Jim Cliffe, director and co-writer of Donovan's Echo, was given quite a thrilling assignment for his first feature film. He was tasked with bringing his supernatural tale to life and given Danny Glover and Bruce Greenwood to work with. Not bad.
With Donovan's Echo making a successful festival run and now available on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD, Cliffe sat down with Dread Central to discuss his experiences with the film.
Dread Central: Why the supernatural genre for your first feature?
Jim Cliffe: It’s a genre that I love. Growing up, I was into comic books, superheroes, Star Wars, Steven Spielberg films, and I’ve just always been fascinated by the unknown and extraordinary. While I like a wide range of cinema, I’ve always enjoyed movies that offer something out of the unordinary, particularly if it’s set within a reality that feels very authentic with grounded characters and everyday problems.

Today's batch of MPAA ratings is even lighter than usual as only one major release was rated today, though I was surprised to see Brad Anderson's The Call starring Halle Berry get an R-rating. This is one I fully expected to get a PG-13, but perhaps the March 15 release will have a little something extra in store than your average PG-13 thriller. Below is the complete batch of latest MPAA ratings from Bulletin #2261. The Adventures Of Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Treasure Rated PG For some action and peril. The Call Rated R For violence, disturbing content and some language. Release Date: March 15, 2013 Donovan's Echo Rated PG-13 For some violent content. Home Sweet Home Rated R For bloody violence, terror and some language. Language of a Broken Heart Rated R For some sexual references. Love Sick Love Rated R For language, some sexual content and brief violence. Ring the...

Director: Jim Cliffe.
Writers: Jim Cliffe, and Melodie Krieger.
Cast: Danny Glover, Bruce Greenwood and Natasha Calis.
Donovan's Echo was the final film to show at the Victoria Film Festival and this is a "psychological thriller" starring Danny Glover as director Jim Cliffe mentioned. This was a late showing on a Sunday night and this critic was looking for a few more thrills in Cliffe's movie debut. The director intentionally made the film in such a way to build the tension until the final climax.
There is no doubt that this is an above average film; however, there could have been more conflict in the early parts of the film. That aside, the story begins with Glover as Donovan, a retired physicist. Donovan had worked on the Manhattan Project, the experiment to develop the atomic bomb. Along the way, Donovan had also delved into cold fusion, but now he is...

Came across this trailer and thought it was interesting in The Mothman Prophecies -but-without-a-Mothman sort of way. It's for a film called Donovan's Echo . Not a horror film, per se, but definitely a twisty-turny thriller with Danny Glover and, one of my personal favorites, Bruce Greenwood. This is writer-director Jim Cliffe's feature debut and it recently played at the American Film Market. We'll keep you posted if it gets distribution. With a well constructed script and strong performances from actors Danny Glover and Bruce Greenwood, Canadian made Donovan's Echo emerges as a solid supernatural mystery drama and a nice little surprise from this year's Edmonton International Film festival. And with the conviction of a veteran who knows exactly where his story is headed, director/co-writer Jim Cliffe allows his feature film debut to unfold slowly, which lets the movie breath and its actors to really find a life inside the frame. A rare strength in a new director and one that I think really helped the film be engaging.

I think Danny Glover is ready to make his comeback.
I know what you're thinking: he hasn't exactly disappeared and you're absolutely right he's still around and making movies but nothing memorable. Then I see a trailer for Jim Cliffe's Donovan's Echo and I tell you, it looks like Glover is back and in memorable fashion.
Glover stars as Donovan, a man who lost his family in a tragic accident thirty years ago. A series of events, and from the looks of the trailer some dreams as well, leads him to believe that history is repeating itself so he goes out of his way to try and save his neighbour's from a similar fate. Starring opposite Glover are the great Bruce Greenwood and BSG's Sonja Bennett.
