against documentaries including “Julia,” backed by CNN Films and Sony Pictures Classics. Despite the nondescript title, The Facility is actually a sequel to 2017’s British zombie horror The Rizen, and originally debuted in 2019 on the festival circuit as The Rizen: Possession… a title which clearly marks out where the film is headed and what we should expect. So why the title change? Maybe because the sequel has been released by a different distributor who, selfishly, didn’t want to give the first films release any publicity as they didn’t release it or – and I want to say this is the more logical reason – The Rizen wasn’t actually that well received on its release and the distributor wanted to distance this film from the original. For this Tuesday, we don’t have a ton of Blu-ray and DVD releases on tap this week, but we do have some incredible titles coming out, once again proving that it’s quality over quantity. If you haven’t had a chance to see it just yet, Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor Uncut arrives on Tuesday on multiple formats, and coincidentally enough, Total Recall is getting a 30th anniversary 4K release this week, too, and the films pair extremely well for a double feature.
Other films headed home on December 8th include She Dies Tomorrow, Smiley Face Killers, a 2-Disc Special Edition release for Versus from Ryûhei Kitamura, Black Pumpkin, The Facility, and Sympathy.
Possessor Uncut
From the visionary mind of writer/director Brandon Cronenberg, Possessor is an arresting sci-fi thriller about elite corporate assassin Tasya Vos. Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people s bodies to execute high-profile targets.

As is often the case with interesting indie horror films, The Facility proves that you don't need much to deliver something worthwhile. Here we have a straightforward story that offers A) a simple premise, B) an effective location, and C) a handful of characters worth watching for 90 minutes. The Facility never comes close to re-inventing bio-horror themes or suspense thrillers, but there's always something to be said for a movie that knows what it is, knows what it wants to do, and gets it all done with some craftsmanship and efficiency.
The plot is admirably simple stuff: a group of volunteers are gathered at a (large, creepy, and isolated) medical facility so they can test a new drug in exchange for some decent money. Director Ian Clark's medical horror The Facility is out on DVD in the UK now, not to mention that you can win a copy right here -- so to celebrate we've nabbed an exclusive look at this clinical trial gone haywire that's flashy in more way than one. Again, this is Not Safe For Work!
The Facility stars Alex Reid, Aneurin Barnard, and Steve Evets.
Synopsis:
Seven volunteers – students Carmen, Arif, and Adam; office temp Joni; journalist Katie; estate agent Jerome; and unemployed Derek – arrive at the remote Limebrook Medical Clinic to take part in a clinical trial run by ProSyntrex Pharmaceuticals. In exchange for a fee of £2,000, these human “guinea pigs” have agreed to spend two weeks in isolation testing an experimental new drug known only as Pro9. After settling into the facility, each participant is given a first injection and, following a group dinner, sent to bed.

★★☆☆☆ Screened as part of last year's Eiff and Film4 FrightFest lineups, British director Ian Clark's low-budget debut The Facility (2012) (formerly known as 'Guinea Pigs') now finds its way onto DVD, having just missed out on a theatrical release. A group of eight strangers come together at an isolated research facility to undergo a phase one medical trial for an untested drug called 'Pro-9'. Most of the participants are there for the money, with some having made such clinical trials their primary source of income. Katie (Nia Roberts) is a journalist there to cover the procedure for a piece she's currently writing - entitled 'The Last Resort'.

In medical trials around 99% of the subjects suffer no actual side effects from the drugs that are pumped into them, but what about the other 1%? That’s what The Facility takes as its core idea and although it’s not a true story, it is presented as if it’s a reconstruction of an actual event.
This is an area which horror has largely stayed away from but the pharmaceutical industry is presumably ripe for exploitation. The trouble with The Facility is writer and director Ian Clark forgets some essential elements required for this kind of story which render it fairly ineffective.
We start with several members of the public making their way to a building in the middle of nowhere (or the British countryside). We get to know the bare minimum about Joni (temp worker), Morty (unemployed professional guinea pig), Jed (alpha male estate agent), Arif (shy and troubled...

Paid clinical trials always seem like a good idea, until you're walking away with a case of Bloaty Head. To celebrate the arrival of the utterly tense, claustrophobic, and overwhelmingly effective chiller The Facility - out on DVD and Download 6th May 2013 through eOne Momentum - we have copies to give away to two lucky winners!
But shortly after dark, the group is woken by the...

Award winning short film writer director Ian Clark (“Jenny and the Worm”) makes his feature debut with the horror thriller “The Facility”, which arrives now on region 2 DVD via eOne Momentum, having played various fests under the name “Guinea Pigs”. A claustrophobic, low budget British take on the likes of “28 Days Later”, “The Crazies” and other fast/angry/infected/non-zombie shockers, the film stars a handful of semi-recognisable faces including Alex Reid (“The Descent” plus sequel), Steve Evets (“Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) and Oliver Coleman (“The Other Boleyn Girl”). The setup involves 7 unfortunate strangers who volunteer to take part in a clinical drug trial at the inevitably remote Limebrook Medical Clinic. Enticed by a fee of £2000 for 2 weeks in isolation and being injected with the experimental Pro9, they soon find things going very wrong indeed, as one of the group starts to convulse violently and vomit blood before attacking the others.

Guinea Pigs
Review by Andrew McArthur of The People’s Movies
Stars: Aneurin Barnard, Oliver Coleman, Steve Evets, Alex Reid, Chris Larkin | Written and Directed by Ian Clark
Debuting at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival Ian Clark’s much anticipated first feature, Guinea Pigs finally makes it’s Frighfest debut – having originally scheduled to show in 2011 – but despite delivering some sharp moments of tension and a realistic style, the film unfortunately lacks in lasting impact.
Eight volunteers are sent to a remote medical facility to begin clinical trials on a new drug, tentatively titled Pro-9. It soon becomes apparent that this is no ordinary drug as extreme side affects begin to appear – you know, like turning into a raging psychopath. Although the subject of clinical trials has been tackled in the horror genre before, it still remains a chilling concept. Ian Clark furthers these chills by instilling a...

Arriving at a secluded ProSyntrex facility situated deep in the English countryside, seven strangers are carefully briefed on the nature of a drug trial they have each agreed to participate in: a routine, double-blind experiment run by Dr. Mansell (Chris Larkin) that aims to study the effects of Pro-9 on human subjects.
As Adam (Aneurin Barnard), Joni (Alex Reid), Jed (Oliver Coleman), Katie (Nia Roberts), Morty (Steve Evets), Carmen (Skye Lourie) and Arif (Amit Shah) receive their first round of injections, however, they soon find themselves reacting to the drug in unexpected and drastic ways. Trapped, alone and slaves to the chemicals now coursing through their veins, the guinea pigs might not survive the night, let alone the study’s fortnight-long duration.

The 66th Edinburgh International Film Festival is officially under way – last night the opening film, Killer Joe, screened in Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, and though I wasn’t there I do wonder how it went down. It’s a provocative movie, and if it gets people arguing then at least it’s got people talking; last year’s deliberately unglamorous festival didn’t achieve even that. The screening was attended by its director, William Friedkin, who the night before introduced a screening of his classic The French Connection in the Filmhouse, and actress Gina Gershon; jury members Jim Broadbent and Elliott Gould were also in attendance.
After Friedkin’s memorable opener, I started my Festival with Pusher, that most suspicious of film product: a dreaded English-language remake. The original, a cult Danish film from the ’90s, was the first film from director Nicolas Winding Refn, of whom I have been...

Closing the event will be the world premiere of Lionsgate’s Tower Block, which stars Sheridan Smith, Jack O’Connell and Being Human’s Russell Tovey. Directed by James Nunn and Ronnie Thompson and penned by Stormhouse’s James Moran, this suspense shocker sees a group of neighbours trapped on the top floor of their run down East End home, targeted by a mystery sniper.

Back in my college days medical trials were a fact of life. Several of my friends financed their higher education by volunteering to be poked, prodded and drugged up in the name of medical science while one spent an entire year in drug trials to finance the creation of a custom built, solid body, Flying V, electric ukulele which he used to perform punk rock songs about the She-Hulk whilst draped with a pink feather boa and sometimes wearing a Mexican wrestler mask. I'm not making that up. This is him being licked by a cat.
But you know why drug trials pay so well? Because the doctors aren't always sure what's going to happen. And that very simple fact provides the basis for Ian Clark's Guinea Pigs, a found-footage style horror picture now in production. They're saying very little about it so far beyond that the story revolves...
