Well done documentary except one small error
sheilar-1528222 August 2022
Okay, this is a great documentary and is unlike these recent multi episode documentaries that are repetitive and so drawn out it's almost an insult to your intelligence. I love documentaries and some of the caliber of some of them lately are such a waste of time. This one really delivers. I remember this case. I'm from Boston but I never got this level of detail back when I followed the case in the media.

My biggest gripe is the very 1st episode and the most important detail is this took place in NEWTON, MA. They have it in the main opening credit as Newtown. For me, this led me to wonder what else they got wrong if they could spell the name of where this all went down inaccurately displayed in the opening credits? I can't help it but this lack of attention to detail bugs me. In the end, I still would rate this as a very compelling watch despite the major error but I'm that person that has to mention that.

The killer nanny: She definitely did it

Warning: Spoilers
It's such a bizarre statement by one review on here that 'the glaze-eyed stare' of the mother convinces them that she is the true murderer. Huh? I didn't see that, I saw grief. Even if she had a certain look, ask yourself, how would you 'look' as you listened to a girl lie about killing your child? Have you had to go through it? I don't believe for one second that either of these professional, ADULT parents did anything to harm their child. They were both doctors, probably worked long hours so any second spent with their children was probably a nothing but a blessing. Also, did you not see the 'look' on the nannies face the whole time? That smirk? Her laughing on stand? Ew.

I was a live-in nanny to 2 small girls when I was in my early 20s and it was HARD. I can remember how frustrating it was to me. I never did anything abusive or harmful to them, but I sure thought about smacking them from time to time. And I wasn't coming home at 2 am after partying all night and waking up 4 hrs later hung over like this girl. I wasn't on the verge of being fired and homeless. I didn't have a bad relationship with the parents. So I can imagine the thoughts I had sometimes were probably magnified in this nannys mind. The nanny did it. She pretty much admitted she did it! And even if the skull fracture was old, the nanny IMO caused the old skull fracture.

The verdict by the judge overturning her conviction was infuriating. While I don't think nanny intended to kill the baby, she did and should have been punished in some way. It was so disrespectful to the parents, the jurors, the baby.

The doc was good and straightforward as others have mentioned. It wasn't one-sided or bias either way, it tells both sides and let's you draw your own conclusion, which makes for a successful documentary. But this nanny got away with killing a 9 month old baby and this case had Casey Anthony vibes all over it.

i you dont feel...

Dented after watching this then youre not human. Im a grumpy old man, with a grumpy old opinion, that i do not want to share, other than that this is a piece of brilliant documentary making, and whatever the nays and jays that roared all over the world, even here in tiny little norway back then at the weestart of the digital age, a roar of justice that really never will be settled... so let them all rest in peace .

A great documentary that reflects both sides and the third parts and the intense mediacoverageas well, so go ahead and watch and sense how it all felt back then.a must see whether you like it or not.

Finally, a documentary that isn't bloated with filler episodes
EPMD571 July 2022
I am sick of the 6-10 episode documentaries that never quite get to the point. This documentary remained focused on the story, featured almost all of the key people involved, and kept a balanced viewpoint. If I had to nitpick, I would complain about the repeated use of certain video clips, but it never felt like they couldn't get the necessary footage for the story.

It's a sad story, but it's worth watching.

The miniseries is absolutely fascinating, I really enjoyed watching it!

I had no prior knowledge of the case, so some of the twists and turns really surprised me.

"Stepford" Mother
ShooShooFontana28 August 2022
The glazed-eyed stare of the baby's mother, coupled with the fact that the shaking could have happened a day or two earlier than the 911 call convinces me the mother is the true murderer.

There is an excellent episode of Law & Order: SVU that is likely based on this incident. The nanny is initially accused because the child was in her care at the time of the child being nonresponsive but it is later determined that the shaking was actually done by the mother 2 days prior.

I am firmly convinced that the mother "did it".

That glassy stare in every courtroom photo just screams guilt. Like she's thinking "Oh my God, did I shake him too hard the night before? Was it my fault?" Meanwhile, an innocent girl, a child herself, was put through the wringer.

I lived in Boston when this happened. I was a paralegal at the time and watched this case closely, as we all did. Nothing will convince me that the POS mother ISN'T the one responsible for the shaking that lead to Matthew's death. Her since then posturing does nothing to assuage her absolute guilt.
