Typical, cliché, a little slow for today's audience but...

Look we've all seen cheesy movies. This could be worse. At least it employed some Black folks. I think movies have one of three types.

Hollywood Happy Ending, Shakespeare Tragedy, or WTF? (trying to make you think, but about what is always the issue)

I would have had the ending where their time together caused them to help each other. The ending this story has was not as plausible. And even though my way you would have seen an hour into the movie at least it would have been more believable.

Good Luck. Medea's family it ain't. Favorite line: "not gonna happen dot com." said by my favorite character too.

Nearly knocks it out of the park.

Warning: Spoilers
I was curious about this film back when the trailer had come out, and it got lost in the back of my mind. I finally got a chance to see the movie and was quite entertained. Wouldn't say it was underrated...it was just on par with what I was expecting.

Nine friends living their own separate lives are re-united when a close friend unexpectedly passes away. Upon attending his funeral, they are informed that they are all bound to receive a huge inheritance from the friend on one condition: they have to live together for one week in the deceased friend's house, and should anybody choose to leave before the week is done, then they all forfeit the inheritance.

Dysfunctional friends boasts a cast of who's who in black entertainment. Stacey Dash is a beauty to behold, and she seems to stay young with age. Wesley Jonathan and Hosea Chanchez were interesting to watch, though the latter's character didn't seem all that much different from the character he plays in "The Game", so it was a really easy role for him to play. Terrell Owens was quite impressive, not the best, but left me impressed as the over-possesive athlete. Stacey Keibler, while easy to look at on the eyes, did not seem to jump out much in her role. Jason Weaver's character is truly the comic relief of the film. Reagan Preston's character was truly an annoying one, so very well acted. Christian Keyes is humorous as the suspected gay model. While I was bummed that their roles were not bigger, it was pleasant to see Meagan Good, Tatyana Ali and Essence Atkins in the movie.

There were two roles here really that did not really warrant being there, but I guess they served their purpose in a useless way. I felt the character's of Storm and Stylz were not really needed in this flick. I would say they were more there to escalate the situation that these friends had with each other.

I have to say Mr. Grant definitely had a challenge ahead of himself, trying to combine nine lives within a 120 minute picture. He pulled it off only to a certain point. Certain characters backstories would have been helpful while the backstories that were provided weren't fleshed out enough. And of course the plot was predictable. But nonetheless, the film was quite enjoyable to watch.

Also, while it was a mouth watering sight to see, am I the only one to think Meagan Good's attire at the end left too much to the imagination? For an attorney nonetheless?

You look like Meagan Good

Warning: Spoilers
When rich guy Dennis dies, he leaves "something" in his will for his college friends if they all spend 5 days together in his house. We have seen these type of impracticable "will" movies before. The characters include a washed up rapper who still thinks he has a career, a film star who does direct to DVD movies, a porno director, a business man cheating on his wife, A male model, a couple of gold diggers, a women engaged to an athlete and a sports writer who still loves said woman. Ebony (Reagan Gomez-Preston) is the chief antagonist in this group of friends which you wonder how they ever put up with each other in the first place. Dennis was apparently the glue that held the group together. Meagan Good, which is billed as a star in the film has a minor role and is not part of the group.

The first 2 days they spend together, the acting and dialouge are horrible. If you can make it into day 3 the movie starts to get interesting, as if a new writer and cast were hired. Even TO did well. The problem is I couldn't connect with any of the characters, who were introduced late, so when things are supposed to get interesting, I was bored. Days 3 and 4 showed promise and gave us material for the climatic dinner at day 5 which returned to the terrible dialouge of earlier.

There was a feel good ending.

F-bomb, no sex, no nudity, sex talk.

Everybody Cheats on Everybody

Warning: Spoilers
The acting in this movie was terrible with the exception of Stacy Dash and Reagan Gomez-Preston. Christian Keyes was pretty good too as Stylz. The rest were just too cheesy. It has its funny parts but most of it made me cringe. I wasn't sure if this was supposed to be a feel good movie in the way that everyone so blatantly cheats on their significant others without batting an eye. I wished they would have gone into more of the background of some of the characters, especially the main friend in who's house they stay. It seemed like he made his will yesterday. It could have been much better but was sub-par, IMO. I don't think I'd recommend it.

Dysfunctional film as well...
dawb-408971 March 2024
This ensemble film seems to take influence from the likes of 'Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?' in approach and tone. That description alone should serve notice that the film isn't going to offer much in freshness or originality. A personal issue I have with films such as this is the fact that the characters as written aren't likeable enough to root for them and filmmakers seem to assume because the actors in the roles are attractive we should always want to see them win at the conclusion of the plot. This film is no exception to that rule. On top of that, certain improbable coincidences occur during the plot to keep the narrative going which always irks me. Good looking cast with performances that waver in quality, teetering from slightly below average to solid, at times from the same actor(s). I was entertained at the climactic dinner scene in the third act which, as stated before, seemed to take a note from the Tyler Perry school of melodrama and humor. Rather basic camerawork, nothing special but looks decent for a lower budget film. The scene transition editing wasn't smooth. Did not like the music/score in the film. Felt rather generic and histrionic. Film doesn't make much of an impression but is alright for a little light entertainment if some of these performers are personal favorites to anyone.

Great Concept

This movie is one of the best of 2012! In Dysfunctional Friends you see some very talented fresh faces Like Christian Keyes and Angela Simmons and many of the pros coming together on one screen like Stacy Dash and Datari Turner. The bond between friends is the overall theme in this drama/comedy and its the relationships; both past and present that make us who we are. I laughed hard and even got teary-eyed in the nearly 2 hour film. This movie is a classic and I wish that it could have had a better chance of being on the silver screen with a bigger budget. Good movie Enjoy

Positive Blk Film

I watched this film with my mother and I have to say we enjoyed it. Finally, a movie about young black people with good careers and good actors. We liked the plot of the movie. I feel like it had a nice flow to it and the characters were developed well enough. The movie was very entertaining. The only thing that I didn't like about the movie was the choice of words the characters used. Sometimes when arguments ignited in the movie the curse words flowed excessively. During those scenes I feel like the f bomb could have been left out. If you don't care to hear the words mf'ers and the f bomb just mute the angry scenes and enjoy the rest of the movie;)

Very entertaining

Great movie! Awesome cast and directing! It is wonderful to see an all black movie without drugs and violence. Keep making more of these types of films. Congrats to Terrell Owens on his movie debut.

Meeting up after the death of a close friend, a motley crew of college friends learns each of them is lined up to inherit a huge sum of money according to the terms of the will. The catch? They must remain in each other's company inside a mansion for the entire weekend. Is the dear departed trying to teach his beneficiaries about friendship...or was his gesture just a strange way of getting everyone's secrets out?

Actors: Stacey Dash, Terrell Owens, Reagan Gomez-Preston, Meagan Good, Essence Atkins, Jason Weaver, Tatyana Ali, Hosea Chanchez, Wesley Jonathan, Persia White

Dysfunctional Friends: A far cry from dysfunctional
HisDiamondPrincess30 April 2012
Wonderful acting with a great story line. The directing was ON Point, and the film was written very well.I laughed as well as cried cried. Keith Robinson's vocals are on point. The music video is lovely and the song is catchy and addictive. The all-star cast never misses a beat. The acting was so good, I watched it three times just to make sure I hadn't missed anything or any lines. Makes me wonder why some of these wonderful actors aren't blowing up like they deserve.I hope there is going to be a sequel. This is one I must have for my library, especially if Mr. Grant makes Dysfunctional Friends part 2. Looking forward to seeing more Corey Grant productions. However, Mr. Grant is going to have stay on top of his game, because this film was very entertaining. I am going to recommend it to my friends and family.
