This movie was initially banned in Germany over fears about the film's anti-Semitic content, although it was eventually decided that the film could be made available to those over the age of eighteen.
The civilian ship that's raided by the army carried out on the orders of General Ben Eliezer is based on the real life Israeli raid of the Marvi Marmara Gaza Freedom Flotilla in 2010. The Marvi Marmara was filled with both international, Palestinian and Turkish aid volunteers and peace activists bringing much needed medical supplies and construction materials to Gaza in hopes of also breaking the Israeli blockade of Gaza. The Marmara was raided by Israeli Army as it reached Gaza's shores which led to the death of 9 aid volunteers mostly Turkish and the arrests of the crew and the remaining volunteers.
Mosche Ben Eliezer, the antagonist of the film, is based on Israeli Army general Moshe Dayan who became famous for leading the an Israeli invasion of Syria and Lebanon during the 1967 Six Day War. Dayan also fought against Palestinians during 1948 war and the 1930s in British Mandatory Palestine. Like Dayan, Ben Eliezer lost his eye in battle and wears the famous eye patch.
