Live performances for the film were all shot at real performances before paying audiences. Venues include McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA, Ashland Coffee & Tea in Ashland, VA, the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD, and Hugh's Room in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Several of the music venues featured in the film have closed, including the Gravity Lounge in Charlottesville, VA, and the Joyful Noise Coffeehouse in Lexington, MA.
Peter Case has been nominated three times for Grammy Awards, most recently for his 2007 album "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John." Another artist in the film, Dave Alvin, won the Best Contemporary Folk Grammy for his 2000 album, "Public Domain."
