BET Awards 2010 (2010 TV Special) User Reviews

Questionable concept, tolerable execution

Here we got the "BET Awards 2010" and let me start this review by saying that there definitely is a certain irony to the concept of an awards show that requires people to have a certain skin color to win an award or be allowed to perform here. And I believe the exceptions of Eminem, Lady Gaga and Tommy Lee are really just exceptions that prove the rule. Especially if that awards show includes exactly those people (even in person with Jada Pinkett Smith) who complain about the lack of diversity in Hollwood and at the Oscars. Admittedly the latter happened way past 2010, but still. And on a completely different note, why are there hip hop awards in this show if there is another award show by BET that focuses entirely on hip hop. So these are the general questions coming to my mind with the overall BET Awards concept. As for this specific edition, the exclusion of hip hop awards could have helped in keeping the show considerably shorter as at almost three hours, it really was bloated and overlong. I did like that they really had many big names on board here and even if my knowledge on most categories is certainly not profound, I recognized many performers, announcers, nominees and winners. I also liked the fact that they showed really everybody at the very beginning, so fans knew who would be part of the show and if any personal favorites would show up later. The Oscars/Globes can do this too and it would be nice. The child photos are another nice inclusion and finally a thumbs-up for the Michael Jackson tribute. These are the areas where director Glenn Weiss succeeded thanks to his long history with award shows. I guess that is all the positive, but the rest was mediocre at best like Queen Latifah's hosting or the music performances in terms of both quantity and quality, especially given the names who may have had their best, most creative days behind them many of them it seems. The acceptance speeches were as bland and forgettable as it gets. So yeah, as a whole it is really only worth seeing and listening to if you really like really many of the featured artists. Otherwise skip it and you won't be missing much at all. I give the event as a whole a thumbs-down. Not recommended.
