Meanwhile, Ashley skips school to help comfort Adrian through bouts of morning sickness, and Ricky, who overhears that Adrian might be pregnant, goes to confront her about it. And Jack is desperately trying to find someone to stay with so that his parents can move away.—ABC Family Publicity
- Ben is on the phone, leaving a message for Ricky thanking him for encouraging him to visit Amy the night before and expressing his happiness that they are back together. Before he can finish the message, he is interrupted by Henry and Alice. Alice is skeptical that Adrian is telling the truth about the "false positive" on the pregnancy test, and gives Ben some research on the rarity of false positives. Ben assures them that Adrian is not pregnant, and Alice tells Ben that she thinks that Adrian may be lying. He insists that Adrian is telling him the truth, and Alice suggests that he have Adrian take another pregnancy test to make sure. He refuses, saying that he has closed this chapter of his life and is eager to open a new chapter with Amy.
At Adrian's home, her father offers her leftover pizza for breakfast since her mother is out of town. He leaves, and Adrian begins to dig in -- however, morning sickness kicks in and she throws up. In his apartment, Ricky is listening to Ben's message, and is shocked to overhear Ben, Alice and Henry discussing the results of Adrian's pregnancy test.
Ashley and Amy are arguing -- Amy is dismayed that Ashley told their parents that she has birth control pills. Ashley tells Amy that she should be honest and tell them that she is having sex with Ben; Amy denies that they are, but wants the pills in case she changes her mind. When she asks Ashley why she has birth control pills, Ashley snaps, "Same reason," and they resume their angry silence. George is pleased that the girls seem to be making up, but Ashley tells him that they aren't, and asks if they can move back out. When George protests, Ashley declares that she is going to ask Adrian for a ride to school, since Amy isn't ready yet. George knocks on Amy's door, and tells her that her top is too low and her skirt is too short. After a short argument, George insists that Amy come home right after picking up John so that she can be at a family dinner. Amy protests, preferring to go out to reunion dinner with Ben, but George is firm. He tells Amy that Ben can come to the house for dinner.
Ashley enters Adrian's kitchen to ask for a ride, but realizes that Adrian has thrown up. Immediately comprehending the situation, she scoops up the offending pizza, throws it away, and suggests that she could stay with Adrian if she needs a "sick day," and needs to talk to someone who has been through it before "with someone else who wasn't sick."
Grace is talking to Jeff, her new stepfather, who is assuring her that pregnancy tests are very accurate, and that the 1% that are wrong are usually wrong because they failed to detect pregnancy hormones. Grace is belligerent and insists that the test must have been a mistake, but her stepfather gently suggests that perhaps Adrian has had an abortion. Grace becomes upset, declaring that because she told Adrian not to do such a thing, she wouldn't, and that she resents Jeff for even thinking it. She flounces out of the kitchen, passing Tom, who tells Jeff that he has taken the trash to the curb, and thinks that he and Jeff should take turns. Jeff agrees, but suggests that Tom might look for a job, too. Tom dismisses the idea, and Kathleen tells him about an unpleasant incident at his previous job.
At school, Ben asks Henry and Alice where he should take Amy out to dinner, but Alice tells him that before he takes Amy out, he should tell Grace that he's getting back together with Amy. Ben agrees reluctantly, not looking forward to the inevitable scene. When Alice continues to suggest that Adrian may be pregnant, Ben gets angry and leaves. As he leaves, he runs into Grace, who lets him know that she knows he went to Amy's the evening before. He tells her that he and Amy are getting back together, and Grace tells him that they will remain friends, and is glad that he is happy -- she feels that Adrian should have been sure of the pregnancy before scaring Ben, but Ben disagrees, telling Grace that if Adrian was scared, then he should have been scared right along with her. Grace declares that Ben is "so nice" and that Amy is lucky, and then notes that she hasn't seen Adrian that morning -- leaving Ben wondering why Adrian isn't there.
Jack approaches Ricky and asks if he can stay with him for a year when his parents leave. Ricky tells him that he doesn't want to jeopardize his shared custody and refuses, but Jack asks if he can tell his parents that Ricky agreed so that they can accept the job. Ricky agrees. Ricky bumps into Griffin and Grant, who is considering transferring to their school, and aggressively lets Grant know that he isn't welcome before he storms off. Griffin reiterates that Ashley isn't going to be pleased that Grant is switching schools to be near her, but Grant is determined.
Ricky calls Ashley and asks why she isn't at at school, and she tells him that she decided to take the day off. He tells her that her boyfriend is there, and she is shocked that Grant is at her school. Adrian walks in, calling Ashley's name, and Ashley quickly hangs up on Ricky -- but not before he hears Adrian in the background. Ashley tells Adrian that Ricky was on the phone, and asks if she still loves Ricky, but Adrian denies it.
Amy reports to the counselor's office in response to a summons -- the counselor excitedly tells her that she has been awarded an all-expense paid place in a 4-week summer music program in New York City, which could be an important stepping stone in her dream to attend Julliard. After an initial burst of excitement, Amy accuses the counselor of playing a cruel joke on her -- she can't go, because she has a baby. The counselor tells her that the baby has a father and an extended family, all of whom would be happy to care for him while she is gone for four weeks. Amy protests that all she wants to do is to stay in town during the summer and make things right with Ben, but it dawns on her -- New York!
Amy tells Madison and Lauren about the music school opportunity, and that she is turning it down because she couldn't take John. Ricky walks up and overhears her, and she tells him about it. He tells her that he is the one that encouraged Ben to come by the evening before, and he hopes that it works out. When he asks when he should pick up John that evening, Amy tells him that she is being forced to eat dinner at home that night and pouts that she isn't going anywhere -- not out to dinner, not to New York. Ben finds them, and as he joins them, Ricky leaves, snarling, "see you at work," to Ben's surprise. Amy tells Ben about the music school, and Ben is very pleased for her, and he commiserates when she says that she can't go. He is invited to dinner at 6 pm.
Grace angrily arrives home from school, declaring to her mother that Ben has broken up with her. Kathleen is surprised -- she thought they were just friends -- but Grace is angry that they won't even have a chance to be more than friends. Her mother points out that Ben did have sex with her best friend, who might be pregnant, and Grace angrily tells her mother that just because Jeff is a gynecologist, "he doesn't know everything about pregnancy", and that Adrian is not pregnant. At that moment, Jack taps on the door. Grace opens the door and declares that just because Ben is going back to Amy, that doesn't mean she is going out with Jack again. Jack seems a little taken aback by the idea, but asks to speak to Kathleen. He explains his parents' move, and Grace quickly declares, "Well, you can't stay HERE!" Kathleen remonstrates with Grace, but agrees that it's not a good idea, since she's a newlywed, they are trying to bond as a family -- and, oh, by the way, he had sex with Grace and Tom hates him. Jack good-naturedly agrees that it's probably not a good idea, and Kathleen invites him to dinner.
Ashley and Adrian are eating ice cream in the middle of the afternoon, contemplating getting caught for skipping school. Adrian realizes that it doesn't matter what others think of her, she needs to do what is best for her, including an abortion. Ashley suggests that maybe Ben should have some input into the decision, but Adrian refuses to tell him, acknowledging that he belongs with Amy and could not handle the reality of her pregnancy. Ashley points out that Ben accompanied Amy to the abortion clinic when she was thinking of having an abortion, but Adrian points out that, in that case, it wasn't Ben's baby. Adrian tells Ashley that she is going to ask her mother to go with her, even though she dreads telling her, and hugs Ashley. Ricky chooses that moment to knock on the door. Ashley offers to get rid of him, but Adrian tells her to wait. She opens the door and Ricky asks, in a quavering voice, "Are you pregnant?" She gives him a small nod and lifts her chin as he shakes his head in disbelief and quickly walks away. She closes the door and begins to sob.
At the shop, Ricky confronts Ben, asking him if Ben wants to tell him anything and asks what's going on between Ben and Adrian. Ben tells him that Adrian thought she was pregnant, but she wasn't, and they didn't tell him because they didn't think it was any of his business. Ricky tells Ben that Adrian is pregnant. Ben denies it, but Ricky assures him that she is, and if she said she wasn't, then she was lying. Ben frantically denies it, but Ricky points out that he knows Adrian. Ben still emphatically denies it, but Ricky tells him that he is Ben's friend, and when he realizes the truth, he'll be there for him.
George arrives home to an empty kitchen -- Anne has not fixed dinner, and tells George that he misunderstood hr plan, that she didn't mean to start family dinners *that* night. George is dismayed, and tells her that Amy has invited Ben over for dinner, and Anne suggests that since George is the one that created the situation, George should probably be the one to call for Chinese take-out. Ashley walks into the middle of the argument, and Anne asks Ashley meaningfully how school was, then letting her know that she knows she didn't go to school and spent the day at Adrian's. George is aghast, but Anne is more matter-of-fact and declares that Ashley is old enough to be responsible for her own decisions, and if she doesn't go to school and gets poor grades, then she'll have to suffer the consequences of not going to college. Ashley is delighted and tells Anne that "you are my new favorite!", but George is dismayed and confronts Ashley, telling her that education is not an option.
At Grace's home, Jack is helping set the table, and is asked to go tell Grace that supper is ready. Grace is sitting on her bed, and asks Jack thoughtfully if she thinks Adrian is lying, and why would she lie to her. Jack points out that Adrian is probably planning to get an abortion, and knows that Grace wouldn't support her decision. He goes on to point out that it's Adrian's decision and not for them to judge.
Anne and George are still fighting over Anne's position on Ashley going to school. Amy walks in and is dismayed at the dinner that has been planned. As Anne, George, Ashley and Amy continue to snipe at each other, Ben knocks on the door, and Ashley mutters, "And so it begins . . ." Dinner is an uncomfortably silent affair, and Ben excuses himself early. Amy apologizes for her family's behavior, but Ben is understanding, telling her that all families argue and that they will laugh over it years from now. Amy is taken aback by Ben's fervent declaration that all families have problems that they work out and that he will always love her, and wonders what is wrong. He leaves. and Amy drags back into the dining room to announce that she has been accepted at the music school in New York. Her family looks at her, and Ashley comments wryly, "You should go."
At home, Ben unexpectedly runs into his father, who is back early from his honeymoon and wants to take Ben out to dinner. Ben tells him that he has just finished dinner at Amy's, and his father observes that he is back very early. His father sees that something is bothering Ben, and encourages him to tell him what is wrong. After a few hesitations, Ben reluctantly tells him that Adrian is pregnant and that it is his baby. His father sinks to the bed in disbelief.
